Game The Most Disliked 2-Part or Double Episode, 2025 Edition

THE OBJECTIVE: A sudden-death elimination game in which we remove our personal favorite episodes/movies from a themed list, until we arrive at the episode that is, if not the worst, at least the most disliked.

It's a framework to say positive things about episodes from across the franchise.

THE RULES: Below is a list of every 2-hour, 2-part, or double episode from a Star Trek series.

Eliminate/save your favorite, or the one you deem the ‘best' of what currently remains.
Post something you enjoy about the episode you are saving, and copy-and-paste the list with your choice removed.

You can use any standard you like to judge which option is "best." You can save episodes for being widely recognized “best Trek” classics, or for idiosyncratic qualities that no one appreciates but you.

As you get down the list, you might have to reach more and more for something to enjoy about an episode, and it's OK to eventually save episodes for being "less bad."

But -- no tactical voting! You cannot remove an episode because you don’t think anyone else will, or because you feel it would threaten your preferred episode's chance to “win.”

You can take multiple turns.

Leave at least 2 eliminations by other posters before you eliminate another episode.

DS9's “The Way Of The Warrior” may be my favourite episode of the whole franchise, so it has to be my favourite of this list. The story is so good that finally seeing DS9 cut loose with its upgraded weapons against a whole Klingon fleet was just the icing on the cake.

This is a ridiculously good set of episodes by the way, Star Trek really shines with its two parters.

Saving "CARETAKER".

The best pilot in the franchise alongside "EMISSARY". It was very, very well done. It had the advantage of having the Maquis set up in TNG and DS9 ahead of this so it could focus entirely on the story and setting. It helped with pacing because having to go into the Maquis and their background in the pilot would almost certainly have dragged it a bit.

The uncloaking of the Defiant was a "wow" moment, Odo finds his people and realises who his friends really are, and there's the very worrying plot that looks as though Our Heroes and the Principles of the Federation have been sold out by Starfleet Command...

Looking through this list, I don't see many that I actively enjoy and would want to rewatch (I hadn't realised that I wasn't that bothered about Trek 2 parters etc), but there are a handful to be going along with. Such as the DS9 and Lower Decks instalments.
So, my first save is "First First Contact/Grounded" because they're AWESOME! Apart from the obvious, I love FFC because it introduces Kimolu & Matt, Cetacean Ops, and the Rubber Ducky Room!

And Grounded shows that the Starfleet system of justice actually works.

Hey I think the list is missing PRO, Season 1: "Supernova".

I'm going to save Discovery's “Such Sweet Sorrow”, because it commits to its craziness so much that I couldn't help being swept along with it. The Enterprise goes full clown car and launches a million shuttles, that's fine, we got a fun action scene out of it. The ship is hit by a torpedo that can destroy the front of the saucer but not the one blast door that's right next to it... okay fine, I didn't want the Enterprise destroyed anyway. Nhan and Georgiou fight an evil AI with the gravity flipping around, I'm down for that. And so on.

It's just a mad stupid epic finale that deserves all the praise and parody it gets.

Saving LD, Season 5: "Fissure Quest/The New Next Generation. Mostly on the strength of part one, these episodes do what Lower Decks does best: exploring tropes, narratives, expectations of science fiction, Star Trek in particular. I love how it gave in to fan service and denied it two seconds later. lieutenant Kim is the only promotion for dozens of Kim's. The love between Bashir and Garak is improbable.

The late addition of Q, despite the hefty influence of Trelane, was done just right and with enough originality, to not only become a good recurring villain but an iconic one and with much potential just waiting at this point. Gene nailed it with this element.

The introductions to the new characters is rather nicely done.

The space jellyfish are a tad hokey, and dimorphic (blue and pink too, but note the twist), but I really do like that (a) they're really alien in concept, and (b) without Troi there to figure it out then Q'd have won.

Great music, too.

Admiral McCoy is a nice touch, though I wish Data had spouted more than just years for McCoy to say his "so precisely" bit.

No, it's not a carbon copy clone but goes in the opposite direction, which fits the series' premise rather beautifully.

Janeway's future self is a great twist, as well as why she goes all TOS by breaking all the rules to save her closest friends and entire crew and that franchise ice cream store stand by the corner she was jonesing for due to their perfect coffee ice cream blend...

The Borg gets a huge setback. Permanent? Well, every time we think they are done for they're not, so there's that...

The ending is perfect. I always debate any need for a post-finale followup, a la "Family" (TNG), but... naah. It'd get too maudlin or hokey. It ended at just the right way and at the right time.
