Game The Most Disliked Holodeck Episode, 2025 Edition

THE OBJECTIVE: A sudden-death elimination game in which we remove our personal favorite episodes/movies from a themed list, until we arrive at the episode that is, if not the worst, at least the most disliked.

It's a framework to say positive things about episodes from across the franchise.

THE RULES: Below is a list of Holodeck episodes from the eight series that have used the convention. (Specifically Federation holodecks & Quark's holosuites. Alien holo-tech is on a different list)

Eliminate/save your favorite, or the one you deem the ‘best' of what currently remains.
Post something you enjoy about the episode you are saving, and copy-and-paste the list with your choice removed.

You can use any standard you like to judge which option is "best." You can save episodes for being widely recognized “best Trek” classics, or for idiosyncratic qualities that no one appreciates but you.

As you get down the list, you might have to reach more and more for something to enjoy about an episode, and it's OK to eventually save episodes for being "less bad."

But -- no tactical voting! You cannot remove an episode because you don’t think anyone else will, or because you feel it would threaten your preferred episode's chance to “win.”

You can take multiple turns.

Leave at least 2 eliminations by other posters before you eliminate another episode.

New players are always welcome. You do not have to already be a "most disliked game" regular to dive in.

I'm saving "Crisis Point", as it was the point where my beloved Lower Decks revealed its true power level and went from good to great.

It parodied the Star Trek movies with so much love that its homage to the endless Enterprise reveal in TMP finally sold me on the design of the Cerritos. It took Mariner's arc to its darkest place, having her gleefully murder holograms of her crew, and I thought it was genius to have it all leading up to a Superman 3-style fight against her good side which ends with her getting some well earned character development. Plus Boimler learns her secret! And Leonardo DaVinci saves the day!

A different take on TNG's "Frame of Mind", this was done really well. This should have aired in VOYAGER's first season as it was produced for it.

Great highlight for The Doctor, great script by Braga, great directing by Frakes, and great acting by Picardo.

Saving LD Season 3: "Crisis Point 2: Paradoxus." Lower Decks is often at its best when it shows how self-aware it is about what makes the franchise. The hollowness of the search for meaning in narratives is a compelling critique. I feel for Boimler in this one, where each symbol and sign ends up being empty ... until he finds truth in his own imagination. Beware, AI providers, you aren't being creative!

TNG Season 1: “11001001”

Season 1 combines yet again an educational slant with high concept sci-fi fun instead of hauling delegates and we sometimes need both.

Add some basic fun with solar flares, along with then-current computer science bits. No pun intended, and this one isn't "Tron" either. And shouldn't be. It's Star Trek. And a good one!

The Bynars need a ship to store a backup of their database and runtime systems since they never figured out how to build a giant-sized Faraday cage, which ranks up there with ancient humans figuring out everything but the wheel, whatever that is. In a way, it'd make more sense to reverse-engineer or obtain the schematics anyhow, as they didn't know much to do with space travel and bigging that big and thick a Faraday cage would be insurmountable. It all works and fits nicely.

Quinteros - nice to see a guest cast from TOS make a return and in a meatier role.

The Yar/Worf exchange about Parseses Squares and why not to keep score is excellent. Even better in blu-ray with that color palette that is impopssible to rekerjigger with gamut enhancement techniques.

Minuet probably wasn't a last-minute addition to the script, even though the ending where it's just so lucky that Jean-Luc was there to do the Bynar Shuffle at the same time as Riker (and she says his being there was a fortunate happenstance, suggesting either another possible solution was there or the Bynars acted out too late, hence their pesky emotions taking over.)

The ship isn't Spock's corpse, but this episode - unlike a certain "Naked Now" - shows how to be influenced by an old story while making it feel utterly original. That is how you do it. The allusion is the ship needing to be taken and moved somewhere, while the thieves aren't Kirk.

And the reason is noble enough: They only think in absolutes, without the big picture above them, even if they though above it. It's a multi-layer onion of sorts, though it's a 3-dimensional onion, and an onion that doesn't make you smell bad for liking it either.

It's a brilliant story, too long and far overlooked.

TNG Season 2: “Elementary, Dear Data”

Oh heck, yeah! Season 2 continues to remind that, for every single clunker it's got and I see one of them on thar list there thusly, there's four stories that raise the show's bar higher and this one raises it quite high.

Moriarty is a fantastic villain, whose creation is a bit of genius. More than ably acted by Daniel Davis, he's iconic in his own right in his Trek episodes. All three of them.

We get more of that Geordi/Data double-act goodness.

Best of all: The seeds are sewn for Pulaski's often overlooked character arc and growth that's intertwined with the other arc of this season, exploring Data's humanity (sound familiar? Perhaps, but future double-acts all felt original in their own rights, but I digress.) On an initial reaction to her first story, there are some McCoy parallels, but there's more than enough to differentiate the characters from the OG to the NG. Plus, Pulaski grows as a character and became more enjoyable each episode as they were able to conclude this mini arc just in time. She grows to appreciate and even immensely like Data by the end, ditching the sarky comments altogether. The most we saw was McCoy and Spock being constant frenemies, throughout. Also, I like the EMH, but let's keep it real: He kept spouting McCoy memes while Pulaski more was her own character than a "McCoy ripoff" would allow for. Then again, McCoy never belched out into song either, so it's all good.

But it's only for theatrical effect that Geordi runs out of the holodeck holding Moriarty's still-not-disintegrating copy of the ship's port view drawing upside down. And, yep, the holodeck combines replicator technology, but not enough for a living life form -- only inanimate simple objects and foodstuffs like what the replicators do. Now just wait for the day when it can. Or when the ship becomes sentient instead of the computer server farm devoted to holographic generation entities within its sandboxed realm.

Wasn't there a deleted scene, which explained some things but created worse plotholes as a result? Meh...

But Pulaski - overlooked and underappreciated? I'd argue so. As TNG was trying to not be TOS in direct characters copies, the Data parallels from season 1 were a start and the "She's McCoy!" stuff only doubled down. I recall a post from another person in the TNG forum that I am hoping to find, explaining how the reaction to Pulaski by the audience might not have been so harsh if minor adjustments were made to her introduction, if not season 1 to spread possible seeds to make their introduction and early spats less headpounding.

Saving VOY Season 1: “Heroes And Demons”. This is a wonderfully understated episode. The interactive program interacting with the interacting program may be a bit funny, not to mention that one of those is trying to discover himself. I like the meta of this episode, probing how myths help to find identity. I also like the challenge of being a hero against modern realities.

If intuition were real, it'd be called the T-800 and would walk around finding clothing to wear to blend in, for the sake of offing people crucial to the timeline.

TNG Season 3: “Booby Trap”

Geordi wanting more than a bland voice, in due part to his bad holodeck date going awry (don't ask how the same lady in "Transfigurations" gave him another chance, but we're glad she did, so he asks computer to create one. He accepts the margin of error that computer will put in. He even states "this isn't right" when said compu-image massages his shoulders due to picking up on his tension. And as marital status is included as off-limits information, of course computer could make some mistakes with the redacted data.

Why does Geordi want this? Well, they've landed into Newton's nightmare: A minefield that sucks up energy to power itself with, returning the favor by burping out radiation that becomes lethal if you bask in it for long enough.

At the end, Picard opts to take the conn and does what nobody programmed the computer to do in that circumstance. At the end of the day, computers are great but aren't any more perfect than people. Probably.
