Game The Most Disliked Episode From THR's 100 Greatest Star Trek Episodes, 2025 Edition

THE OBJECTIVE: A sudden-death elimination game in which we remove our personal favorite episodes/movies from a themed list, until we arrive at the episode that is, if not the worst, at least the most disliked.

It's a framework to say positive things about episodes from across the franchise.

THE RULES: Below is a list The Hollywood Reporter ran a few years ago, the 100 greatest episodes from the first 6 series (this was before Streaming Trek). I've seen a lot of "Best Trek Episodes" lists over the years, but this one always struck me as the most well curated. The selection of episodes communicates such an interesting point of view on the franchise. It includes all the recognized greats, but also many less obvious highlights.

(episodes are listed exactly as they were by THR, so there's some peculiarities, like the 6-episodes of the Occupation Arc being one item, "Improbable Cause" being listed as it's own item though every other-two parter lists both parts, etc)

Eliminate/save your favorite, or the one you deem the ‘best' of what currently remains.
Post something you enjoy about the episode you are saving, and copy-and-paste the list with your choice removed.

You can use any standard you like to judge which option is "best." You can save episodes for being widely recognized “best Trek” classics, or for idiosyncratic qualities that no one appreciates but you.

As you get down the list, you might have to reach more and more for something to enjoy about an episode, and it's OK to eventually save episodes for being "less bad."

But -- no tactical voting! You cannot remove an episode because you don’t think anyone else will, or because you feel it would threaten your preferred episode's chance to “win.”

You can take multiple turns.

I'm actually going to start with the bottom and save an episode I have absolutely rewatched to death -- "Conspiracy." The first and last acts especially are some of the most viscerally memorable Trek material I've ever seen. This episode transports me right back to childhood like few others can. Such a nostalgia rush.

So many good'uns in with some trash that I hope wins, but I Khaaaaaaaaaaan start out by saving:

There's nothing dislikable about this one, save for some obvious stunt doubles, but it was the swingin' sixties. No worries, as I type this up I'll remember more to fling at it...

I love how Khan is quick to assume how technology has advanced but the human mind had not. Indeed, given how a lot of the bridge crew salivate in a briefing room meeting leans toward this...

I love how quick Kirk says "Welcome aboard, stranger from a savage past, here's our entire library of how the ship works. Have fun!"

There's also a contrasting style -- Khan's desire of McGivers almost feels like she's being used as a steppingstone to conquer the ship with (then do what with it and go where and for how long, oh well), though a deleted scene solidifies that he isn't. Meanwhile, Kirk too spews out some cynical rubbish about putting that useless Mick Givers person to use:

KIRK: I'm not. Oh, I'll need somebody familiar with the late 20th-Century Earth. Here's a chance for that historian to do something for a change. What's her name? McIvers?​
SPOCK: Lieutenant McGivers.​

Then again, how many people versed in each century need to be on a cramped starship? Imagine Kirk with, "Yo, get me Fitzgerald, our 22nd century specialist as this week we stumbled on another sleeper ship. Ditto for Jefferson as next week we'll find yet another ship only it's from the 19th century. Either way, audiences have no direct reference point." Good grief. Still, the deliberate mispronunciation based on his apparent disdain for having generally-unneeded people unless the script calls for it aboard is almost fourth wall. (Actually, Kirk is really tight-underweared in season 1 and mellows a lot by season 2 and 3, into the truly iconic character.)

What's far more annoying is how Khan really wants the ship. But he'll just blow it up because he's tired of being a smartypants and now wants to be a poopypants. "Your ship flares up like an exploding sun within minutes", Khan relishes saying. Erm, why? Well, we need the obligatory stunt double scene.

But why is this the first save? There's enough dialogue covering The Human Condition that's great, and Ricardo Montalban steals the show. Plus, imagine Star Trek II with, say, the newly spacefaring Platonians out to get Kirk instead?

