Game The Most Disliked Fifth Season Episode, 2025 Edition

Saving LD: "Dos Cerritos." Watching the pairs of alternate characters interact was a riot. However, I admit I'm actually saving it because of the one hilarious line "What in the Kzinti f:censored:k is going on here?!"

:guffaw:

The list is shorter and gets shorter still. In the Flesh will not fall on my watch, one of my earliest childhood memories is of Scorpion part 2 so my weakness for all things 8472 compels me.

Saving "Extreme Risk," which, however belatedly, showed some reaction from VOY's Maquis to the deaths of their Alpha Quadrant comrades. Roxann Dawson brought a suitable intensity to her role, and the too-often-neglected Chakotay-B'Elanna friendship -- a bond I always found appealing -- played a vital role.

One DS9 episode left! But I'm saving Voyager's "Nothing Human". Because I thought it did a good job of tackling its moral dilemma and having the story play out as a drama instead of lecture.

The Best Exotic Nanite Hotel was classic goofy Lower Decks, plus that space resort was cool.

It hasn't aged well -- and was far from perfect even way-back-when -- but "The Outcast" meant a great deal to me, back in the day. It's the only episode of any Trek that I ever sent a fan letter for. Points for trying to be about something, and something important.

I will save Discovery's "Whistlespeak" for being a proper Burnham and Tilly away team adventure on a strange new world. Basically what I wanted from Disco from the start. It's one of the least-loved episodes and I'm not sure why because I really liked it.

TNG: "Silicon Avatar"

Saving "A SIMPLE INVESTIGATION".

Still a good Odo story. It's only real crime (pun intended) is that it should have happened when he was a solid.

Alas my time zone makes it so I wont be able to witness the grand finale but by now Federation sensors have detected Unification II being saved from this list. Empress Sela demands it.

Of what's left, I think I'm going with Silicon Avatar. The Crystalline Entity was a nasty, formidable foe and I shed no tears at its destruction... but nonetheless, a story of how a person can be destroyed by their need for revenge.

DIS: "Mirrors" Book and Burnham find the ISS Enterprise while looking for Moll and L'ak. We learn Mirror Saru captained the ship containing former slaves from the MU to find peace in the PU. Unfortunately that information is told to us and not shown.

That means Disco's almost safe now. And I'm saving the last of Lower Decks, "Shades of Green". I don't think there's a single bad episode with T'Lyn in it, and if there is it's not this one.

Saving "THINK TANK".

Great concept. Kurros and that think tank were pretty unique villains, and it was a shame we never saw them again.

Jason Alexander was clearly loving his role, and it made him an even better character than what was probably on the page.

Someone to Watch Over Me is hilarious, with a wonderful chemistry between Ryan and Picardo throughout.

Plus props to the producers for having Sandrines reappear, nearly my favourite VOY program.

There's a strange lack of communication over Alexander: his mother doesn't bother telling his father he exists for several years and in "New Ground" his grandparents don't bother telling his father that they can no longer look after him. No wonder Alexander has feelings of abandonment. Worf, I feel, tries hard at parenting, something that does not come naturally, but rarely gets any credit.

TNG: "Violations"

"The Perfect Mate." Famke and Patrick Stewart have great chemistry. Had they not nailed the guest casting so perfectly, this episode could have gone sooooo wrong.

Of what's left,

TNG: "The Masterpiece Society"

is saved.

Only because of the Geordi scenes where, after the disaster of "Disaster", fan outcry surely had someone looking up all the old episodes that showed how the VISOR had features and benefits that were quickly unused for the sake of a misguided plot. But, during all that, I also like to imagine how they saw "Pen Pals" and decided to make a highly cynical version of it instead, almost as retort. So with this story, involving a species that would be wiped out by a planet gone wrong, this time the high concept sci-fi aspect wasn't quite the same, both in terms of "planet problem of the week" and in terms of contriving the people to such an impracticably stupid degree.

Add in the Troi romance, which also isn't exactly believable, but the plot demands we think it's the best thing ever... season 5 TNG was really on a big roll with so much garbage.

And yet, the Geordi scenes were damn good and absolutely save it from being the most disliked, by some margin, as they also prove that, often, even a bad story has a good moment within.

(Gee, Geordi's VISOR was remembered by somebody for once this season?!!)
