Game The Most Disliked Romance-Of-The-Week Episode

There are probably some better made, higher concept, more thoughtful episodes, but for the sheer joy and entertainment of its odd couple pairing, I'm going to save ENT: "Precious Cargo". Trip's utter exasperation, Kaitaama's matter-of-fact sense of entitlement, and their confinement in that ridiculously tiny escape pod are a great combination. Plus, elsewhere in the episode, T'Pol puts on a sublime show as 'Judge, Jury and Executioner'!
Oh, and Trip in his underwear (again!) is not to be sniffed at :adore::devil:

Wow, I was sure that was going to "win" this competition.

The Conscience of the King is one of the greatest original series episodes, although not necessarily for the "romance" between the 19-year-old homicidal girl and the 33-year-old Starfleet Captain. I think we're just seeing some of the interactions from her point-of-view.

- In a different time, "Precious Cargo" might have 'won', but in part due to the state of the world (and not just this virus situation), I'm looking more and more for happiness, positivity, lightness, and fluff - an escape from the doom and gloom. I don't want serious, or gritty, or grimdark - I want joy, and ridiculousness, and fun :rommie::bolian::D

I was expecting "PRECIOUS CARGO" to 'win', as well.

You make a very valid, and interesting, point in your reasoning. This is why these kind of games, at least for the series ones, are done every couple years.

A lot can happen in our lives, and the world, in such a short time that it can color or change our view of episodes from before.

(I personally find certain episodes better than before, and others have more forgiving elements. Very few end up being worse than before.)

I applaud you for your choice.

This story made its mark all over the place and was a mess to clean up... doesn't stop me from entirely hating it, and - indeed - there's some stuff to appreciate (mostly the feel of the episode for its use of suspense and horror).

TOS, Season 3: "The Mark Of Gideon"

Backstory over narrative flow prevailing, this one couldn't find a sledgehammer big enough, or enough or enough experienced co-writers to smooth the narrative considerably. And half a dozen sledgehammers, rather...

Worse, the episode is half-a-step away from saying "We need to kidnap Kirk to get busy with the women since he's a carrier of a disease lethal to us." (but thankfully nobody else in the galaxy, or they're all dead by now... ain't standalone episodic television grand? :alienblush:) One scene introduces blood as a requisite detail, but otherwise one has to wonder just how far this story would have gone, even if season 3 was forgotten by the suits and the censors wouldn't care as much. But as allegory goes, the episode is sorta trying to nudge over Kirk being everywhere may have given him his ailment.

And the target audience would see through the coordinates' transposition right off the bat. Even for 1960s television, this was weak.

The story really is about Hodin and his love of his people and wanting to end their endless agony, even if the situation is not just warped but contrived to an impossible level. Maybe that's where Doctor Who came from; not Gallifrey but some unknown planet and the Enterprise was just in another universe for a while. There's that crossover everyone wanted to love, just it's not with Tom Baker's incarnation with Picard.

It's also an unintentional allegory discussing carriers of diseases and how they can potentially impact entire populations if left to run rampant. Like HIV except carriers that don't die from it or its complications seem to be far fewer...

That and the horror element, prior to the reveal that the whole ship, with blinky lights and noises and vibrations and everything, could be replicated so perfectly and to scale, was actually quite effective. But the reveal spoils it all. Where did Gideon get the blueprints and schematics from? It's a plot hole and the story doesn't need any more than a fan filling in the blanks (Klingon or Romulan espionage, evil Admiral of the week(tm), they telepathically thunk it all from that great distance... got it when Kirk was on the planet way back when or however the Gideons figured it out.

Oh, the Gideons have no need for doctors but the cooties Kirk is unwillingly bestowing would ultimately kill them all.

On the flip side, while too simplistic to be believed, constant organ regeneration - how many stomachs do they go through in a year if they're all constantly starving to death? As high concept horror, this episode DOES have a few moments, but that underlying cause still ranks right up there with unicorns peeing rainbows from afar and what's in that pot may look like gold, but... (which is why you never get to it to see that illuision.)

