Game The Most Disliked Season Finale Antagonist, 2025 Edition

I think Osyraa was a much better villain than she's given credit for. Our first real insight into the smart and scheming Orion matriarchy. Before Lower Decks came along she was the best example of how Orion women control their society without needing to use sexual manipulation. Her diplomatic games with Vance were great.

Saving Species 10-C (DIS S4, "Coming Home"). On its own, the episode is not strong, but it does represent the culmination of the stories of an uneven season. The whole season explored complcated notions of perspective and emotion. Letting Book be in the wrong was a nice change of pace for most Trek, not really happening since Garak at the end of Season 4. Tig Natarro is used very well. Over all, its a finale that really tries to make the important resolution about establishing contact, even as their is an element of antagonistic violence as part of the story.

Saving Dolim, from "ZERO HOUR".

Scott MacDonald did every role in the franchise well... N'Vek, Tosk, Goran'agar, Rollins. This was no exception.

He was a damned good villain. So cold blooded... which makes sense, since he was Xindi-Reptilian.

Ascencia is a Star Trek villain that we see developed over a long period. As has been said above, the best villains are the ones who are convinced they are right and Ascencia's original motivation is to save her planet. The early Ascencia is a nice person who becomes dreadful over time. She's one of those baddies who, in other circumastance, would have been an equally convincing goody.

Lore. The quintessential TNG villain and foil for Data. Cold, calculating, petty, and vicious. You can just tell how much Spiner seems to relish being able to let loose and really chew the scenery with this character.

The Dominion War. Still Star Trek's greatest serialized story.

It's so weird to me Disco wanted to start with a war story. Trek's already covered that! There was no toping the Dominion War!

My phone really doesnt like copying and pasting lists like this.

Sela gets my vote now. Rare is it for actors to get more to do after theyve been killed off but Denise Crosby brought so much to the role of Sela and continued to into STO.

"Humans have a way of showing up when you least expect them" as she steps out of the shadows. A brilliant introduction.

She would have been my next vote as well, and that introduction was terrific! So glad that Ms Crosby returned for STO as well!

TNG had another belter of a cool character creation in Sela, due to the temporal anomaly causing 1701-C to appear in the future that allowed Yar to go back in time. True, the origins are not revealed until season 5's otherwise silly conclusion, but the appetite is whetted significantly by her reveal in this season finale as it's justly big and justly due. It's a shame season 5 did Sela such poor scripting in turn, because she should have been Tomalok's replacement as recurring baddie. Instead, it's a couple of throwaway joke scripts we get.

Not to be a thorn in the side with such a (t)horny situation involving Riker, but

Predatory Vines of Surata IV (TNG S2, "Shades Of Grey")

is next. It's one of two sci-fi shows that did the idea of sentient plants with gravitas, actors having verisimilitude, and plotting not going over the top with it all.

An unconventional baddie and potentially even sentient as season 2 had a thing about exploring sentience, it's either trying to get food, defend itself and surroundings, or something else, and you know I'll fathom something to cite.

The story? Well, take out the clip show and they're just exploring a planet for reasons. Maybe for mineral investigation, or viability for colonization. Riker was doing a geological sweep and thinks that rocks because he's bored of his usual surfeit of duties or something, and didn't want to get any of the ship's three dozen geologists down there or something.

Ignore the clip show stuff and there's intrigue in this, and intrigue that would have paid off differently - and far better - if it didn't devolve into the clip show because time and budget were out.

The real plot, as shown prior to the clipdeedoodles, exploring a new and dangerous world, should be par for the course instead of a one-off in favor of generic ambassador ferrying stuff. Whether the vines are truly sentient, or inspired by Venus flytraps, both, or other, is a little immaterial, they're a cool idea and reminder that other planets can be nasty and can have bacteria or viral maladies for possible zoonotic transmission. The end of season woes and clip show motif prevailing, had they not been an issue, could have been "The Disease" but done better and a decade earlier at that. Just not the same but, then again, considering who was afflicted by a long pointy object and he bangs everything else in the galaxy, the dirty humor actually fits in better than you'd think. Never mind that, for all we know, the vine and whatever was attached ot it was engaging in its reproductive cycle and, yup, Riker would be the ideal target so there's another bedpost notch right there!!

Also, coconut soap doesn't taste like coconut while washing your mouth out with it because you told a dirty joke.

I disliked Spiner in Picard 1, both as Data and Soong, and was tired of all these Soongs anyway. I cringed to find yet another one in Picard 2 but Adam Soong, the mad, bad and completely unfeeling scientist was an excellent villain. Definitely one of the better parts of that season.

I was also on the verge of saving the "Shades Of Grey" vines. That planet set and the vines are so well done!

I'll next save Neela from "In The Hands Of The Prophets." A chilling example of the dangers of religious extremism.

It's a shame that they didn't get the casting right on the first try, so she could have been more established in "The Forsaken" (though I also thought that first actress was good and never understood why they felt the need to recast). Giving Neela one line in "Duet" didn't really do it's job of making you think "here's a new recurring character!"

