Game The Most Disliked Sixth Season Episode, 2025 Edition

THE OBJECTIVE: A sudden-death elimination game in which we remove our personal favorite episodes/movies from a themed list, until we arrive at the episode that is, if not the worst, at least the most disliked.

It's a framework to say positive things about episodes from across the franchise.

THE RULES: Below is a list of the 6th season episodes of every Trek show to run that long - TNG, DS9, and VOY.

Eliminate/save your favorite, or the one you deem the ‘best' of what currently remains.
Post something you enjoy about the episode you are saving, and copy-and-paste the list with your choice removed.

You can use any standard you like to judge which option is "best." You can save episodes for being widely recognized “best Trek” classics, or for idiosyncratic qualities that no one appreciates but you.

As you get down the list, you might have to reach more and more for something to enjoy about an episode, and it's OK to eventually save episodes for being "less bad."

But -- no tactical voting! You cannot remove an episode because you don’t think anyone else will, or because you feel it would threaten your preferred episode's chance to “win.”

You can take multiple turns.

Leave at least 2 eliminations by other posters before you eliminate another episode.

I will start by going straight to an obvious one - "In The Pale Moonlight."

I will try to praise it an un-obvious way, though. Some of my favorite Memory Alpha trivia is that they began developing this story as a Jake showcase episode, but he ultimately does not appear at all in the finished version. And this was excellent judgment! I really think it would knock the alchemy of the episode all out of whack if Jake was in it. That would make it just too harsh and too far, if Sisko's son was witnessing him while he was putting himself in this degraded moral state.

Obviously, there are plenty of episodes without Jake in them (the only Trek series regular to be absent from more episodes than he's in!), so it's not exactly unique, but it was wise to leave him off the board this week.

Thank god they got to the Sisko-focused final version, and didn't give us either of these much less satisfying ideas instead:

Fields's original premise revolved around Jake "watergating" First Minister Shakaar. He discovers an undisclosed secret about Shakaar from his days in the Bajoran Resistance which, if it got out, would bring down the Shakaar government and throw Bajor into chaos. When Jake tells his father about the secret, Sisko tries to stop him from publishing it. However, when the staff-writers went to work on Fields's story, they couldn't make it work, and so they altered the basic premise to Jake discovering something about his own father. Ronald D. Moore compared this premise to the film "All the President's Men". (AOL chat, 1998) This was the idea around which Michael Taylor composed his first draft of the script – the inherent conflict between Jake and Sisko. The story would begin when Jake tries to get an interview with Garak for the Federation News Service, but Garak is uninterested in being interviewed. Jake presses him, but Garak won't budge, and so Jake goes to his father to try to get him to put some pressure on Garak. However, Sisko tells him to stay away from Garak altogether. Intrigued, Jake begins to investigate, and he discovers that his father and Garak are involved in shady dealings and are trying to bring the Romulans into the Dominion War by lying to them about the Dominion's so-called plan to invade Romulan space. (Star Trek: Deep Space Nine Companion, pp. 556-557)

I've got lots of favourites on this list, and it's difficult to choose an absolute so I'm going to start with one of the fun faves: DS9: "One Little Ship". Unlike one or two others, I can accept everything presented in this episode without having to suspend my disbelief. Well, except for the bit where the tiny runabout exits the plasma shaft straight into engineering - no blast doors/airlock equivalent
Anyway, despite some photon torpedoed Jem'Hadar, this is a light-hearted, funny ep, and I love the end when Odo and Quark question Bashir and O'Brien about whether they might be a little shorter than they used to be. And then step down from the raised area they were standing on when Bashir and O'Brien leave!

So much to save, so much to gleefully rip into, but...

TNG: "Timescape"

has another of those high-concept sci-fi thjngies that, in true Trek style, don't always stand up to scrutiny, but manage to sell the premise so effectively that it just doesn't matter (e.g. caloric intake in the accelerated regions).

Seeing the crew in various situations, and the underlying reasons why, is really nicely done.

I recall the HD blu-ray edition didn't have as much shadow detail for the smiley face, but Picard losing his sanity is well-realized and works so well with the story that it's impossible to not like.

While no mention of Moriarty's ex flame was given, which is odd for a supposedly sentient AI, and how there's one slight giveaway that trips up the simulation-within-a-simulation, but it's not irksome. Barclay being involved is inspired and leads to a fun high-concept quandary.

Doubly so, since they couldn't re-use Holmes for several years and when they do, they can't reference anyone from that allegedly icky season two (which isn't)?

Cor, some of the sound effects came from TWOK as well, juxtaposing even against the TOS Enterprise was quite the laugh at the time as well... so many subtle dry gags, it's great stuff, but that's another story.

Saving Far Beyond The Stars. This episode deserves to be one of the franchise's most talked about. Beyond epitomizing Star Trek's view on experiences of race and justice, the writing, acting, and directing are all supreme. Every word is perfectly chosen, even Jimmy dropping an n-bomb. Moreover, it is not a gratuitous diversion into an alternative reality: each character in Benny's world is a commentary on the main character in Sisko's world. The episode could have been its own pilot. Genius.

I hadn't seen it in the longest time, and just the other week I watched "Frame Of Mind" and found it much better than I remembered. So creepy and unsettling!

I often have TNG on as I go to bed, and that one did NOT make the usual soothing bedtime viewing. I had such freaky nightmares!

The quality of an episode depends upon the life given to the characters.

After a season of truly being Q-less, TNG gives us two Q-bies this season and I rather like this one better. It's a lovely allegory, not unlike "X-Men", and it's got some great f/x and gags, like these:

It's easy to ignore the big briefing babble 'bout how she came from Kansas and her parents got swept up by a tornado (Q did that too, shame we didn't get to see that as the Oz and obvious self-references couldn't have been any less sledgehammery, but the episode still finds a life of its own and is easily worth saving.)

[Bad Thoughts]

Saving Survival Instinct . This is the only other episode for Seven of Nine that I really like. She explores the guilt of choices made when not being compelled by the Borg, made out of fear and guilt, but ultimately making bad choices, employing to employ the violent tools of the Borg to assuage her fears. The background comedy is fun. One of the more psychologically complicated Voyager episodes.

ETA: I recently saw someone post praise of RDM for all the shows he has worked on: TNG, DS9, Voyager, BSG, Outlander, For All Mankind. He probably is the most influential person in Sci Fi since 1990.