But

KHAN: My vessel was useless. I need you and yours to select a colony planet. One with a population willing to be led by us.​
MCCOY: To be conquered by you. A starship would make that most simple, wouldn't it?​

Which colony, is it a Federation colony? You know they'd be calling up someone and not for pizza in thirty minutes. Khan is surprisingly shortsighted, or it's a reminder that he too is still human inside. It's a nice bit of unspoonfed plotting right there. Or the scripting was crap, but I don't think that's the real reason.

((ON EDIT: I forgot to add: When Khan says, "willing to led by us", that one raises a whole slew of fun questions - but it does wordlessly tie into the bridge crew's admiration of Khan as it hints at far more than just whips and threats that have nothing to do with BDSM. With so many possible facets that all fit into the episode's established dialogue, it's all left for the viewer to decide.))

So back to the good acting:

KHAN: If I understood your manuals, that's an overload in progress. Your ship flares up like an exploding sun within minutes​

Not only does Ricardo relish it, he onions, ketchups, and mustards it too. Yum! He just doesn't cheese or ham it, thankfully.

59. “Yesteryear”, TAS Season 1

I have other episodes that I like better, but I also think those will be saved / not eliminated. Sorry, Where No Man Has Gone Before. This isn't even my favorite TAS episode but One of Our Planets is Missing isn't on the list. And I don't like The Infinite Vulcan very much.

Anyway. I love this episode. Everyone loves this episode. Even people who don't like TAS like this episode.

At its center it is a solid story and engages well with its young protagonist. (The only episode of TAS that is actually about a kid.) Obviously the story about Spock's boyhood struggles and the loss of I-Chaya is compelling and you'd have to have a heart stonier than a Vulcan to not be moved.

Then you have the fact that it has Mark Lenard as a guest star. (And Majel Barrett as Amanda is not bad either.) It's one of the key roles that makes this feel like "real" Star Trek. I LOVE Sarek's outfit in this episode. He's just a towering presence. (The less said about James Doohan's Guardian the better.)

It's not a bad revisit to the Guardian of Forever. Does it line up perfectly with City on the Edge of Forever? No. Do the time travel mechanics make any sense? No. Neither did Tomorrow is Yesterday, also by Fontana. But it's nice to see it anyway.

Oh, right. This is a Dorothy Fontana Star Trek story set on Vulcan. That alone, what more could you ask?

And finally the reason why this is on my list: This episode makes me feel like I have been to Vulcan. This is the measuring stick by which I judge all Vulcan stories and settings (including Amok Time). Most are found wanting, IMHO. (I should probably watch the ENT Vulcan episodes.) To me, the only thing in the running is the novel Spock's World by Diane Duane. It feels like a PLACE. It feels advanced and savage at the same time. It feels hot and oppressive but (almost) tamed.

"The Measure of a Man" is ranked far too low at #31. It proved that TNG could be great Trek and great television. Patrick Stewart was stunning in his impassioned defense, Jonathan Frakes played Riker's conflicts perfectly, and Brent Spiner, as so often, was the perfect blend of innocence and underplayed strength. Amanda McBroom was a strong guest star as Phillipa Louvois, who came across as both a believable ex for Picard and an ambitious and intelligent jurist. And Whoopi Goldberg's Guinan powerfully underlined the stakes of the episode.

There couldn't ever have been any real question as to how the central conflict would resolve, but it was so well-played it was easy to forget that while watching. Peak TNG, peak TV.

"The Visitor" is a top DS9 for me. I think I've cried every single time I watched it, and that was a lot of times. Everyone acts the hell out of this one.

I'm glad that both of my absolute favorite TOS episodes are here. So I'll save the one that came first... "BALANCE OF TERROR".

Pretty damn flawless episode. Great introduction of the Romulans, great tension, great story, great drama, and a wonderfully acted ending by Shatner using just his walk to convey exactly what he's going through... starts off in silent sadness of losing a crewman and then with each step forward, he steels himself more and more until he moves to his regular stride, knowing he must keep up confidence for his crew.

This episode also proves that even taking a movie or other episode as a basis, you can still make a GREAT version of it with the right ingredients... story, characters, performances.

“Scorpion, Parts I & II”, VOY Seasons 3 & 4. I love that they introduced what I think is one of the best (if not most loved) characters in Star Trek, Seven of Nine. In my rewatch of ST: Picard I have come to realize what a deep well of feelings she has always been, full of trauma and still struggling with her humanity. And just a lovely acting job by Jeri.

