Rick Berman's an ***hole

Turd Ferguson

Rear Admiral
Rear Admiral
Sorry... I'm a little drunk.

So I've been watching the Next Generation Blu-Rays and they're not quite as good as I remember them being (read: First Contact, Generations) some are better than I remember (read: Nemesis, Insurrection).

That having been said, all four movies seemed to focus very heavily on Picard and Data. On all four movies they receive the brunt of the storytelling and character arc-ing. That's okay, I suppose, since minority characters also receive some development (i.e., Riker and Troi refalling in love and getting married).

But, the rest of the characters (namely Worf, whom I can overlook, since DS9 was going on at the same time, and I think Worf got some good storytelling going on at this time) got some pretty shitty storytime.

However Geordi, whose been in the bottom rung for the NextGen movies gets a raw deal in these movies. For seven years he's been the blind chief engineer. He's never seen a sunrise and had been blind from birth. By the time Insurrection rolls around, he's pretty happy to have his sight. So, when they leave the Briar Patch, Troi and Riker are still very much in love and end up getting married four years later.

Would it have been so goddamned much to ask that Geordi been able to keep his fucking vision? That just seemed like a big fuck you to Geordi fans (which I don't consider myself to be, I'm just being an impartial observer).

In four movies of action schlock, the only character development that actually occurs (that has ramifications for the whole NextGEn series) doesn't even get a two second explanation in the following movie. Geordi goes from having perfect vision to all of a sudden needing his ocular implants again. What the fuck?

Once again, all the ills of the world are Rick Berman's fault.

Why do you want us to be spoonfed little explanations for everything? Geordi wistfully went to look at the sunset (sunrise?) at the end of "Insurrection" because he knew his newly-gained sight was only temporary. I don't need any more explanation than that in "Nemesis". I'm quite capable of filling in the gaps.

In any case, La Forge was named as a homage/tribute to a permanently disabled ST fan, George La Forge - and to permanently "cure" Geordi would be seen by some as a slight against George's memory.

Without Berman, I don't think TNG would have gotten past Roddenberry's advancing dementia, frankly.

Berman did a great job (not a perfect one) and made his bosses a shit-ton of money. Good on him.

Joe, rational adult

Re: Rick Berman's an asshole

I agree with Joe.

Also, I'm reasonably certain that Rick Berman never got drunk and posted on an internet message board about what an asshole he thought someone was.

Re: Rick Berman's an asshole

What about Riker? He shaved his face in the Briar Patch but then four years later in Nemesis he has his beard back? What the fuck?! This flies totally in the face of the integral character development and is a middle finger to Riker fans everywhere. Rick Berman ought to be ashamed.

Oh, and so should that twit Brannon Braga. Despite not being involved in Insurrection or Nemesis, clearly had a hand in this crime against Roddenberry.

Oh, when will our saviour JJ Abrams correct these wrongs with the appropriate amount of lens flares, Nokia ads, and zeroes? How much longer must we live in this squander Berman has forsaken us to?

Really people, Rick Berman is not the evil entity you try to present him as. Move on with life and stop making the man the scapegoat for all your personal problems and frustrations.

Re: Rick Berman's an asshole

TNG films focused on Picard and Data. But the TOS films focused mainly on Kirk and Spock, and the rest of the characters had to settle for cute one-liners or story elements that were discarded from film to film. It's just what happens when you have seven characters and two hours to tell a large story.

Re: Rick Berman's an asshole

Wow. I don't remember posting this.

Usually when I get drunk I don't get into belligerent rants on a Star Trek message board.

Re: Rick Berman's an asshole

I heard around the time INSURRECTION first came out that LeVar Burton preferred for Geordi to become blind all over again once the Enterprise was away from the effects of the Briar Patch. Something about him preferring his character to retain the disability he'd had almost his entire life as a way to show that you can't always cure illnesses or conditions even if there's some wild magical potion offered you somewhere out in the galaxy. And Geordi's greatest appeal and strength on TNG and in the movies was always that he was a disabled man who still managed to kick ass and be the best engineer in Starfleet.

Re: Rick Berman's an asshole

Perhaps Rick Berman is an asshole. But he's an asshole who got to be the man in charge of all of Star Trek for over 20 years and is now worth approximately as much as Ohio. I want to be that kind of asshole.

Re: Rick Berman's an asshole

Didn't they actually say in INS that the effects of the radiation only lasted ON the Ba'ku planet? Therefore explaining Geordi's lack of real eyes in NEM by onscreen dialogue?

The radiation caused the optical nerves to regenerate and repair themselves. Unless Geordi had some sort of degenerative nerve disease that would kill him anyway, it doesn't make any sense that he'd lose his newfound sight.

He didn't lose it, but since his exposure to that particular radiation was limited in duration, the repaired cells are fewer than normal cells doing the same job. A couple of more looks into light (even just view screens showing stars close-up), and his vision would again be lost forever. He wears occular enhancers now, which shield the sensitive new cells to extreme light, as well as radiation. Better than blind, yet somewhat less than full, normal vision. And they have various magnification functions.

Re: Rick Berman's an asshole

Geordi did, however, say in the movie that the effect might not last. And although it seems more scientifically plausible that the effect would be permanent, I think I agree with LeVar Burton that giving Geordi his sight back would rob that character of something important.

Now that one you can't put one Berman. I think I saw somewhere something about a cut scene that didn't make the dvd deleted scenes bonus. It was supposed to take place a month before the wedding scene and it had to do with Picard begging Riker to grow the beard back before he took command of the Titan because having a triple chin just wasn't very Captainly.

I'm sure I read that somewhere....or maybe it just imagined it one night when I was drunk. :wtf:

:guffaw:
