I don't watch Orville because its not Star Trek/an existing franchise.

I've been burned faaaaaaar too many times with new sci-fi getting canceled before having a proper ending so I don't start watching new shows until they finish.

Yeah, Orville is pretty much finished. Though an official announcement has not been made, the season 3 finale works just fine as a series finale, and as far as I'm concerned, that's exactly what it is.

Agreeing with others. It's done. Remember Doctor Who in 1989? There was no announcement for season 27 circa 1990, but no actual cancelation. There was a phone-in event to the BBC around 1991 or 1992, but even by then it was shelved as the actors went on to do different things.

  • We already know Orville's cast has signed on for other work, so it'll be more than a year for new episodes.
  • There's a writers' strike going on, which will also delay things
  • Season 3 had a couple moments showing dented set bits, despite the set upgrades shown elsewhere. Some sets would need to be repaired, but they weren't fixed before filming (or dented before a retake and couldn't stop to fix the wall panel whatsitbit.) Seems odd that anything dented would end up in any finished product that isn't made in the 20th century
  • Isn't Hulu cutting back on new content?

Orville got a bit too serious by the end. It lost its charm a bit.
I would go with Lower Decks.

^^this

The humor made a far more original blend, atop stories that had their own room to develop with enough serious and balance. Which was needed as the show definitely took itself too seriously when some plotting involved setting up a species whose goal is to exterminate anything organic yet also keeps saying 'surrender or die', unless the joke is on the viewer for taking it seriously? That doesn't seem to be quite the same thing, but I dunno. Either way, the blend was there and both complemented each other. Season 1 was great, season 2 started out great... If it works, don't change it. LD didn't feel a need to change, which is so much the better - it too is a blend, but its growth has felt authentic - and more robust all around.

That aside, the Orville storylines and arcs that were crammed into season two big-time, and each was solid enough, but they still did padding episodes like the stupid smartphone one. (On top of the cramming and rushing putting a big dent into the Kaylon stuff.) Did season 3's plot twists really feel as authentic as shown? Or is the "feel" due to cheezy incidental muzak Pavloving us to cry on cue?

Even the humor started taking a turn, unless they were making the most overuse of the Dolly Parton song. Even then, season 3 drops the ball on that big-time.

Any live action continuation of The Orville, if it ever happened, would need a timeskip. Even if it was a spinoff. Plus, I’d imagine animation would be cheaper to make, so that's another factor.

One the writer strike ends, they'll still have to write new episodes. And its clear some fans want a return to the workplace comedy vibe of S1.

All depend if the sets are still around, or if they'd have to build new ones. I don't know if Disney stores the sets or tear them down immediately like Paramount does with the Trek sets.

And the obstacle is Disney, who want to cut back on content. Its unrealistic to expect the cast of The Orville to wait around while the show's pending continuation is in limbo.

My inner fanboy would like to see the cast of the Orville pop up on LDS or SNW in quick cameo as the crew of another Starship. Probably easier to pull off on LDS,
