I don't like this news about SNW season 3 from Screen Rant

I find it a slog to re-watch TV shows with more than 10 episodes a season these days, especially a series which has a lot of great episodes so I don't want to just skip them.

If they are arc based shows yes. STD was terrible that way. One story speead over 13 episodes. If the are stand alone its a lot easier.

Arc or episodic doesn't make a difference. It doesn't lengthen my day.

If its 13 to 15 it sure does. With an episodic show I get a full story within less than an hour. An arc based story I have to wait until the last episode. Slog through all that filler material. I think of it this way. STD had 5 seasons and basically 5 missions give or take some small side ones. I would rather watch 5 episodes of tos or any berman era trek rather than watch all of std again. To each his own though.

The main issue with serialised stories is that if the MacGuffin of the season doesn't grab you, it can feel like a write-off.

Or if it's a mystery box type thing and the final revelation falls flat for you, it can impact how you feel about the whole season. DSC S3 was a bit like this for me with the Burn. Others felt this away about PIC S3.

I think episodic with an overall arc or a recurring thread is a good way to go, and SNW strikes that balance well.

Sure, more episodes would be great. But you'd have to increase the per-episode budget or reduce the production values.

Maybe that wouldn't be the worst thing, limit the effects to one or two episodes and have more bottle shows. But I doubt it's that simple.

Some of the best episodes have taken place on the bridge of the enterprise.

Some of the best Star Trek episodes didn't feature the bridge of the Enterprise at all.
Right but if we are talking about saving the budget for a few more episides bridge based episodes would be cheaper. I like bridge based episides.

I just don't know how much cheaper an episode like that would be in the current environment. Costs to produce TV, especially complicated genre shows, have gone through the roof.

There would be a whole load of fixed costs and overheads that don't change, so you probably couldn't make 12 or 15 episodes for the current cost of 10.

Comparing with other similar genre shows, ten episodes is kind of above average.

Its too bad really. I fear they will stop at 4 seasons which gives us 40 episodes. STD got more than 10 a season. I dont see why we cant get that with SNW with all the other trek shows they've cancelled.

Because the industry has changed since Discovery premiered eight years ago. 12-15 episode seasons are no longer the norm for genre television.

The streaming bubble has burst.

The only reason Disco got more than ten episodes a season was because it had a co-production deal with Netflix for its first four seasons. The fifth season did not have that, nor did any of the other shows which is why they only have ten episodes per season.

They've been losing money for a bit with the streaming bubble popping.

They had projects drawing in enough viewers but not enough it seems.

Well maybe its for the best.
