Tin Man episode question

Nakita Akita

Commodore
Commodore
in the Tin Man episode, after Tam ( the red haired Betazoid guy) goes inside the Tin Man ship/alien, are we supposed to think that Tin Man and Tam were destroyed by the
Star that exploded?
I have seen the episode numerous times and always just assumed that Tam and Tin Man left together to explore the universe.
But I actually listed to Data and Troi :ack:at the end of the episode talking to one another.
And suddenly I felt like Tin Man stayed at the exploding star rather than, I always thought before Warping the hell out if that area.
So which is it?
Death for Tin man and Tam?
Or explorers of the Galaxy?

Well, that ended quickly.

Ask another.
Was it just me or did everyone want to ouch Tam in the face when he mouthed off at Picard?
I even wanted to punch him for mouthing off at Riker.
Well, I wanted Riker to at least go off on him!
Did anyone else?
Probably everyone.
He could have moved to Ferenginar (Ferengi Planet) Betazoid can't hear their thoughts.
Who thinks that the Ferengi would have kicked him off of their planet?

As Data returns after the revelation that TinM and (TM) and Tam had vanished, so they couldn't have been turned into hot tasty marshmallows by the nova. Maybe they moved to another dimension, but that's the old standby cliche. Still, if no natural phenomenon can travel faster than light, then interdimensional travel-- ugh, I never liked the idea of "organic technology"... somebody was on magic mushrooms that day... but TM still overcomes the tacky idea of an organic, natural critter than can somehow be FTL...

So they're exploring out there, somewhere... either physically or metaphysically (in spirit...)

Of greater interest, if TM was truly suicidal it would have let the Romulans zap it to begin with. (TM knew of Tam's presence and felt there was a moment of hope.)

Not really. He is quite obnoxious, but the episode also makes it very obvious that he is struggling with social interaction and his condition. Similar to Melora on DS9.

"As in Tam Elbrun of the Ghorusda Disaster?"

Riker blamed him for getting his friends killed, so that relationship was never going to be good. Realistically, his condition made it so that he couldn't have relationships with any humanoids. He was a flat out arrogant, dick with very few redeeming qualities.

Enter a telepathic "Tin Man" being named Gomtuu. He finally had a being that he could interact telepathically.

If Gomtuu could destroy a Romulan Warbird and severely damage the Enterprise, I have to believe that he would have the capacity to escape from a Super Nova.

I've noticed a lot of folks really take a disliking to Tam, but honestly, there's something about the actor's performance that makes it sympathetic. The guy is suffering an unimaginable torture

I really like the comparison that Data makes at the end of this episode. It's the only time we get recognition that he understands he's almost uniquely suited for being where he is on that ship of technological wonders that mirror his own. It's almost as if they are the flip side of a coin that Gomtuu & Tam are the reverse of

for me personally, it's always been the latter. Kind of fits with star trek's whole positive narrative of the future if youreally stop and think about it.

It wouldn't have been a suicide pact. Tam - as we saw with Data - is a curious fella. He wants to find a route out of his torment. Tinman suffers a desolate loneliness. The two meet, become enchanted with each other without being overwhelmed and begin anew. It would be pointless to just kill themselves having finally found what they wanted after years of struggle.

There is a degree of suicide involved if an immortal robots agrees to become involved with a Betazoid who has only maybe 40 years left until he expires from natural causes.

40 years?

Seriously why bother?

Unless Tinman plans on keeping Tam alive by any means necessary for the next ten thousand years.

Cyberconversion surgery?

Futurama head in a pickle jar?

Digitized psyche... Chuck off the fleshie leftovers?

Tin man is an ancient being.
The others that used to live within him died off possibly or, I like to think, they live on as Tin Man is able to incorporate other beings into himself and continue on with their consciousness being part of the others and of himself.
Tam will die someday and join the others, but because of his telepathy he'll be a conduit between to others and Tin Man.

Okay, there are some holes in this theory I think, but it sounds nice.

It's 30 years later since 1990 when Tinman aired.

Harry Groener is 68, so Tam might be as Well.

Tinman has ten years left with this dude, and they are probably not as good as the first ten years together, before he has to go back on the prowl for fresh-meat.

Tinman had the memories of the original crew to keep him sate, but he was still trying to kill himself.

Unless this wasn't an authentic suicide attempt?

Attention seeking drama queen?

It's the future. Plus maybe Betazoid live longer than humans, so I'm thinking, 50-60 more years.

Deanna isn't ageing any slower Than Marina or Frakes...

They used to look the same age.

Now days Will looks like his wife's dad.