And Ben/Krodak/Egghead would return with a bit more authority and being a goodie in "11001001", one of TNG's better entries...

My first post, after being a lurky turkey for many years! These games are fun. I have to save DS9’s “Emissary”. I think it’s maybe a bit of a stretch to consider it a ‘romance of the week’, so its inclusion is a bit surprising, but I think it’s by far the strongest episode on this otherwise fairly grim list and Trek’s greatest pilot post-TOS.
WELCOME! :bolian::bolian::beer: When this list was first being run as a "Least Disliked" game last year, it didn't originally have "Emissary", someone suggested it and there was an extended controversial discussion as to whether it qualified. I became convinced it belonged because it did tell the full story of the Jennifer/Sisko relationship in a single episode, and there were other eps on the list that told the stories of long relationships in one ep, via various sci-fi means. And my other rationale was it's also a ROTW for the Jennifer Prophet who's incarnating it. Since the Prophets are outside of time, all experiences of romance for them are romances of the week, the month, the year, the second... :bolian:

Oh, and Trip in his underwear (again!) is not to be sniffed at :adore::devil:
During original air, "Precious Cargo" is the episode I gave up on Enterprise, and the decisive moment was during that ending, when I thought "Trip is wrestling in wet underwear, and even THAT'S not holding my attention!" If knew if that wasn't going to get me, nothing would! Though...

...THIS is the whole logic by which I've come to love Voyager in recent years. Back in the day, I didn't like that it had such a dark premise, but was a light show.

These days, a show with a very dark premise where the characters nevertheless manage to be upbeat and cheerful, to a degree that is almost delusional, seems like JUST the ticket.

As for my next elimination, I'll go with "Resurrection." It's another good way to get a ROTW up-and-running quick, going to the alternate universe double of a recurring relationship that had already been developed. You see how Kira could fall into it fast, even though technically she just met this man.

I did kind of like Bareil back in the day, too. Not really sure why anymore, but at the time I was excited to see him again!

Thanks Sakonna  Upon reflection, I can see why it was included as it is at heart a story of love, loss and healing, and quite a moving one too. I’m looking forward to rewatching it and the rest of DS9 again soon!

Before I head to bed, I have to save “The Paradise Syndrome”. It’s one of a small number of TOS S3 episodes I actually quite enjoy. It’s not without problems admittedly, but there’s a certain sweetness and innocence about it, plus some beautiful location work, a nice score and interestingly it’s one of the few times we see Kirk genuinely falling in love. Shatner’s performance is both affecting and gloriously hammy ... “I AM KIIIIIROKKK!”

There are three that warm on me for various above and beyond, but for now I'll just be a pig:

TOS, Season 3: "Elaan Of Troyius"

It's another story of a greater love that's being upended by something bigger and this time the something bigger, formed from a greater love, may be upended too.

Okay, if the Doleman's tears can drive a mate insane and passive to be subjugated, there'd be no story if all she needed to do was to cry in front of her Troyiun hubby-to-be. She even states he cannot resist her, though the love of his ship ends up being stronger anyway. This episode really is about love in all the wrong places

Which reminds, how come we don't get to see a "Meanwhile on Troyius, the hubby-to-be is whining too..." subplot? Partly because 60s Trek was more about the action and how the Klingons were paying off Kryten* to sabotage Enterprise with in order to start a war because he and his delicious gams, pecs, puffy big hairdo, and other big parts got all jealous because Doleman had to marry someone else and for nothing important such as for the sake of two entire civilizations and all...

* absolutely zero relation to everyone's favorite Mechanoid aboard the JMC vessel Red Dwarf!

The other cool plot twist is, the Federation knew nothing of Elaas being loaded with sweet, delicious Dilithium before all this happened. Proof that 23rd century humans are still human.

Lastly, France Nuyen (at the time the wife of actor Robert Culp, co-star of the hit TV show "I Spy", which was the first TV show to have a co-lead black character of equal importance), as well as Dr Shrinker himself - Jay Robinson, both make this episode quite enjoyable with impeccable performances. Icing on the cake, on top of the rest of the cast who also keep it going by playing it with complete sincerity. Which is harder to do in sci-fi as there aren't as many reference points, but I digress - the plot is iffy at times but the acting remains alluring and... I love it.

