The setting: Why TNG and not TOS?

There already has been an animated series based on the original series.

Why didn't they choose a TNG-esque setting instead of a TOS setting? They could have good for a TOS setting and take advantage of it's inherent cheesiness and over acting. It'd be a lot more fitting in that era instead of the TNG era.

Because by doing it in 2380 the can reference/make fun of all of TOS, TAS, TNG, DS9, Voyager, Enterprise, Discovery...?

Honestly I’m fine with it...the franchise was gripped and dominated by TOS Nostalgia for like 15 years so it’s nice to see TNG (the most popular part of the tv side of the franchise by raw numbers) get some attention.