When Benjamin is disillusioned and worn out with the fight against the Dominion, he steps through the looking glass, and through his experience of the even more uphill battle Benny had to fight, gets renewed inspiration that the fight ultimately is worth it. Also an episode that breaks the fourth wall with the direct correspondence with real world issues - (albeit set in the past it still exists) and its uncertainty about who is the dreamer and the dreamt one.

The power of memory is explored, and without the need of a Huey Lewis song to accompany it. Sci-fi usually pokes at archaeologists misinterpreting an artifact (in a warming, not spiteful way), but never anything along these lines.

Treknobabble is deftly used, so it's fairly easy to buy into the EMH - who gets a lot of plot meat for once and not parroting Dr McCoy memes.

Plus, the crew all get to play baddies. Yup, Trek stopped going to the dry well of "muh parallel world" or "controlled by space fritter" or "drugged up by the locals" and actually did something NEW to let actors be eeeeeeeeeeeevil and it's so refreshing.

History, like a book, is just flat information and data. The flavor of the time to add context remains missing, unless it is told meticulously. There's invariably a missing piece, and any outsider looking in might be both baffled and impressed.

Pretty much flawless. Excellent script, story, acting, tension... this episode has EVERYTHING!

William Windom put in one of THE best guest performances of TOS and the franchise itself. Absolutely superb!

The episode was a pattern for a fleet... well, a fleet of copycat episodes, even if "The Immunity Syndrome" is not without uniqueness or charm despite being the only copycat I can think of but I digress: It's another simple story, but makes well use of its action themes. The TOS-R CGI complements the story as much as it compliments it, but the original still works wonders on its own.

The story, a retelling of "Moby Dick", speaks for itself in this episode, only of a galactic scale that - unlike a certain Lazarus eppy - actually works. Technobabble isn't overdone or nonsensical, great acting, balances action and emotional tones, and the threat to the galaxy is clear if this thing were to warp itself to the next system.

Apparently William Windom wasn't happy with his performance, but he nails it 100%.

An absolute classic.

VOY really made the Borg credible again and without bringing back the Queen (for now). While working with the Borg can be questionable, it's not bad just because, and it also opens up another purpose for VOY to utilize: Exploring the recovery from the Collective (a cult-like gestalt), and Seven is given so much material after this story that's truly great. Ably acted with aplomb by Jeri Ryan as well, nobody knew at the time that she and Kate Mulgrew were not on good terms. A shame, as the Janeway/Seven double-act is far stronger than the Picard/Data one. If anything, I wish they explored the ramifications of working with them more.

I've a couple of thoughts on that:

There are a lot of slick episodes, some saved, some not. This one really is, in part due to how it is so different - if not by happenstance, if for no other reason.

We have a baddie, out of nowhere, that kills, out of nowhere, for a cheap thrill, then realizes it wants more - unless it claimed its first kill was too easy was an additional wind-up. Regardless, it's a genuine shock. This really ratches up the tension in an episode, in a season that often lacked this style of danger, and Armus really lays out some nastiness because... _he's bored_. Amazed Yar didn't tell him to take a long walk on a short plank and that's _a board_ as well as being boring wordplay.

Armus is a genuinely alien creation, on so many levels, and not just being non-humanoid - a rarity in Trekdom.

Including how it's defeated. Even the use of Wesley isn't anything as brash as in so many preceding episodes.

Okay, I'm done being nice. Time to be snarky again:

Naturally, Yar always ego'cliques it up by refreshing her "toodlypipsky" death speech every time she's reassigned to another ship so she can reference all her bridge buddies and, what luck, on the 1701-D she had yet to re-record because of everyone else being promoted or killed because she wasn't on the trip or made an oopsie. Actually, all that tangential non sequitur makes slightly less nonsense when you think about it, because a security chief position is generally very dangerous - unless you're in the opening credits list, of course. So it's not as terrible as all that, oddly. You weren't expecting to read that reverse negative before the double-negative either, were you? :devil:
