8/10 Very Entertaining!
The Pros:
Anson Mount/Chris Pike really elevates this series! The charm, the humor, the commanding presence. The charisma. Where was all of this during Season One? This is definitely embracing Star Trek instead of trying to subvert or deconstruct it. Looks like they took some tonal inspiration from The Orville. This is definitely what audiences want from their lead, and we haven't really gotten this on Trek since the 90s. Very different from the way Hunter played it, but a necessary presence to balance out this show.
This episode was more spectacle over substance, but the spectacle was well-executed. No wonder they went way over-budget.
No edgelord Klingons, #feminism moments, or any of the questionable elements from Season One. Looks like they took a lot of the online complaints for S1 seriously. They even had a role-call for the damn bridge crew, lol'd at that.
Sonequa was quite serviceable in the role this time. The problem is Burnham is only interesting here because of her connection to Spock, and we are already emotionally invested in Spock. But even if they have to piggyback her character to Spock to garner interest, it works.
The visuals and technology are vastly different from TOS, but at this point you have to accept Discovery as a visual reboot.
The Cage easter egg was a little on the nose, but I enjoyed it nevertheless. Been waiting 50 years for the continuation of the Hunter Pike, despite me being alive for half that time, and Mount didn't disappoint. I'm very skeptical about Peck playing Nimoy's Spock though. It will be a much harder sell.
The Cons:
- Tilly. Her awkward borderline autistic outbursts killed the intensity of the scenes here, and the comet recovery didn't really fit in with the episode at the end. I'm guessing that subplot may get cut if this show gets 1hr syndication someday. I hope that they keep her in the engineering with Stamets for the rest of the series as the nerd crew. She shouldn't be a bridge officer.
- Not a con, but an observation.. they are certainly trying to sweep the Klingon war, with millions dead, under the rug and move on. It's a good move for the show's entertainment purposes. Definitely feels like a reboot of the series and a course correction.
Better than anything they did last season, by leaps and bounds.
