Yeah. I too am old enough to know what you’re talking about. Sigh.

That is why we older folks need to be listened to. We have wisdom. We know all sorts of useless trivia and we love knowing it and knowing young people don't know it. One of these days some of these youngsters are going to be asked who was cooler. Mac Tonight or The California Raisins and they won't know how to answer the question. But we Gen X and Boomers will know. The answer is Spuds MacKenzie.

Pardon me. Memory Alpha identifies Captain Rayner as a Kellerun. Is that established in the two eps, or background material, or just based on the shape of his ears?

The music this season is still Jeff Russo

but it feels different. Some of the tracks have felt very TOS movie style

Who are the Kellerum? Have we seen them before? Also what kind of alien is the alien who is teamed up with the blonde girl baddie?

My theory is Kurtzman turned to Master Matalas and begged him to ghost right this season of Discovery, hence the improvement. Said "Do this and your Legacy show will happen." It's the only logical conclusion.:)

He's even played a singing Moon that plays piano.
I was today years old when I learned that Doug Jones was Mac Tonight! That’s awesome.

Okay, so I will put my thoughts on both episodes together here if that's okay

Things I liked:
1) They shuttered the spore drive. It always drove me nuts that they kept making the spore drive a central plot point, and I'm glad to see that, so far at least, this season will buck that trend.
2) I'm very happy to see Stamets back to bent more of a prickly asshole. That's what I liked about him to begin with.
3) Speaking of prickly assholes, I ready like both Raynor and Kovich.
4) it was really cool to see a Romulan science vessel again.
5) I like Moll and L'ak a lot so far. A very charismatic pair.
6) I really enjoyed the actor who portrayed Fred.
7) I'm really glad to have Tilly back.
8) The plot, so far, is intriguing. It can still go sideways, but so far I want to know where it goes and it gives space to visit since interesting locations.
9) A happy ending for Saru! One where he's not demoted to Burnham's underling.

And things I didn't like:
1) I'm tired of them making the first officer a captain. Especially since Raynor's clearly an older, more experienced officer. There's no reason aside from blaming him for what the villains did.
2) the whole "We have to find the pieces of the map!" plot reminds me uncomfortably of Rise Of Skywalker.
3) The opening scene, while thrilling, had logic holes you could fly a starship thru.
4) I kwish we were going to Betazed. It'd be someplace new. Instead we're going to Trill, again, which is really just an excuse to bring in the eternally dull Gray.
5) I hate, hate, hate that they added a familial connection between Book and Moll. They don't need that, and it's so coincidental it completely breaks the suspension of disbelief. And I just know they're going to devote an annoying amount of time to it.
6) minor nits: If that puzzle box was so vital, why only send 3 people to the Romulan ship? What if they'd sent a whole security detail? And why was Fred so completely inept at defending himself? And why was this mission considered so classified even Vance wasn't told about it? And how the heck does a sandstorm block hyper-advanced transporters?

And those are my thoughts so far. I'm cautiously optimistic about the rest of the season.

Old decrepit ship, minimal detail to avoid casualties. And effective at securing spaces, if their foes were not already there.

That'd be fine, if they hadn't already detected life signs aboard and still expected them to be there.

He wasn't programmed for it. He cleary is programmed for social interaction and data retrieval.
He clearly is meant to be analogous to Data. And is specifically a Soong-type android. There's no reason to believe he wouldn't be just as capable as literally every other Soong-type Android we've seen on Star Trek.

Gave this episode a 7, like the premiere. Although the premiere was slightly better. So the first episode a 7.5 and this one a 7. Both were fun romps with nice moments. The best start to a Discovery season in awhile. They're definitely trying to make it more fun and less mopey, which is a good thing. Still has too much of the whisper acting going on though.

Overall, I'm enjoying Discover more this season than the past two seasons. I hope they can keep this up!

But holy Small Universe Syndrome!! Given the Romulan poem, the first planet under consideration is Betazed but then becomes Trill with the extra verse. Not only are they two planets associated with Trek main characters but currently one is on board Discovery with issues. But, wait, there's more! Book knows Moll. Out of everyone in the galaxy, she's the daughter of his mentor. Whodathunk?!

I suppose small universe syndrome happens but usually not this blatant!

So, it looks to me like they really will have enough time to tell the story they wanted to.
Actually, the problem with Discovery for seasons 3 & 4 is that they didn't have enough story to fill their number of episodes. That became evident as we got more than a few episodes into the season.

We still need to see if they have enough story for this season. Fingers crossed!

I predicted that ST: DISCO would be five seasons over seven years. I suspect that the decision to conclude it was based on multiple reasons, not just financial, but also a sense that the production was ready to move on to other projects.
Agreed. It was pretty obvious that Discovery was wearing down to a halt. It just wasn't Paramount's strongest Trek series. Combine that with the financial stuff and it makes sense to cut it.
