Tawny Newsome and Justin Simien developing new live-action Trek series

When I say ‘vanity project,’ I’m talking about using the Star Trek name for things that have very little to do with Star Trek.

Although Stewart’s self-indulgent nature was straddling the line. But I would still hardly call PIC ‘Star Trek in name only.’
Pretty sure "Trek in name only" was tossed at Lower Decks before a second was shown. (And after too) Prodigy as well. Hell, Picard didn't get the "stamp of approval" until season three (YEAH That's real Star Trek)

So many people just want the old standard formula of starship, captain, first officer, engineer, Doctor, security, helm and navigation. There's more to Star Trek than that and there's more Star Trek universe than that.
Indeed.

It's why I want an Academy series so badly. Don't give me more of the same formula. That's neither bold or going.

Discovery works just fine for me. So did Lower Decks. So did Prodigy. Hell, Picard season 1 works just fine for me. None of those shows adhered to standard formula.

I’m happy that they worked for you. None of the above worked for me except Prodigy. But we were going to watch the shows no matter what, even the pile of shit that was the Section 31 movie. What matters more is, will deviating from the standard formula bring in tons of new viewers for CBS/Paramount?

Same with DS9, too. People these days forget how vitriolic the hate was against it at the beginning.

I don't know if there were Message Boards around when DS9 premiered, but maybe being very young when DS9 came out was a bit of an advantage. I loved DS9 mainly because it was Star Trek. My only foray into Trek was TNG so at the time I was one of those It's Trek = It's Awesome. I don't know where to even look for the early reviews and fan response of DS9 back in 1993.

I mean, I do prefer that, but I'm always happy to give things a go.

A comedic DS9 doesn't strike me as an instant winner, but it might be really good.

It was mainly USENET boards back then, I believe. The DS9 doc presents quite a few of those terrible comments.

Before The Next Generation even premiered, just based on the set photos, people were calling the show "Love Boat in Space" and calling Patrick Stewart "Captain Stubing".

Then there was this...

I love how Levar Burton was referred to as "the new Spock".

There were still a few direct dial-up BBS's back then that served as small community enclaves. The internet didn't really emerge as a viable option for most people until around 1993-4, a couple of years after DS9 started. Then, yeah, UseNet was the big thing once AOL gave the internet to people, but it was still horribly clunky A.F.

The New Spock!

Fuck me. How did they put 2 and 2 together only to somehow make 5?

Bizarre.

Beats me. Data was clearly the actual New Spock (or perhaps New Xon), and Geordi would have been... Sulu, at that point. Not Scotty for a season or two.
Depending on when the article was released the exact nature of description of the characters might not be known.

But I'd have to read it. I do find amusing the idea that Roddenberry was just trying to cash grab based on Star Trek as though he didn't with TOS.
