Data is dreaming, it's metaphorical allusion for a conduit that was build somewhere and transported to the ship, built in a place where the new warp core wasn't or else they'd be worse off... Picard stalling to get out of a situation reminds me of a handful of 1980s sitcoms...

Then it becomes another holodeck romp.

Not horribly so, but it's still a jolt. Especially as some of its ideas would have been plausible if the show didn't become one big happy family by season one episode three.

While it descends into "holodeck fantasy", complete with better than top-notch reprogramming by Seska. If only Seska had become a movie critic instead of rebel, then we'd have "Seska and Chakbert."

Another space lifeform is a plot point, but this time it's not just a fritter for the crew to discover, some other crew is making use of them - like squeezing water from a turnip - and that raises an ethical dilemma. Especially as the dogfights coming from the Federation ship ensures that one party has no dilemma. Only this time, it's rogue Ransome and the Equinox doing it.

Still a shame about the music underscoring some great material, but it's still a hair's thickness better than a surprising amount of TNG 5-7's.
