Re-Watching DS9

"Distant Voices"

If there was ever a "middle of the season" episode, it's this one. Bashir turns 30 and he says, "30 marks the end of youth and the slow march into middle-age." I'm not going to fault Bashir here, I felt the same way, but... trust me Doctor: it's not 30 you have to look out for, it's 40! Now this is the part where someone tells me "It's not 40 you have to look out for, it's 50!" ;)

Anyway, a Lithian attacks Bashir and enters his mind, Bashir is unconscious for nearly the rest of the episode and everything we see is in his mind. All the different characters on DS9 represent different facets of Bashir's personality. It reminds me of a show from the early-'90s called Herman's Head. Anyone remember that show? The only one who doesn't remind Bashir of any part of his personality is Garak, who turns out to be a representation of the Lithian.

The best part of the episode is when the Lithian asks Bashir the probing questions. Why didn't he pursue a career in Tennis? Why didn't he pursue Jadzia as a girlfriend? Why wasn't he Valedictorian? Bashir hits back with answers for all of those once he's in his own turf: The Infirmary, then he vanquishes the Lithian from his mind.

Seeing Bashir get older and older and older and older was crazy to see. The "Happy Birthday" followed by the "and many more!" was twisted. And yeah. That's what old really looks like. Down to the hip-breaking. "After experiencing life at a 100-plus, turning 30 doesn't seem so bad anymore!" See? Lesson learned!

There were a few highlights, like what I mentioned above, but for the most part it was killing time and there was more than one instance where my mind started wandering. I give it a 6.

.

.
.

When I turned 30, it felt like a milestone, but I celebrated it. Just like I want to turn every decade-turning birthday into a celebration. No dread, worry, or fear here.

Here's what I did for every birthday ending in zero:

10 --> I went to see Honey, I Shrunk the Kid in the theater!

20 --> I didn't actually do anything. To be fair, 20 is overshadowed by 18 and 21. When I turned 18, I went hiking in New Hampshire. I forget which mountain. But, at one point, we ended up in the clouds. It was that high. When I turned 21, I went to a bar. Though, when I got up, the first thing I did was buy a beer at the store. Only because I could. In retrospect, I'd say 18 was the better birthday.

30 --> When I was a kid, I went to a restaurant called Top of the Hub. It was in Boston and it had a restaurant at the top of a skyscraper on the 52nd Floor. The elevator ride was something else. For my 30th Birthday, I wanted to go back there. Only I found out the restaurant was no longer open. But, what was open was a place on the 50th Floor where I could view the entire cityscape through binoculars. It was interesting. Not quite what I planned but it still worked out.

40 --> Since I was hitting my 40s, I decided to make my birthday party 1940s-themed! I played '40s music on my computer, we watched '40s cartoons, some '40s news reels, and then, for the Feature Presentation, we watched The Maltese Falcon.

I also use "DISTANT VOICES" as an example of a clue to Bashir's genetic enhancement. At the end, Bashir said Lethean telepathic attacks are almost always fatal. (I don't count Kor because he was specifically looking for information... Altovar was trying to kill Bashir for catching him stealing.)

And despite the Lethean in his head saying stuff, Bashir could easily have had the more private stuff like his enhancements tucked away in a corner where the Headthean can't see it.

I liked it, but I agree it's more a 6.

I remember Herman's Head! I watched it regularly until it switched times or something and I lost track of it. :| Did it even get a proper ending?

I can't remember, but it lasted only three seasons, and it was on FOX... So those two things tell me it didn't.

I just watched B5's "Spider in the Web". How do I put this? I've never seen something like this before. I give most of the episode a 7. But then there are those last few minutes. It shot all the way up to a solid 10. I almost feel like I have to give this episode two separate ratings.

They reveal Bureau 13. A secret organization who Sheridan can't prove exists. And Talia has images of someone who works for them. Complete with that eerie music. I refuse to believe there's no coincidence between B5 having Bureau 13 and DS9 having Section 31. Come on!

To add on top of that, I see the screen pic for the next episode and Bester's in it. "Spider in the Web" reinforces how loyal Talia is to Psi Corps and she even talks about her childhood memories of it and how she was raised by them. I refuse to believe there's not going to be a direct connection between "Spider in the Web" and "A Race Through Dark Places".

I should do a proper review first. After that, I should get through the next DS9 and VOY episodes in my rotation. But I don't care. I'm putting on "A Race Through Dark Places"! Now. The reviews and what else I'm watching can wait. I have to see what happens next!

I didn't mind turning 30. That was still young to me. I didn't mind turning 40. That was still young to me. Turning 50 gave me some pause. Now I'm staring 60 in the face. THAT will make me need a stiff drink.
I definitely wouldn't go back to younger than 30 if I had the choice. Self supporting, done with school, and no longer needing housemates in order to make ends meet.

Oh, you're skipping Soul Mates for now and going straight to Race Through Dark Places? I was going to try to talk you into doing that for continuity reasons, but I didn't think I'd have much success.

I actually think Section 31 was a coincidence, because conspiracies and shady spy organisations with a number in their name were popular tropes in the '90s. In fact, Bureau 13 was already the title of a tabletop game and when the Babylon 5 producers found out they dropped the name immediately.

I went all the way up to "The Coming of Shadows".

I couldn't help myself. But I'll still review them individually and in rotation as I normally do.

