DS9 Movie...

Sounds to me you're all over thinking this way too much for the sake of the current discussion. JJ's film was for all intents and purposes meant as a reboot and they found some scifi-y way to still tie it into the previous Treks. But it is highly unlikely that new installments will have any strong ties to the previous series. Old Spock is probably all we'll get in that regard. In that way it is reasonable to see a division between all that came before and the new film. Combine that with the very low probability of seeing any `continuation' of the old Trek back on the screen I can see how some people might not like that. But then that probability was as low as it could get when Enterprise ended it's run, so I'm not so sure we actually lost something there.

Speaking of which, the fact that they are about to released doesn't support your assumption that the existence of the fiction set in the fictional AU universe will somehow make it impossible for some other fiction to be set in the PU, does it? I find the assumption quite silly in itself. As someone on the TrekLit forum said, it's not like the readers will say:
Oooh, so these totally unreal stories are now less real than these other totally unreal stories? Aaaah, burn them, burn them! Come on. All that matters to most people is that the stories are enjoyable. It doesn't matter whether they think of them as a viable alternate history or simply an alternative way of imagining a made-up bunch of characters.
:rommie:

That is a straw man argument. The argument that was made had nothing to do with the validity of new Trek novel stories or anything even approaching that. It was the claim that after having a highly successful film set in a basically rebooted timeline, the probability of seeing a continuation of the primary TOS-TNG-DS9-VOY-ENT timeline on the screen has dropped basically to zero, at least for the foreseeable future. Of course it wasn't very high to begin with these last few years.

Well you finally hit the nail on the head - with that last line!

IMO the probability of seeing the continuation of the primary timeline, or any kind of Trek, on screen, was very close to zero; and could have just risen a few % after the new movie, because of the resurgence of interest of all things Trek. It only makes it more likely, not less likely.

What Christopher said about Trek literature also applies to the screen: even if you insist on ignoring Orci and Kurtzman's claim that the Prime Universe still exists, do you really think many people (outside of forums such as these) care if some fictional, totally unreal stories, are more or less "real" than some other fictional, totally unreal stories, and would refuse to watch a TV show or a movie because they're not sure if its timeline still exists? Come on!

No I don't think that, but then, once again, that has not much to do with the claim.

The way I see this realistically happening is:

1. Trek XI is a big hit.

2. TOS-era Trek series returns to TV.

3. TOS-era series is a decent hit (by today's standards).

4. 24th-C era spinoff series is contemplated.

5. Some DS9 characters are recast for the series.

For instance, here's our new Dr. Bashir.
Resurrecting the thread just to propose another hypothetical nuBashir... I don't know why I haven't thought of this before, but it occured to me when I rewatched Hamburg Cell again yesterday (another repeat on Viasat History).

(And please, keep in mind that I'm only talking about this hypothetically and for fun... If a DS9 movie was actually to be made now, which it probably won't, there would be no need to replace any actors - just set it 10 years later and that's it. And if it were to be made in 20 years time...we'd be talking about some other actors. Although that would work for my idea of an older Elizabeth Mitchell as Kai Winn :) ).

He's as good-looking as Siddig and a good actor from what I've seen of him (even if it was just one movie) and can play an educated, idealistic and apparently naive young man, but can at the same time look so inscrutable that I think I would really buy it from him that he was genetically engineered and has been keeping a huge terrible secret from all his friends all his life. I also think he would be better at playing the darker roles like Mirror Bashir or Vantika-as-Bashir in "The Passenger". (Siddig would probably be good at these roles now, since he's gotten better as an actor, but he wasn't that great back then.)

Interesting fact: he had a couple of scenes with Alexander Siddig, who had a cameo (although an important one) in Hamburg Cell.

Here's an idea--have the DS9 cast, set many years after the end of the show, using the books as a guide.

Same actors...with more years under their belt.

Been known to happen. ;)

It'd be nice to see Ezri's ship onscreen....

TV likes young, hot actors and nobody is going to bank on an audience that even knows DS9 books exist. They wouldn't even bank on an audience that knows the TV series exists.

Which is why it's such a long shot that by the time conditions are right for a DS9 spinoff, that DS9 would even be considered as the premise. Why not just do an all-new cast of hot Starfleet characters in their 20s and 30s?
Mmmm, not really. And certainly not as good a match as my guy. :D His nose is too big, for starters.

Like Patrick Stewart? Must be why TNG was successful.

In other words, why just not make another series that has nothing to do with DS9?

You're right, he is hotter than Siddig was, and certainly hotter than your guy :D (yes, I know him from Sleeper Cell... he is not that hot. His features are kinda... too small :cardie:).
