What's up with the weird hair styles for the characters?

Although, for the latter, SNW seems to be taking place during some type of Zumwalt era...
The hair on the men looks to be in keeping with the styles seen in TOS. The only main with a beard is M'Benga. And Sam of course has his trademark moustache. Ortegas' is high and tight. And the other women tend to keep their longer hair pulled back and in braids. Una wears it loose sometime, but that was common in TOS as well.Well, as a quasi-military, there are going to be uniforms—and grooming standards.

Though with multiple species serving, I doubt grooming standards can be one size fits all.

I think you mean they portray the era, not betray it. Betraying 2024 would be pretending it's still the sixties.
The word "betray" doesn't mean disloyalty in this instance. Rather, it means you can tell which era the show was created in simply by looking at the hairstyles worn by characters.

The more you know! I've heard betray used that way, but only as a detriment: "His voice betrayed his true intentions".
It mostly does have those connotations. "Reveal" or "show" comes closest.

I was indeed using "betray" in the sense of "give away" or "expose."
The sixties fashions give away the fact that, despite being ostensibly set in the future, the show was very much a product of the sixties.
See also constructions like:
"His accent betrayed his Gallic roots."

Compared with the hair we say on TOS it's pretty tame. My guess is they're trying to invoke the TOS style while still making it possible for a modern audience to take seriously.

Agreed with others. I see most of these hairstyles or something similar on a pretty regular basis in real life.
If anything, these hairstyles aren't "weird" enough. It's hundreds of years in the future, let's go whacky, like bringing back white powder wigs or something.
