Roddenberry had created his own legend via the fan circuit at that point. The reality of the man was not as well-known as it is now.

Wellll… except they -did- all have starship-riding protagonists who in fact either were, or fell into, at least some of the roles of the traditional Star Trek positions of Captain, Science person, Engineer, Doctor, etc; even early-Picard and Prodigy, certainly Discovery. I like them all… and in the crew-positions sense, ALL of them kept at least some hold on the formula, nor is this a bad thing.
EDIT: And I’ll admit, while Starfleet Academy may not have been my first choice, I’m more looking forward to it than I am to the workplace-comedy thing, which I see no need for (not least because we just did that, but in a Starfleet context). Plus, yeah, Section 31’s made me less optimistic about upcoming projects.