Since the writers' strike was already swinging more than a sixties party, the show had to do something quick and even do a subtle 4th wall break...

Commander Tebok & Sub-Commander Thei (TNG S1, "The Neutral Zone")

Their appearance and dialogue amounts to "Hi, we're here. We apologize for the Ferengi and promise to be used better as means to make up for all the misfires this year. With candy. And we have more info on the big holes in the ground as those happened to us as well. Please stay tuned!"

But that paid off because TNG made the Romulans better than the two times TOS tangled tersely with them.

Still, all they do is show up and, if nothing else, it proves the Borg were already sufficiently nearby, so did Q reeeeeeeeeeeally introduce them, much to the spitting chagrin of Janeway, or were they already there and Q really did lend more than a helping hand than people realized? (Or the scripters forgot that tiny detail, it's all good as we all forget things all the time, especially that handsome middle-aged single dude whom I saw in the mirror! So, there's also Narcissus of Borg-- but before I digress to the intended digression in advance... ) But the next time you're on a Borg ship, be on the lookout for Cratinus of Borg telling bawdy comedy. Or Adjunct Emperor Tiberius of Borg since he banned kissing due to the herpes outbreak (from 2000 years ago, look it up), ain't that swell? Well, those afflicted definitely thought it was "swell", just of a different sort... (Yum, more coconut soap...)

Cheese. Normally a wonderful thing beloved of many. The most unlikely villain in the whole of Star Trek.
And it gave such a cheesy performance.

Time for TNG to leave the table. Time's Arrow is a favorite episode of mine, including its time-mangling Devidian baddies.

I can think of two right now. One is really done and the other is more evolutionary than revolutionary and the only way they could go...

Species 8472 (VOY S3, "Scorpion")

So when the Borg are too big to kill off, until later episodes when you throw out everything that made them big and turn them into generic baddies with ships no longer decentralized in design beyond their basic geometric shape visage, you do the opposite thing: Make a bigger big bad to compensate for when the big bad was de-bigged. Like the Guardians in Doctor Who replacing the Time Lords as the biggies because season 14 reduced them completely to a bunch of senile nitwits... but back to some people on some kind of Star Trek:

The Borg bit off more than they can chew, in a universe external to ours, which is fluidic space. So instead of a big venue of hydrogen and planets and things on planets producing methane, we now have - next door - a big venue of liquid or pus or whatever that goo is, which Species 8472 seems to do just fine without because their home planet somehow separated the fluid universe from themse-- oh piffle, I'm not going to try to think about this anymore, they're a big bad designed to be bigger than the big bad debigged by debagging.

Point is, the Borg are having problems and, lo and behold, here comes the puny human ship with people and technology on board of the sort that they had assimilated long ago, complete with some of the blueprints and schematics for what became the "current tech" that Voyager has. Somehow, the puny humans can find a way around the problem that the Borg and their great gestalt can't.

And, yup, "Scorpion" is a first rate story, one that even ditched the idea of the Queen... for now, anyway. 8472 is an interesting species and the moralplay is fantastic. On multiple levels. That said, the story still feels more evolutionary than doing anything new... but that would change, thanks to the character of Seven and a slew of plot ideas that would come about. But that's another story.

The Loom are probably one of the scariest villains in Star Trek. Transdimensional, feeding on individuals and erasing them from history, eating entire time lines. They look scary and sound scary.

Although the Pah Wraiths effectively neutered Dukat, and I I still like the way they entered the fray in Tears of the Prophets.

I mean yes, I'd have liked for Jadzia to have died in a different way, or had just been transferred. But her death, alongside the Wraith entering the wormhole and closing it, was a wonderfully dark cliffhanger.

Sisko even took his baseball with this ending.

May as well save the other.

Borg Queen (VOY S6 & S7, "Unimatrix Zero" and "Endgame" & PIC S3 "The Last Generation")

Both actresses really manage to make a non sequitur of a character far more than the sum of its parts, which is an impressive feat. The makers knew that the character might be contentious but knew how to make her work despite it all.

Also, despite some canonical dialogue regarding her in STFC that has a rushed feel to it, I'm sticking by my headcanon that the Queen was created by the Collective gestalt after the failure of Locutus leading to the destruction of a Cube (as Locutus was created as an evolutionary extension due to their having grown so big, or they were into pomp and circumstance, or something), and how - in subsequent VOY stories where we see species assimilated - there's no mention of any representative being kidnapped and assimilated prior to, in order to facilitate the rest of the species. It fits the "evolutionary" route that the Borg were taking during 80s/90s Trek too.

Or, if she did reside on the Locutus Cube and can do 5D teleportation or whatever she was hinting at in the film, she's able to change her appearance at will as well, as easily as we'd change shirts every day. I guess.

Of the three aforementioned stories, the Queen is used best by far in "Endgame", with "The Last Generation" as runner-up.

I just wonder what might happen if the Collective decided that the Queen was a dumb idea and how they'd go back to being a unified will. Which brings us to the next episode, where Riker is assimilated...

The Dominion was so bad, their idea of First Contact involved mass murder, announced by Talak'talan. Yikes.
