Game The Most Disliked Season Finale Antagonist, 2025 Edition

THE OBJECTIVE: A sudden-death elimination game in which we remove our personal favorite villains/antagonists from a themed list, until we arrive at the antagonist that is, if not the worst, at least the most disliked.

THE RULES: Below is a list of villains and other antagonists from every Trek season finale to date.

Eliminate/save your favorite, or the one you deem the ‘best' or 'most interesting' or 'most compelling.'

Episode titles are provided for reference, but SAVE YOUR PREFERRED VILLAIN, RATHER THAN SAVING THE EPISODE ITSELF.

Post something you enjoy about the villain/antagonist you are saving, and copy-and-paste the list with your choice removed.

You can use any standard you like to judge which option is "best."

But -- no tactical voting! You cannot remove a villain because you don’t think anyone else will, or because you feel it would threaten your preferred villain's chance to “win.”

You can take multiple turns.

Leave at least 2 eliminations by other posters before you eliminate another episode.

New players are always welcome. You do not have to already be a "most disliked game" regular to dive in.

I'll start with saving Võx. What a perfect build that was to the asssimilated Jack Crusher. I have rewatched that scene where Picard talks him down with love a million times, and I cry every time. I don't think any other final confrontation has packed that level of emotional impact for me.

[Bad Thoughts]

Saving Pakleds (LD S1, "No Small Parts" & LD S2 "First First Contact", though not revealed till the S3 premiere). This is one of the most inventive recycling of concepts from Berman era Trek. It perfectly uses the anxiety of the Pakleds as something truly dangerous. The season 1 finale is beautiful, making me feel than animation can rival the live action special effects. Shaxs death is also moving. No Small Parts is a towering episode, and First First Contact is great as well.

A few I could save for unexpected reasons, but let's start with the best:

The Q Continuum (TNG S7, "All Good Things...")

Our "Q" started as evil if not chaotic-evil, he transitioned into chaotic-good soon enough by showing Picard some of the REAL dangers out there, as if season 2 hadn't done a little of that already. Then came the other Q, who put our Q into exile. Exile was lifted, in came Amanda from Oz and so on, until this finale, where the Continuum decided humans were indeed worthy of extermination, and it was our Q who stepped in by bending the rules in a neat twist of fate (e.g. "doing a Kirk from ST3 TSFS") to save Picard and humanity. I can dig it. Sadly, no further Q adventure would explore Q but instead faffed around with other things and took the 21st century robes out of context when Q's kid came in (in what's the best post-TNG Q story, ironically!).

Idea vs execution prevailing, from what I can remember,

Locutus (TNG S3, "The Best Of Both Worlds")

is saved. Locutus is next. Never before was a lead cybertized and the reason given, as a locus of focus for the introduction of the Collective, is pretty damn good, sensational, if not the best IMHO. Indeed, some headcanon for 1996 could have revealed that the Borg, after Locutus failed, needed someone sterner and came up with the Queen (instead of that limited dimensional thinking fluff the film used.)

Arturis is awesome, a result of Janeway's antics lead to the assimilation of his people and he wants revenge. Okay, ignore the "How did he copy all the technology so easily" and even the episode has a couple set lapses that reveal the thing isn't Federation, but it's a mild nitpick given the strength of the story. The Dauntless exterior was pretty gorgeous as well, I agree!

Ignoring the story, but think of the character as this is (to me) about the character first and everything else as factors after that:

Crosis (TNG S6, "Descent")

Crosis was awesome and is a Locotus of a different sort. A bunch of Borg drones now made individualized, created because of Picard's lucky happenstance of letting the post-assimilated "Hugh" Borg getting a taste of emotions and got to share that with the Collective, for which all that ran unchecked for long enough. The result created so much terrific potential and, yeah, for all the nitpicks, "I, Borg" and "Descent" were on the right track at not trying to one-up "The Best of Both Worlds" but genuinely trying to use them differently and it's not entirely unsuccessful:

• Individual names
• desire for revenge for their fallen friends, and done not in a trite way
• Cool Borg ship redesign because these Borg also appreciate art for artistry sake and not mere "function and redundancy utility".
  • The main Collective doesn't want them back (no hint, but a guess, and it's a nice low key parallel with "Skin of Evil" regarding Armus's buddies too)
• The line "Did it feel good to kill?" is superbly acted, building up much chilling tension and in a story in a season where every bit of involvement as possible was necessary

Wish the story focused on all that more than the doggie leash runaround chase in order to reveal... Lore... and the melodramatic "The Songs of Soong will Conquer the Federation, moohahahaha!" and yet none of the zillion Borg around them can't be bothered to think "Durh, does that mean he's not going to help us?" pt 2 really craters the story as well, but pt 1 - for all its nitpicks - genuinely has a great villain and much potential, up until the cliffhanger reveal.

I can think of stories with smoother plotting but have tepid characters This one edges out because it had more potential, and the main baddie rocks.