That was going to be my next one! :) There is an innocence to it, it is well-acted, great location work, the ending - atypical for Trek - works in part because it is so atypical. Especially for TOS.

FWIW today is Sharon Acker’s (Odona) birthday.

And I think I've just reached the point where every save going forward has a disclaimer. I think I'll save "Second Sight" next, the back half of which I DO NOT LIKE, but the first half I find quite pleasantly atmospheric and involving. It's a great, beguiling Mystery Woman setup they spin here... until the answers to all the mysteries are lousy.

Most of these don't have a lot to recommend them, but I'll give "Loud as a Whisper" credit for at least a clever concept, with a deaf negotiator who communicates through a telepathic chorus. The idea was intriguing and alien, and the sincerity of the performers was obvious.

"A SIMPLE INVESTIGATION" is next for me. Not a great episode, but not bad either. My biggest issue stems from the timing it was produced and aired... this should have been done when he was a solid. At least we get to see who created that spiced pudding Bashir is so fond of.

I'll save Prime Factors. It's a strong episode, showing the VOY crew getting desperate to try and get home. I do like that the Silkarians have a Prime Directive much like Starffleet. I love that Tuvok is the one who makes the bold decision to acquire the technology on the black market, with appropriate Janeway scoldings by the end. Mulgrew was always wonderful at the putdowns.

As for the ROTW, it wasn't a huge part of the episode from what I remember, but it was amiable and inoffensive. Compared to some other episodes left below, with strange plots and/or lack of chemistry with the couple involved, amiable is high praise. ;)

I'll save "Real Life." The problem with this one is that the ship-jeopardy B plot may be the most boring, pointless, insubstantial nothing of a ship-jeopardy B plot across the entirety of Berman Trek. And there were MANY such B stories, and they mostly sucked, so that's saying something!

I forgot the Vulcan "forget pinch" was created for this.

TOS, Season 3: "Requiem For Methuselah"

The presentation and first-time shock revelation actually work fairly well, especially if you've not been a fan of 1950s sci-fi flicks. There is a sense of mystery and later sympathy that work.

Or don't not work.

Until reading into the story. The story boils down to some "dirty old man building a robot of the sort like what's being done nowadays in some countries" combined with "get the crew their ritalin but don't pronounce it like the ADD drug so we'll spell it 'rytalyn' in the script" with "computer self-destructs at the end because Kirk is in the room". Though science has yet to explain why libido lasts longer for men.

Fun note: Rayna Kapec's surname is a partial anagram of Karel's surname Capek, the dude who invented the word "robot".

Regarding "REAL LIFE", I've always loved the dialogue between Paris and The Doctor at the end. He certainly grew from the pilot, and this was the best evidence of that.

Saving "IN THE FLESH" next. Chakotay and 'Valerie Archer' really had some good chemistry, and the briefing room scene was quite tense.

"The Outcast" meant something to me when I was younger, for speaking to issues about gender, sexuality, and acceptance. Looking back I can see that, even for its time, its approach was not very bold, but still....

Literally the only episode of Trek I ever sent a fan letter for.

I really have to save “Doctor Bashir, I Presume” because I feel it’s the strongest episode on the list.

The romance aspect, Rom/Leeta getting together, is admittedly the worst part of the episode — pure sitcom cheese and almost seems intentionally annoying, but like much of DS9’s comedy, it’s still fun enough if you put the brain into neutral.

The main plot is where the meaty stuff is, and it’s an excellent character piece for Bashir. It’s amazing that such a massive character revelation comes this late in the series but it actually makes a great deal of sense and helps explain and contextualise so many things about the character that rankled or didn’t quite make sense earlier in the run. It definitely made the character far rounder. Also, it’s a delight to have Robert Picardo on DS9 (for my money he was always the best thing about Voyager). Some of the hologram scenes were hilarious too.
