Excelsior Impulse Engines

Can someone direct me to a site that has pictures of the Excelsior's impulse engines in use or can someone post pictures? Somrthing's bothering me about them and I can't figure it out!

Well, this is a classic:

Of course, the majority of Excelsior appearances are from front angles. Another classic view, from the TNG Season 2 opener (often repeated as a stock shot):

Even here, the nacelles conveniently block our view of the engines, so we can't tell whether they would have been lit or not. I don't think we ever see the engines in TNG. The same goes for VOY "Flashback": it's all forward angles.

This shot from ST:GEN concurs with the classic from ST6:TUC:

As for DS9 appearances, I'm sure I have missed some key references. Here's one, anyway:

The red slits seem like a consistent standard feature, while the tiny blue domes are never lit, at least not particularly brightly. And just as with the E-D and other modern ships, the red glow isn't particularly closely related to the state of motion of the vessel: as far as we know, it's not turned off when the vessel is supposedly idled, but only when she for some reason has lost power.

I've always wondered what that big open - blue-lit - compartment on the bottom of the secondary hull was...?

I assume some part of the warp-core(reactor)...but what? And why the need for it to be exposed to space (And why on only this class of vessel?)

Could be that this is where the transwarp machinery went. We never saw this cavity in ST3 where this ship supposedly had her transwarp drive installed. Perhaps it was ripped out after that movie, leaving the hollow space - but several sister ships had already been built to that shape, and the shape held crucial hardware such as ventral guns, and also formed an important strongback for the secondary hull. So it was easier to leave the shape there, even in newbuilds, while not putting anything much in the transwarp cavity.

FWIW, NCC-2000 in ST6:TUC is the only Excelsior class vessel to demonstrate blue glow in that region.

There have been links to pics in this thread that directly contradict your statement. That glow is clearly visible in the "stock shot" from TNG, and in Generations, at the very least.

Or is a space where you can slot in equipment like sensors or otherwise usefull stuff for when yer hunting for gaseous anomalies and the like ;)

Or is a slot where you can insert different types of mission module that can be transwarp tech, a shuttlebay, enlarged cargo bay, or a sensor cluster. ;)

In TUC at least, I'm still saying shuttlebay.

That blue lit section is the casino... :)

You think you're being funny, but suspiciously there was an Excelsior class U.S.S. Crazy Horse, U.S.S. Tecumseh, and U.S.S. Malinche. Proof that Native American gaming establishments survive to the 24th century post-currency economy. :shifty:

:p ;)

Stating on topic, there is a space between the impulse engines that "could" be a third smaller impulse engine but I can't be sure because there aren't many pictures of this paeticular area.

IIRC, the model kit instructions labeled that piece a flush vent, or something like that.
