"A direct hit" by your definition to the neck of TOS-E and E-A could have annihilated the connection between the two in comparison. A torpedo is not going to just get lost because "my God the neck is just so thin! (And flimsy)."Enterprise-D's is wider and looks bloated like the broadside of a barn! Look at original NCC-1701 and Refit. Less forward saucer sections too. And Geez, how many windows installed on D? E and J are even worse designs...
