"The Phage"
The Vidiians are interesting, though hideous looking. I feel bad for them that they need to harvest organs in order to survive. I also feel bad for them that their faces look like they have bacon on them. At least it was nice of one of them to modify one of Kes' lungs for Neelix.
Neelix's Neelix-ish-ness was amped up to 11 at the beginning of the episode. At a few points I thought to myself, "Can he please be quiet for at least two seconds?" I feel bad for him that the Vidiians harvested his lungs, but I also felt bad for the Doctor when he faced the prospect of Neelix being stuck in Sickbay for life.
It would've been nice if Neelix had consulted Janeway before during her dining area into Voyager's version of Ten Forward. But at the same time, I have to ask: Why would Janeway have such a large private dining space on an Intrepid Class Starship? I can't even imagine Picard having such a large dining private space of his own on a Galaxy Class Starship.
This is the first episode where Kes expresses an interst in studying medicine. It's also the first episode where Neelix becomes paranoid about Paris swooping in and taking Kes from him.
I got a kick out of one scene where Neelix asked the Doctor if he sings, and The Doctor gives him an angry, annoyed glare. If only they knew what was coming later...
Holographic lungs were an interesting concept. Though if Ocampan physiology is less complex than Talaxian, the first thing I'd think of if I were Kes is, "Can you create an artificial
second lung for me?" If only to increase the lung capacity.
Overall,
I give this episode a 7.
