Shatner's weight gain across the series

Gary7

Vice Admiral
Admiral
It is quite noticeable when you watch an early season 1 episode and then a season 3 episode back-to-back... Shatner does look "fuller." I wonder how much weight he actually gained? Did anyone ever do a "progression" photo montage of Shatner's body changes from season one to season three? :)

I seem to remember that you could see the position of the episode in the season by the frequency of Shat taking his shirt off. During the first episodes of the season, he'd show his bod a lot, during the last ones, not so much.

It may not have been much -- unless you're big or fat to begin with, even 10 pounds can change your appearance drastically, especially at middle age, especially on camera. Shatner had the double whammy of being in his late 30s, where other body changes occur. It makes me chuckle when people call him fat -- I'm in the midwest, where the average person walking down the street is overweight and would be lucky to look like a third season Shatner. Lowrise jeans should be outlawed in this state if your belly sticks out further than your chin(s).

Too much time on your hands, eh, Gary7? ;)

Well, I don't really care about the Shat's weight - he's always been compact and I like that. And I like Kirk in all his different weight states, as long as he's portrayed by Shatner. :) Kirk and weight problems just belong together...(Green leaves??!!)

What's with all the negativity? The guy put on weight ... we're committed to studying every detail about the show (be honest) ... and as a Shat-head and classic Trek fan, I find the weight gain to be a valid subject; maybe some of you don't.

I too (and my wife, he actually loves "now" Shat as opposed to "then" Shat!), have noticed the differences ... in the first season, he was almost too light! He was pretty hefty by season 3. A couple of weeks ago, we watched "Arena" and "Day of The Dove" back-to-back, and the weight thing was one of the topics.

His hair is messy a lot in season 3 as well - maybe that was gaining weight?

Oh - I wanted to add that I can't figure out if the weight gain was just from getting fat, or working out - there's a gut, but ...

From Shatner to Fatner, eh? I guess he liked food too much. Somewhat ironic since it was Nimoy who was knocking back all the beers...you'd have thought he'd have been the one to put on the pounds.

It's a cliche, but the camera does add ten pounds.

As far as making fun of Shatner's weight gain, it's become part of the lore. He's an action hero with a beer huggie for a belly button.

I'd also like to point out that while I make fat Shat jokes all the time, I probably outweigh the season three Shatner by 10 pounds.

Joe, but it's all back hair

I remember reading somewhere (The Making of Star Trek, I'm about 80% sure) that Shatner didn't have much time to work out during production so he gained weight as the seasons went along. Then he'd loose it during the break when he had more time to exercise and be slim again in time for the start of the next season. I've never paid enough attention to see if that make sense though. haha.

I still think Shat looks cool, if a little unkept, in the third season. Combined with the different shirt material, it was like a whole new look!

There was NO WAY you'd be seeing him in his "Mirror Mirror" or alternate shirts from the second season, though!

He was amazingly thin for TMP (he earned it, as stated in Movie Memories), but I think he forgot to shave his arm hair ...

It was just a curiosity... I'm not criticizing him for his weight. It's just interesting to see if he followed the trend. Look at Frakes... he definitely gained weight during the series. So did Spiner. I have to believe it's a combination of things. Certainly an intense shooting schedule may cut into exercise time. But then there's also the benefits of being successful... maybe more indulging of heavy foods.

On the other hand, Nimoy always looked fit. Even through the movies. Maybe he was a little more disciplined or had a more manageable metabolism. :)

Actually, Nimoy got a little chubby in Star Trek V. Spock had a paunch for the first time ever. This stuck around for a few years.

If you watch the third season in production order, you can see how Shatner started out with a really round face (lots of close ups) and, as the season progressed, he lost a LOT of weight. That, plus his new boot lifts and the longer tunics, made him look taller and thinner. At times, thuogh, a girdle is obvious.

Notice in Paradise Sydrome, his shirtless scenes are cut very quickly and they are obscured.

But yeah, even though he started packing some weight, I would kill to look like third season Kirk.

Shatner was in good shape throughout the first season. Partway through Season 2, he quit smoking, and that's when the weight gain began. By the time Obsession was filmed, he was rather puffy. His weight was highest by season three - despite the longer uniforms and the girdle, you can see it in his face. Watch the end of The Cloud Minders. Also, during Kirk's physical in Turnabout Intruder, Shatner has dark makeup on his abdomen to simulate ab muscles.

Shatner lost a LOT of weight for the first movie, too much, IMO. He looks rather gaunt in some scenes. He gradually gained weight over the course of the films. In The Undiscovered Country, he's quite portly. Yet, it somehow looks right on him.

Shatner's 78 now. He looks good for his age. But over the last 10 years he's gained an unhealthy amount of weight - that can't be good for his heart. He could trim down, if he wanted to enough. My Dad, who's 2 years older than Shatner and has the same basic body type, recently went on a diet and exercise regimen and lost 30 pounds. In fact, he's in better shape than his 42 year old son!

I'd like to see season 3 shat in tunics from the same material as the first 2 seasons....I mean obviously the man put on some weight but I think the one-two punch of this and the crappy new material magnified it.

I disagree. Those velour tunics from the first two seasons had a tendency to ride up - they were also cut too short. The third season used wool gabardine, IIRC, and hid a multitude of sins, and skin!

Also, have you seen the tons of food served by the catering company in the big productions? That sure is a lot of food! Anybody can gain weight from that.

Shat's weight was at it's most problematic during the end of the 2nd season. In The Ultimate Computer, director Lucas avoids the full side-shots like the plague: in the teaser where he meets Bob Wesley, they bring him around the transporter console to hide the belly. In Omega Glory, there is that unfortunate shot of him and his chins lying unconscious after being bonked on the head by Cloud William.

In "Inside Star Trek" by Justman and Solow, there's a memo where Justman calls attention to Shatners weight, how people at the (March 68) Emmys were noticing he looked "heavy".

Filming on the 3rd season began in late May 68, and in Spectre of the Gun some of the early shots on the Bridge have Shatner looking tubby, but as the episode progressed, and by the time of Spock's Brain, he had definitely taken off about 10 pounds.

Then he started to slip again, where by Cloud Minders he was looking zaftig again. Then he trimmed a few so he could take his shirt off in Turnabout Intruder, where, faux-abs or not, he looked pretty good.

Hey, when you're 5'8", no matter what you do, you're at a disadvantage when filmed next to the taller and eternally slim DeForest Kelley and Leonard Nimoy. You either starve and end up with the biceps of Kelley or workout 2-3 hours a day, not easy when you've got a 12-hour shooting schedule 6 days a week.

Shatner looked good thin or "heavy"...IMO he certainly was not heavy in season 3, yes he packed on a few pounds...but never, ever did he not look good. Personally in the show and in real life I don't mind a little belly fat...I think it's sexy.
