(Farscape One, his face smiling and heart joyful.)

Taking out "PHAGE" next.

Not only a good Doctor episode, but it introduced the BEST villains of VOYAGER, and among the very best of the franchise: the Vidiians.

Man, it is so hard to choose between "Goliath" and "Goliath Returns." I mean, Hasselhoff fighting himself? Classic!

Oh, wait, that's not Star Trek. That's from one of my other favorite childhood shows, Knight Rider. But those episodes were directed by Kolbe. He did quite a bit of Knight Rider.

Anyway, I'll go for "Armageddon Game," one of my early season favorites from DS9.

VOY Season 7: "Repression"

Saving DS9: "The Siege" for many, many reasons, but the way Winn turns on Jaro when they're presented with evidence that Cardassians are supplying weapons to the Circle is unnervingly fast/calculating/treacherous.

TNG Season 2: "Up The Long Ladder"
TNG Season 3: "Allegiance"

VOY Season 6: "Dragon's Teeth"
VOY Season 6: "Good Shepherd"

Saving "FACES".

The Vidiians are just awesome. And it was a good B'Elanna episode. Plus, I think the seeds of friendship (and later marriage) are planted here with Tom.

VOY Season 6: "Good Shepherd"
VOY Season 7: "Drive"
VOY Season 7: "Repression"

Saving "Up the Long Ladder".

Arguably, it's not a very good episode and the depiction of the farmer settlers is very cliché, but somehow, I've always liked that episode. As silly as the farmers might be, I find that story fun to watch, including the music in this episode. I also imagine they had a lot of fun filming it.

It did use clichés for the colony splinters, but how far could they show one that eschewed technology ("INS" did that aspect better, but don't tell anyone that) and the other that was hot to trot for it.

The allegories and allusions are told maturely well and also are tangential to the other running theme of the season, that of "is Data sentient" where, in "The Measure of a Man" they also talk about how one is unique and special but if there's an army of cloned Datas, is something lost.

I love the directorial, storyboarding and editing techniques to show multiple groups of triplets or more as it was all seamless.

But, with all the 80s hair on display, and nobody fainted due to the smell of all that hairspray and related hair sculpting products?

I've saved the Final Chapter, now i'll go with Favor the Bold, a part on the also excellent Occupation Arc.

Oh, for that moment the F-word was said:

TNG Season 4: "Galaxy's Child"

"Fouled" being the F-word du jour. The implication is that Leah ain't happy. And in the 24th century where everyone is shiny happy people unless they say "merde" and amazingly he didn't say that about the Borg but I digress, this is comparatively momentous.

I rather like the inference as how the chief designer-with-the-cool-earrings is at Utopia Planetia and is obviously reading up the chief engineers' logs of all the ships she'd directly designed for. All that is a nice subtle touch to this episode as she too looks for "in the field" usage for inspiration to innovate upon. Nothing exists in a vacuum, not even outer space 🤪. If "Darmok" is an all-time great despite having used "Arena" as a partial springboard and it's not like "Arena" didn't have influences for inspiration either.

Wait, we're only supposed to see the split screen action here:

(Um, the computer's 9.37% margin created the cringe dialogue about "when you're touching it", he did not ask for that at all in the "Booby Trap" story. Guess what's coming up soon in my rewatch list, it's "Galaxy's Child" for sure...)

And, no, Geordi did not make one program for every day of the week or every mood. He even told Barclay that there's a difference between holodeck simulations and reality in another episode (the one where Barclay makes stunt doubles of the bridge crew as actual playthings. I don't even want to think what Riker creates while in there, yuck!)

Okay, the usual trope in Star Trek on how life forms can travel slower than the speed of light but otherwise live in space - at least near asteroid fields or something that would have life-sustaining energy for it since life isn't always carbon-based globs the way all of us fritters on Earth are...

(The scene just about starts with a great camera angle of the ship coming in view from behind, with Junior relishing every "sip" of energy. Be glad it latched onto the neck near the cargo bays and not directly atop the hull where the warp core would be housed a few decks below.)

There are a few cringey scenes in this episode, true. Geordi's "Is that so?" while forgetting he was talking to a computer-generated simulation that had a 9.37% margin of error and based on a limited set of source material that could not include restricted personal records, takes the cake.

(Turn up the bass, y'all! Also, his hair - is it possible to combine a flat top with mullet as that mig--- wait just a mo', what song reference did you really think I was going to put up?! :guffaw: )

The Sound of Her Voice is an impressive episode when you think about it. How do you make one random character at a time basically sat in the room talking on the phone look and feel compelling? Not a small ask for a director.

TNG Season 3: "Allegiance"
TNG Season 5: "The Masterpiece Society"

VOY Season 7: "Repression"

I am surprised "The Sound of Her Voice" lasted so long. It has some similarities to "Pen Pal" but is so much better.

I am going to save "The Good Shepherd" in that it tried to do something different, not least in having a look at those people who aren't the necessarily the best, even if it didn't go anywhere very much.

TNG Season 3: "Allegiance"

Oh, wait, that's not Star Trek. That's from one of my other favorite childhood shows, Knight Rider. But those episodes were directed by Kolbe. He did quite a bit of Knight Rider.

Kolbe did a lot of magic in Knight Rider. Was happy to see the blu-ray set get released. Didn't realize how many pop songs were covers, either. But the Goliath episodes, KARR, et al, were all exciting escapism.

Hannah Louise Shearer was involved with the first KARR episode, as I recall. An "amoral+naive" version of KITT as opposed to being truly evil was the perfect touch in that episode.

An easy save for the Geordi scenes that really make this episode more than the sum of its parts, more than the obvious in how some people would want to leave, as well as the camerawork (more face close-up drama that works well),

TNG Season 5: "The Masterpiece Society"

is now saved. It's still another one that feels like "We hated 'Pen Pals' so we'll do something gen-x sarcastic with it" at times, but individual set pieces save it, and it's nice that the writers remembered that Geordi's VISOR exists for character-driven purposes and not just because it looks cool. (Unlike other season 5 extravaganzas... )

I'll give it to Basics, Part I, which is a great action ep that hits all the right notes, ties up VOY Season 2 nicely with a great cliffhanger, and Kolbe hits the big beats very well.

Totally, I put Basics 1 over Basics 2 because the planet stuff in 2 doesn't really work for me, but the ship stuff with the Doctor and Suder is some of the greatest we get in the whole show.

Through The Looking Glass is when the MU was still interesting.

Saving "Resistance" partly for Mulgrew's touching performance as Janeway, but mainly because by God we got Joel Grey into the Trek universe! This theater fan's jaw pretty much never left the floor during his scenes.
