The Most Disliked Episode Directed By David Livingston, 2025 Edition

THE OBJECTIVE: A sudden-death elimination game in which we remove our personal favorite episodes/movies from a themed list, until we arrive at the episode that is, if not the worst, at least the most disliked.

It's a framework to say positive things about episodes from across the franchise.

THE RULES: Below is a list of episodes from TNG, DS9, VOY, & ENT directed by David Livingston -- Trek's most prolific director! 62 episodes directed across 4 series.

Eliminate/save your favorite, or the one you deem the ‘best' of what currently remains.
Post something you enjoy about the episode you are saving, and copy-and-paste the list with your choice removed.

You can use any standard you like to judge which option is "best." You can save episodes for being widely recognized “best Trek” classics, or for idiosyncratic qualities that no one appreciates but you.

As you get down the list, you might have to reach more and more for something to enjoy about an episode, and it's OK to eventually save episodes for being "less bad."

But -- no tactical voting! You cannot remove an episode because you don’t think anyone else will, or because you feel it would threaten your preferred episode's chance to “win.”

You can take multiple turns.

Leave at least 2 eliminations by other posters before you eliminate another episode.

New players are always welcome. You do not have to already be a "most disliked game" regular to dive in.

A standard assassin tale that was lampooned in major films by the time "The Naked Gun" was released (which involved setting up an assassination, whodathunk?), but this episode really has some robust direction - plus a return of the VISOR being used as more than a 'hey cool, it's a late-80s style!" gimmick. Not that the VISOR wasn't ever not cool, it's awesome,. but it got used so little - and when they let Geordi out of Engineering, they'd too-often forgotten, but before I turn this into a cheesy whinefest lambasting "Disaster" for the umpeenth time...

Ha! Jumping in early and saving the greatest episode of any Trek, Classic, Berman era, or Nu: "The Visitor". Lofton, Brooks, and Todd totally sell this powerful story of a father's love and a son's devotion. I rarely reach the end without tearing up.

Sorry for the music as that really drags this episode down to the point that even the best direction is having to work overtime to keep it going, but - guess what - Livingston manages the miracle, quite nicely. (Yup, more warped weird wordplay and look at what those 80s kids got to play with, sheesh... note that the zapper shown was the original version, after complaints they made it faddish 80s neon orange to help differentiate it from a real zapper of the sort that's only used in sci-fi shows since real guns don't look anything like it unless you're 50 feet away and not wearing trifocals so it'd still be easy to mistake... but, yup, parents and others did complain at the time...)

I mean, "Harbinger" is a particularly lousy ENT episode and just all-around disappointing episode of Berman Trek, but I don't think that's on David Livingston. That's on the script.

The manhood measuring contest and cheesy fistfight between Malcolm and Major Hayes just dragged down an episode that actually had a cool subplot about the Sphere Builder body being found.

Another DS9 save from me, and another episode featuring Doctor Bashir: DS9: "Inter Arma Enim Silent Leges". I loathe the concept of Section 31 and every Trek incarnation of it - except for in the series in which it was first introduced, and this ep had me hooked. I thought all the scheming and manipulation was cleverly done, and poor Bashir fell for it.
Plus, it was good to see another Intrepid-class ship in the Bellerophon, and another outing for that brown dress with the gold roses that first appeared during the launch of the Enterprise-B in Generations.

The Die is Cast is the excellent conclusion to Improbable Cause.

It had everything from compelling dialogue, and amazing action.

I love the ominous dialogue from the shapeshifter saying that after the events in the episode, only the Federation and Klingons are left, and that they wouldn't be obstacles for long.

Still so many powerhouse episodes remain on the list. Plucking one of them at random this time has saved Stigma. A great allegory to aids and Vulcans, much like elves in various media often have such superiority complexes that is fun to peer into the dark underbelly of their society which even the reformed High Command had. T'Pau was considered ruthless in her application of logic, not to mention the logic extremists which let's face it could have been weeded out in such an advanced society of they really wanted to.

"You are Cordially Invited" is one of the few episodes that I will watch as a stand-alone. There's the Klingon version of a stag party - not at all what O'Brien and Bashir are expecting, Nog's dancing at Jadzia's party, Sisko making sure the wedding goes ahead, that dress - and the episode ending as Bashir and O'Brien move in to attack Worf. Great fun all around.
