As far as I'm aware. Every race that's gone thorugh gene manipulation has ended up with one shade or other of an augment war/arms race that ends in a war.

One of my theories is that most of the other races have already had their genetic engineering period hundreds of years ago. They pushed the enhancement as far as it could go safely, and have been passing it on naturally ever since. This is why so many other races are stronger and longer lived than humans. They don't advertise this, and go along with the Human ban because 1: they are already maxed out, and 2: Humans are already major competition without being enhanced.

Also they've seen what enhanced humans are like from those that violate the ban.

Human Augments tend to be kinda terrifying.

I have very mixed opinions about this one. I quite liked the A plot. The cubes vs orbs might not be the most original idea, but I liked it and thought it was integrated well into the show. They had a lot of good lines to give them and they were fun. The moment I saw the destroyed room though, I assumed immediately it was a Romeo and Juliet plot, so I wasn't surprised at the conclusion. I did think that Olly was going to have an "Okana" role where she was secretly helping the young couple hide from their parents, but the reveal that her electrical powers were getting in the way of being an effective engineer. Not a bad plotline.

On the other hand, I really did not like the B plot. One of my big criticisms of the earlier seasons is that there was just too many zany antics going on without really any depth to it. While the A plot still had that chaotic energy, we still get to see how Mariner has improved as an officer. With the Boimler plot, it just felt wacky and superficial. It's been in the back of my mind all season that while Mariner and Boimler typically share equal spotlight, he really has taken a back seat this season. He hasn't really had an A plot himself, and his arc is seemingly going to be about comparing himself to Alt!Boimler. That's something early season Boimler would definitely have struggled with, so it's almost like he's regressing in a way. I suspect in the finale he'll learn to embrace himself, but I honestly wonder if the next four episodes will just be all Mariner-centric. They've done a good job with her development, but with this being the last season, I think a lot of us would like to see her in a good place with her responsibilities and him in a good place with his self-confidence, and this arc isn't getting us there.

Very good post, and sums up my feelings pretty well on this one.

I wonder if Boimler will discover that Beard Boimler only became confident later or some such. I hope not.

Did like the A plot. And all the Okona callbacks (from this and Prodigy) make me smile. I never got the hate for that episode. It wasn't THAT bad.

Enjoyed this episode.
Feels strange this series is ending soon.
In the subtitles, the cubes all together are called "Omegacube". I missed what the spheroid counterpart was called.

Visually, this episode is stunning. The colors of the aliens are vibrant. The outstanding shot is the merging nebula in the opening scene.

This screenshot - thansk, @Jag2112! - reminds me of Star Trek: Armada, like a Starfleet ship sitting on the overlap between Cerulean and Mutara-class nebulae.

Possibly a not very relevant episode for the season but a very funny one, I love the idea of a nephew of zeus and it was fun seeing everyone knew about boimler’s reading habit.

The war between the (unimaginative) cubes and spheres was great and while I expected a Romeo and Juliet situation (but not a child!) I still enjoyed the idea.

Granddaughter.

Shocked that I'm the first to mention Mark McHenry, a Starfleet officer from the TNG YA novels and New Frontier series, who turned out to be the great-grandson of Carolyn Palmas and Apollo (though he kept it on the Q.T., and his superhuman abilities were a bit more subtle than a crown of glowing leaves). Who knew he had a cousin?

Seems to be a permanent physiological feature. Like Andorian antennae
So what would its purpose be? Sensing energy flows? Power regulation? Simple aesthetics? I ask mainly because i have a low effort fic that Olly's quasi In quasi might have more to do later on.

See, I didn't know about this. Given Olly is going to be in my fic to some extent (How much I dunno) it's worth spitballing on something least offensive to community sensibilities.

What were his abilities?
