Transition and explanation of SNW into TOS technology

Going back to an older point in the thread, it was mentioned that I thought it'd be a great idea to do a retro episode of SNW for the 60th Anniversary and how the Enterprise should absolutely be filmed as a model. Now being that I'm sure they won't open up the glass and film the original in the Smithsonian, @AdmiralBuck just finished the next best thing.

It's the best model I've ever seen of the original and could absolutely be used to make a retro, 60s style episode.

I know a lot of folks like SNW, but the original Enterprise didn't need replaced. I've seen too many amateur creators bring the ship to life in a modern context and it still runs rings around anything else created by the Star Trek franchise.

Nothing needs replaced. Nothing has been replaced.

But, it's a ship and it does the job just fine. SNW captures one aesthetic, TOS a different one. I don't mind different takes on it because ultimately it's just a model for the adventure. I love the TOS one, but I love variations as well.

Mileage will vary.

I would've been happy to be able to see where the torpedoes come from. Small details, nothing too dramatic.

I think one of the things that kept TOS on the front burner of pop culture for as long as it was, was the lack of "details". It allowed people's imaginations to run wild.

Once they started trying to explain how things worked and filling in the blanks, I think they began to lose people.

I love The Enterprise, in all its different versions, pretty much equally. TOS version, the Refit, Strange New Worlds... they're all beautiful in different ways, but they all have a certain grace about them. When I think of The Enterprise, my mind never goes to the D, or the E, or any other letter. It's always just the 1701, followed closely by the NX-01.

For me, the Galaxy Class will always be my "Favorite Design" so far.

I like the Refit more than the TOS version, the SNW is pretty high up there, I like it more than the TOS iteration.

In my judgment, the biggest mistakes that Trek production artists make these days is to overdesign things. The understanding seems to have been lost that ships don't need to be overly complicated, with tons of detail that isn't necessarily necessary. Matt Jefferies understood this concept, which is why his design has passed the test of time. I simply don't see people 50 years from now holding the Discoprise in the same level of regard as the TOS E.

The Constitution class ship is my favorite, in all its variations. Yes, the TOS version is iconic-first things often are. But the refit and Kelvin and SNW versions are all acceptable as well.

Ultimately, it's a ship and it needs to do a job. Nothing more.
