Game The Most Disliked Sixth Season Episode, 2025 Edition

Lessons is a very successful example of a Romance of the Week. Picard and Darren had intellect, and music in common, and the had a wonderful chemistry.

It starts out with some nice effects, then reminds us why Seven keeps whining how the crew is inefficient:

VOY: "Good Shepherd"

Actually, it's a new take on the TNG episode "Lower Decks" and manages to hold its own. Not a bad story at all, even if the material it's scrounging for inspiration is starting to really show.

Plus, there's also a cool song from over 55,000 years ago with the same name:

(Caution: The tempo and speed might be too slow for some, in which case try rolling with it as it's oddly soothing. Especially on the same album with other songs that have higher tempo, where one is historic in its use of a swear word... odd way to find a balance, but I can dig it. )

Saving "Birthright, Part II".

I will always defend this because I see nothing wrong with Worf teaching young Klingons their own heritage. And having them, who all have good views of Romulans, out in the rest of society may help others get past their hatred of Romulans because they can spread a message of understanding them.

A very STAR TREK ending, being one of the core philosophies of the franchise... bringing understanding between people.

Saving DS9's Honor Among Thieves. I don't think anyone would call it a stand out episode, but it doesn't deserve to be one of the last DS9 episodes left standing.

Ugh. The others are generally horrid, so I may as well go with the bland:

TNG: "Aquiel"

Six seasons in and they're STILL trying to get Geordi interested in someone who won't be interested in return, and this is the most hamfisted attempt yet... But Geordi is supposed to be naive with humans in a way to be an opposite of his nuance for fixing all the technology on the ship and they have to show "the human side" of things. Just wish they could have done it a bit better.

Plus, there's a neat effect that comes in handy too...

Saving "The Quality of Life".

As a Data fan, an episode of his will NEVER become a winner of these games if I can help it.

Plus, it's among the best of what's left.

Barge of the Dead is next.

I always liked Torres, so it was fascinating exploring the Klingon culture that she had shunned all of her life.

The barge set looks impressive as well.

I'll eliminate VOY: "Life Line." Several interesting cameos and characters. Not a bad story.

Saving "DRAGON'S TEETH".

Damn shame we didn't get a follow up to the Vaadwaur. They would have been a good recurring villain.

I was dreading Voyager's "Live Fast And Prosper" when I first heard about it, as it sounded like it was going to be False Profits, Part II. But then it won me over by actually showing a fair bit of intelligence and using its characters properly, which I always appreciate. In fact it's a top 5 season 6 story for me.

TNG: "Suspicions"
TNG: "Rightful Heir"
DS9: "Profit And Lace"
VOY: "Fair Haven"
VOY: "Virtuoso"
VOY: "Collective"
VOY: "Spirit Folk"
VOY: "Ashes To Ashes"
VOY: "Child's Play"
VOY: "Unimatrix Zero, Part I"

It's corny, it's "been there, done that" and three times over no less, and it's so cool that it uses a blue laser instead of red for the cat toy, but

VOY: "Unimatrix Zero, Part I"

Has an oddball charm if you can roll with it.

When good writing fails, always throw in some contrived plotting with gratuitous violence (shown in a later scene, which I was unable to find), but it does show another interesting facet to the Borg's devolution as a Trek species.

Chuckles might say "So far, so good" as we all know being assimilated is a nothingburger, but kudos to Kate Mulgrew for actually acting up the pain of the process. (Granted, Queenie is feeling their minds be attached and yet there's some treknobabble link preventing her from knowing everything, but that little quandary really doesn't get resolved in part two next season...)

I'll give some love to "Suspicions", which yeah it's a pretty bog standard murder mystery, but hey, Bev gets to do stuff that isn't falling in love with a guest star, you get to see Ferengi and Klingon scientists, and look at that outfit!

Saving "Profit and Lace" and taking DS9 off the board. It's the worst of the Ferengi episodes, but I like the Ferengi episodes, even P&L.

TNG: "Rightful Heir"
VOY: "Fair Haven"
VOY: "Virtuoso"
VOY: "Collective"
VOY: "Spirit Folk"
VOY: "Ashes To Ashes"
VOY: "Child's Play"

I am saving Voyager's "Spirit Folk"!

The first time I saw the story I thought it was absurd that the crew were risking their lives to save holodeck holograms, especially holograms from an episode as dull as Fair Haven. But on a rewatch I realised that the crew are well aware they're just protecting a video game save and Janeway was ready to wipe it the second anyone was at risk. They're just so isolated and lonely that they need that fantasy world and that sense of community for the sake of their mental health. So the episode actually takes advantage of Voyager's premise to tell a story the other shows couldn't tell... well, except for maybe Deep Space Nine if Vic's bar was in danger.

TNG: "Rightful Heir"
VOY: "Fair Haven"
VOY: "Virtuoso"
VOY: "Collective"
VOY: "Ashes To Ashes"
VOY: "Child's Play"

Ok, so I'm going to eliminate "Child's Play." This was a very disturbing episode, though not as disturbing as "Wrongs Darker Than Death or Night," in my opinion. The Seven & Icheb moments were nice at least.

TNG: "Rightful Heir"
VOY: "Fair Haven"
VOY: "Virtuoso"
VOY: "Collective"
VOY: "Ashes To Ashes"

These are the dregs. (Though four of the episodes that have already been saved, I would have picked as worst of this game. And frankly among the whole the franchise... "THE RECKONING", "PROFIT AND LACE", "SPIRIT FOLK", and "UNIMATRIX ZERO".)

Saving "Rightful Heir".

Easily the best of what remains.

VOY: "Fair Haven"
VOY: "Virtuoso"
VOY: "Collective"
VOY: "Ashes To Ashes"
