DS9 is Sisko's house, the Defiant is his car, and Rio Grande is his motorbike. Or his horse.
They didn't need to AND they didn't want to.They couldn't have used the set for a DS9 S2 episdoe?
According to RHW, the genesis of the Defiant was the desire to have a set that was easier to film on. The crew was frustrated when filming because it was too difficult to pit more than two actors in a scene. It was when ISB decided that the heroes needed more firepower to fight the Dominion that the new runabout became the new starship.I seem to recall from Ex-Astris-Scientia what was the back area of the TNG Runabout was reused in DS9 for some rooms of the Nebula-class USS Prometheus in Second Skin. Don't know if it was ever used for anything else though.
Yeah it's fascinating looking at the concept art and seeing the ship grow over time. Originally it just looks like a big runabout and then it gets more gnarly and scary looking and then they softened it back. I originally thought the Defiant was going to be like Galaxy-class sized. I was shocked at how "small" it was. Then it shot the shit out of the Jem Hadar ship with it's gatling gun phasers and I was onboard.According to RHW, the genesis of the Defiant was the desire to have a set that was easier to film on. Ah ha! We never got the crew lounge on DS9, because they found the Runabout set to be too small, not wanting a second small set?According to RHW, the genesis of the Defiant was the desire to have a set that was easier to film on. You're not wrong! Here's another way to break up the show.#6 How would you describe the setting of the show? DS9 or DS9 and the Defiant? No right or wrong answer, just curious.
I internally tend to divide the show into Star Trek: DS9, and Star Trek: Dominion War.
You're drawing a line between two things that aren't necessarily connected.Ah ha! We never got the crew lounge on DS9, because they found the Runabout set to be too small, not wanting a second small set?
Why?You're drawing a line between two things that aren't necessarily connected.
It was never seen on DS9, just TNG's "Timescape."1. We (almost) never see the rear section of the Runabouts in DS9.

Wolfe said they "wanted a ship in which they could send more people out on an adventure".
Those are two facts. You're assuming one directly leads into the other; that we didn't see the rear for two full seasons because they thought the ship was too small.
A tiny piece of it is seen in The Visitor. It was never seen on DS9, just TNG's "Timescape."
I'm talking about the two years of DS9 before the Defiant showed up.#2 The rear room was seen at the end of TNG's 6th season, so DS9 had only been on for 1 season.
Are you sure? Time index?A tiny piece of it is seen in The Visitor.
I'm only talking about DS9 S2. The set didn't exist yet in S1, and the Defiant showed up in the S3 premiere, so in hindsight, S2 would make the most sense for the rear lounge to be see like it was on TNG with the set being a recent build.I'm talking about the two years of DS9 before the Defiant showed up.

It says nothing regarding why the rear of the Runabout wasn't featured on DS9.
I think you think I'm arguing something that I am not. This literally explains it
If one set is "too small," logic would dictate the other small set will also be "too small."I think you think I'm arguing something that I am not.
The point I am attempting to make is that there was no stated connection between the want for a bigger space and any reason why they never used the rear section for that purpose.
We evidently are misunderstanding each other so I'll bow out from here on. I've got some Cobra Kai to watch.![]()
Nice post, but what did it have to do with my comments?According to RHW, the genesis of the Defiant was the desire to have a set that was easier to film on. It makes sense to me that the Defiant would be relatively small. As long as they can support their weapons systems, a smaller ship is quicker to maneuver and accelerate and more effective.Yeah it's fascinating looking at the concept art and seeing the ship grow over time.