Life is taking up more of my time than it used to, so I'm going to have to make some cuts. Since this is TrekBBS, and Trek is the first priority, I'm not alternating between DS9 and B5 anymore. I'll only be covering individual episodes of DS9 in this thread.

I'm still going to watch B5, but it's going to be in binge fashion. Not one episode at a time, writing reviews for it. I'll still let you know what I think when I get to the end of each season, but this will allow me to get through DS9 faster. I don't want this to take forever.

"Through the Looking Glass"

DS9's second Mirror Universe episode. While I appreciated that "Crossover" had characters from DS9 crossover into the Mirror Universe, I'm glad that this time it was Sisko. Sisko the character is a pretty good actor. This is the second time he's had to pretend to be someone else. First Gabriel Bell and now Mirror Sisko. Also interesting is that in the Mirror Universe it's Sisko who's dead and not Jennifer.

I got a kick out of seeing Dax as a mistress and Bashir as macho and aggressive. Dax and Bashir both have different hairstyles, and I think it adds to the differences. Sisko has to hit Bashir. A they didn't show it but I'm guessing Sisko and Dax might've gotten it on, off-camera. Seeing Tuvok here was great. In 1995, this was the last place I ever thought I'd see a crossover between DS9 and VOY, but the Mirror Universe is one of the only opportunities where it makes sense.

On Terok Nor, they keep the same dark-but-neon-lit look from before, but there are more standard camera shots this time and fewer low-angles.

Garak is still a thug with no imagination. All he wants to do is kill Sisko.

The Intendent is still sex-crazed and looking for any excuse to keep Sisko alive because she loves him too much as a plaything to kill him. It's her Achille's Heel.

Jennifer slowly realizes that this Sisko isn't her Sisko, and I like seeing how she slowly realizes this through his actions. It's not something that happens immediately. At the end, when Jennifer finally asks Sisko what happened to her Sisko. You can tell that Sisko just wants to get out of there because being with Jennifer -- even this Jennifer -- is too much for him.

The only two people who are exactly the same in both universes are O'Brien and Tuvok. All that's changed are their circumstances. And, in this case, Tuvok is part of a resistance for real instead of only pretending to be.

Just like the Maquis use the Badlands to hide in the Regular Universe, I like that the Terran Resistance uses the Badlands to hide in the Mirror Universe.

At the beginning of the season, when "Nacheyev" tempted Sisko with a promotion to Captain, it felt weird. But the idea was planted in our heads. Here, when everyone in the Mirror Universe calls Sisko "Captain", it sounds so natural. And this is the second time the idea's planted in our heads, setting up for the end of the season when Sisko finally actually is promoted to Captain for real. He commands a station, he commands a ship, he's been in command for almost three years... he deserves to be Captain.

Overall, I give this episode a 9.

This is disappointing, but I'm not really in a position to complain considering I did the same thing myself on my own simultaneous DS9/B5 rewatch. Only in my case, B5 was the show I continued to review, and I stopped writing about DS9 10 episodes into season 2.

I'm not saying that Sanctuary was so bad it made me quit, but it certainly didn't compel me to continue.

Well, I changed my mind. I'm going to keep alternating between DS9 and B5 (and VOY) after all. It'll take longer than I thought, but it'll take longer than I thought no matter what anyway.

i just have to find a balance between life, work, my films, other stuff I'm watching, and this.

It's been over a week. Life has been super-busy. But, even with all kinds of ups-and-downs, the show must go on. So, as much as I've been dreading it, I'm putting on...

"Improbable Cause" & "The Die Is Cast"

"You've been dreading this?!" I'm afraid so. Garak blowing up his own shop was bad enough. You could just say he's sick of being a tailor. But then to actually want to get back into Enabran Tain's good graces? What the Hell is that? Why would he want to make himself subordinate to anyone? Let alone someone who tried to have him killed? Pretty ridiculous, if you ask me.

That's not all. The Romulans are NEVER one to make the first move. Yet here they are with the Cardassians about to make a BIG FAT First Move against the Dominion. Nope. Not buying it. It goes totally against everything we know about the Romulans. All the DS9 writers at this point started off on TNG, so they should've known better.

And, of course, this episode begins a string of dominoes that completely destabilizes the Alpha Quadrant. The Romulans and Cardassians weakened. Planting seeds to turn Federation/Klingon relations back 80 years. If I want to see politics turned back 80 years, I'll just watch the fucking news!

Then, of course, the music. Normally I don't comment on music from '90s Trek. What's the point? At least not on TV. But this time I have to. Like I said, they can't come up with any good music. So, what do they do? Act like the hacks they are and recycle music from Generations! At least they're not recycling battle scenes yet. That's another rant for another time.

I'm thoroughly disappointed with both of these episodes. I don't even want to talk about them anymore. Overall, summing up, I give them a 2.

Better than "Threshold", but that's it. I know I'm going to get flack for this review. But, before you do, I have one more thing to say...

April Fools!

I'll have the real review up sometime this week. :D

I think that every one of us can name a few universally acclaimed and beloved episodes that they personally just don't like. I've seen people online getting criticised for giving popular episodes a low rating, as if the stories have an objective level of quality that should be obvious to anyone with any taste or intelligence, but that's just not true. Even if it was true, our perception of an episode is a translation created by our minds using our experiences and biases as a reference, so we're all getting something different out of it.

So I'm not mad at you for being that one viewer in a million that couldn't enjoy these episodes, far from it. But I am disappointed.

Disappointed that it took me a second to remember what day it was.
