Game The Most Disliked Klingon Episode/Movie, 2025 Edition

Looking for Par'Mach... was hilarious. It was fun to see Grilka again too.

Bashir's face in sickbay as the wounded lovers kept turning up was a picture! :D

Death by snu-snu? Not this week.

DS9 Season 5: "Let He Who Is Without Sin..."

The story would rather focus on "Here's how to break up, take notes and remember that for when your to-be ex..." over some of the franchise's biggest and more urgent questions to date that were far more worthy of the screen time than the snu-snu.

Gotta hand it to Monte Markham who plays the leader of the new essentialists who's raising very valid points about the Borg, Dominion, and a list of other major baddies very well indeed. Maybe going overboard, but it's sad when he's completely not listened to.

Worf makes for a great focal point as, yet again, he has to make a tough choice. What's glaring is how Worf does and the script drops the ball afterward.

And we also find out why Worf doesn't want to get jiggy with the humans (poor Troi...). Sheesh, there are a few positions where he'd remain fairly harmless, don't people think of what to do in the bedroom in the 24th century? But I digress. Worf, the security dude, is the perfect person for Fullteron, leader of the New Essentialists (sounds like a Devo song, doesn't it?)

That said, even the clunky execution of this one's strong ideas outweighs other episodes and I sat here half an hour changing my mind three times. I'd rather rewatch this one than many of what's left. Or some that have been saved, which are otherwise trash had it not been for Worf in them at all. IMHO, YMMV, EIEIO, OFC, ETC...

So more of the goodness of Monte

"Sons and Daughters" is another episode where Worf is trying to understand Alexander. At the end, Alexander also joins the House of Martok - both of them have found "Klingon redemption" this way. Elsewhere in the episode, Dukat is being as slimy as only he can. Unlike Worf, he's not really concerned about his child except as a tool. That also means DS9 iis off the board

Again, just based off what I’ve watched recently, which means no DS9/VOY for sure, I’m going to knock out The Cost of Living. I’ve been doing Worf’s ‘honour/Alexander arc’ in a back to front way by watching episodes in a random order. And I like Troi’s Mom. I know many don’t. Nice episode.

Saving Through the Valley Of Shadows. This episode seems to want to do the mythos thing, which Trek should avoid. However, it uses the trappings of Klingon spirituality to give Pike something interesting to react to.

I tisket, a tasket, Sela's gotta basket (case):

TNG Season 5: “Redemption II”

Zoiks, these are getting harder for me to save. Especially as while this one's a Klingon story, this is THE Klingon story in fact, but we already know Worf will win and return, so on that level it's a snoozefest at best. So where's that mattress got to...

...Eureka, I found it! It's really side character Sela who elevates this story beyond all things predictable, with a fantastic reveal that, thanks to Picard letting alternate-universe Yar go back in time to try to save the 1701-C and get Richard afterward but without having to wait two decades to see some graying balding fat dude like me in the corner at the bar where booze adds to the pounds more than it does to fry the liver with onions and spice mixes alongside, who helped cause the influence and resultant problem between the three big-heineyed factions.

Obviously, the big tachyon net needs to be larger than the glaring plot hole in all this to even begin to work because the ships will all warp around it as they have plenty of fuel.

Also, swap Data with Barclay and that subplot would feel a lot less contrived and a lot more authentic, a lot more interesting, a lot more worth the time, etc. Especially as Data is even acting emotional when begging passive-aggressively Picard for a chance to command (!!), as if he hadn't been in command before, and by the episode ends has proven yet again he's better at the technical/research areas* had it not been for season 5's penchant of altering characters to fit the plot - I don't see how the notion that he's emulating emotions is the real reason and, indeed, a season 7 story where Data takes command and has to talk to Worf is done far, far better than this episode (season 7 was showing more obvious burnout compared to season 5's "plot by numbers", but it still had a second wind from time to time.)

* Which are clearly valuable in different ways, unlike what a season 6 story might claim otherwise make claims about via Picard himself...

In a better story, I wouldn't even mention how puny and sappy the Sutherland bridge looks. Did the battle bridge set get discarded by then with no room to redress? With what TNG had shown in the last season alone, this new bland bridge feels like a Picard's quarters' broom closet massively underwhelming budget-saving tactic and nothing in season 5 stands out making up for it... except for a guest star who was a surprising disappointment to fans in 1991 due to lack of use, making the season feel even cheaper as a result, never mind most of its lackluster incidental music. Season 5 was a turning point, but not in the best of directions. At least we got DS9 as a consolation prize, and a good one it was as well.

Thinking of season 7:

(Truly a fantastic scene. Worf gets to be impudent one, and Data's got the command thing beautifully and, surprisingly, in character! Even the music doesn't distract. All in all, it's not bad for season 7 at all...)

Thinking back of season 3's goodness:

Lastly, thinking of the Sutherland and Picard's broom closet, here's a space that's actually much roomier on the inside - looks more impressive, too:

(Okay, the music's a little bombastic but I've heard far worse...)

"Point Of Light" is one I'm a big fan of. Fantastic production work on Qo'noS once again, and it improbably makes a functional story out of the total illogical mess made of L'Rell's situation at the end of season 1.

I feel like SNW is staying away from bringing her back just to avoid having to redo her look to bring it in line with the fixes they did in their season 2, and that's a shame! She was fantastic! I would LOVE to see what she could do with prosthetic makeup that actually functions.

I actually really like the season 1 Disco Klingon look, from an angle of pure aesthetics. But once you factor in functionality, I think it's probably the worst prosthetic makeup I've ever seen. The actors simply couldn't act in it, and I was always stunned by how often I could see it separating at the seams. And these are the takes they used! I can't imagine what's on the cutting room floor.

This was a great series finale. And it pains me to say it was the end of a wonderful show, particularly since it could have gone so much longer.

Okay, Cyfa beat me to it.
