I would prefer new fresh characters who we could learn about over the course of the show, instead of previously seen characters.
There was also one for the TOS crew, at least briefly. For what it's worth, there was a whole series of books (Star Trek Next Generation: Starfleet Academy) published back in the 1990s, targeting a tween/young-teen audience.
I think an Academy series could do well with cameos, without necessarily losing focus on the new characters. And a 4 book series that followed the NuTrek characters in the Academy, though Kirk never meets Spock and Scotty is absent, in keeping with the films. As well as a comic series following new characters and tying it in a bit with the movie ones.
Well, the main characters would be new, but there would be appearances of old characters where it made sense to include them. Guest lecturers, visitors, family/family friends, etc...
The Academy series could be based on a apprentice cruise on a ship.A Starfleet Academy series would be interesting though but I would rather watch a series on a starfleet ship doing explorations and so on. I find it more interesting that way.
This would probably be the best way to go.... have a revolving door of different characters?
I say no to the CW-fication of Trek. If such a series is going to be about the antics and romances of a bunch of "mouth-breather" (Uhura's description of Kirk in nuTrek)Nah. I don't need my Trek CWified. Nor do I want to spend 60 minutes watching a bunch of twenty somethings learn about heroics in a classroom. I'd rather watch actual heros doing actual heroics...or at least utterly messing things up on a planetary scale despite the best of intentions.
That one episode with Wesley and NotTomParisButKinda was enough academy drama to last me a lifetime, and that involved a student dying from negligence and a coverup. That's the most extreme event you can have at a school. There's no topping it, at best you're going to ape it. And an academy show would drag that plot out over 1 or 2 whole seasons. No thank you.
This for me is the crux of the problem - when we've seen cadets before they've had to come up with convoluted reasons for them to actually do anything (Nog being the prime example, how long was that training assignment..?) As they always seem to be based on a world described as a totally safe paradise.Nor do I want to spend 60 minutes watching a bunch of twenty somethings learn about heroics in a classroom
There might be mileage in a show where something is wrong at the academy itself, a la Buffy or Class, but I'd have to wonder why in an era where weird phenomena are common they wouldn't just get the Starfleet bogeyman cleanup crew in,
