Why do I get the feeling there's more to the story of Brekka being overrun by the Breen?

Personally I think the Ornarans intentionally tipped off the Breen that Brekka might be useful as a target for invasion, in exchange for Ornara itself being spared.

Why would Ornara do this? As revenge for the Brekkians' exploitation of the Ornarans.

Oh, come on, don't even try to tell me you weren't wondering what the Ornarans would do once they found out what the Brekkians had been doing to them?

Oh, and the reason I just put all that in spoilercode was so the Fucking Lawyers(tm) wouldn't bitch about it being a “story idea”.
Speculation is fine. people do it all the time, there's an entire thread in Pic for speculation.

And I doubt any of the show writers are reading this forum, but who knows.

Loved seeing Starbase 80 but it got me thinking into the workings of Starfleet and particularly the promotions/transfers within

I know for a fact if I'd been transferred to a s--t hole Starbase I would've done exactly as Mariner did and hand in my resignation and said *f--k this for a game of soldiers, I'm off!*

Makes me wonder what hold Starfleet has on its staff that places like this are occupied in the first place

But otherwise a fantastic episode and I'm looking forward to the season finale on Thursday

I think the difference is because there are known writers who browse that subforum.

But not ONLY that subforum.

Like I said...writers can frequent any forum they want. No reason to expect them to limit themselves to the Treklit forum. So any precautions which apply to that subforum must also apply to all others as well.

Even if they are reading this forum (not outside the realm of possibility, Ron Moore has admitted he's been to Trek BBS) they're definitely registered, at least not publicly. That's why the rule exists in the Trek Lit forum, several authors and editors are registered with their real names, providing a clear chain of connection should they use a storyline which was discussed in the Trek Lit forum.
Why would that make a difference? Writers can read this forum just like any other.
But again, they're not registered here, at least not under their real names or an otherwise verified account. There is no chain of connection should an idea discussed here end up on the show, and therefore no legal grounds for any kind of suit should an idea discussed here end up on the show.

But I get it, you like to insult lawyers and aren't interested in nuance.

Given that LDS seems to be a lot more in touch with the fans than, say, DSC, I wouldn't be at all surprised if they were.

It's not just M-5. A.I.s gone wrong or becoming megalomaniacal killers is enough of a problem that there is an entire section dedicated to just that, based on where Agimus and Peanut Hamper ended up. So yes, I agree that Starfleet, or at least a part of it, is not learning their lessons well or keeping such things in mind.

Full automation without some kind of manual override in case something goes wrong is just plain stupid.

There are plenty of examples if one bothers to look.

You're seriously using Youtube as "research?"

Not to mention just about everything in the list is basically..."sounds creepy, amirite?" And none of it actually involves self-aware machines, just uncanny behavior by chatbots and the like.

Heh ... How do you think Skynet started.

I don't know. I would either see the Starbase 80 assignment to be a time to relax for a while, or an opportunity for redemption. It depends on the nature of the assignment, and how long. I know from my own work experience, being assigned to less-than-stellar assignments, I would use that opportunity to either slack off, or as an opportunity for career advancement. Usually, I would do the former just to take a break from the grind before moving on.
