Mass Effect: ANDROMEDA

I hope they'll go back to the ME1 kind of music which really created that alien mood and made you feel a little uneasy at times.
Totally. I was so bummed when they announced that Jack Wall wouldn't be doing the ME3 soundtrack.

ME1 was my favorite OST, with some great, subtle Bladerunner-esque influences.

I managed to get into the Xbox Live Preview program, so I've been revisiting the OG Mass Effect on XBONE thanks to the upcoming backwards compatibility feature.

Still my favorite ME game, regardless of all dat jank.

Full-size screen I took last night, game still looks fucking great.

ME1 is still my favorite game, too. The gameplay may not have been as polished as it was in ME2 or ME3, but the story and atmosphere were vastly superior to either of them, IMO. Even though the exploration aspects were limited I never experienced the same awe or sense of scale in the sequels as I did exploring the various uncharted worlds in ME1.

If Andromeda can restore that sense of wonder and exploration to the series, I'll be very happy.

Try that with Garrus and see how good *that* looks. ;)

ME1 is certainly the most repayable of the trilogy, it's just a shame they hadn't quite worked out the combat mechanics yet. Now if they could remake it with something more like ME3's mechanics.... ;)

Pfft, I take the ME jank (and inventory management!) over ME3's polish and lack of true items any day. Even the fucking Mako. ;)

In terms of pure replayability, I'd say ME2 is at least on par with the OG game in that aspect.

I loved the Mako. :ouch:

I actually really liked ME3's approach to leveling and gear modification. I thought it struck a nice balance between ME1's somewhat unwieldy setup and ME2's (almost absurdly) minimalist one.

^ Only if you include the ME2 DLC. IMO the base game feels a little too linear at times, what with the two event gates (Horizon & Collector Ship) prior to the suicide mission.

The weird part is it seems that was a late design decision. There are unused audio files in game which have the likes of Tali and Legion on Horizon. Either they left the decision as to which order the missions would come in until very late in development, of they'd originally planned for a more open experience.

Well it's N7 Day again and they've released this.

If we're to take this as face value seems my prior assumption about the mission to Andromeda departing during or just prior to the Reaper War seems to be panning out, given Shepard's sign-off.

Makes sense. Whole galaxy is under threat, so putting a few thousand of each sentient species into stasis and loading them all on a huge arc for a centuries long trip through dark space would be a viable back-up plan.
It may have even been a thing they were considering anyway and the reaper threat just put it in high gear.

The ship certainly looks huge. Perhaps not quite on the scale of the Citadel but well and away more massive than the Quarrian liveships.

Yeah, this pretty much confirms that your character is a member of a mission sent to colonize the Andromeda galaxy.* Gotta admit it's a pretty clever means of avoiding dealing with the state of the Milky Way post-ME3.

*During the Reaper War, I mean. Not after it.

They look bigger even then the Votan arks from defiance, and those carried millions

^Well the Votan arks didn't house millions, it stored them in cryo. The liveships had to support a living population and grow food for pretty much the entire fleet, which takes up *way* more room.

Can't really judge the scale of this new ship since it could be anything from destroyer or dreadnought sized vessel all the way up to something rivalling the Citadel. I'm inclined to think it's more dreadnought sized and is filled with stasis pods, perhaps with an Asari caretaker crew aided by VIs.
It seems unlikely that they'd have the resources and will to make anything bigger in the gap between ME2 & ME3 and they certainly wouldn't have the resources to spare after the war had begun.

Actually, the structure of it seems kind of reminiscent of the collector's "dark arks", which I always assumed were re-purposed prothean ships. So perhaps this is a prothean ship they discovered and pressed into service? Possibly another attempt to survive into the next cycle by hiding out in dark space, only for some reason it was never launched, or launched but the whole crew died?

They are good assumptions.

My issue with this is how do we get to Andromeda? because as the Reapers state they use the Citadel & the relays to influence the way all species grow in terms of technology so if its a new relay then the Reapers must know also how to get to another galaxy.

I prefer being set after ME3 (the blue ending) we have Reap-Shep rebuilding the relays and this could of been an outcome of that. The Ark bit would be nice but getting to another galaxy via non relay methods seems unlikely given what we know about FTL in the ME universe.

I was hoping it would just be a Lost in Space type scenario about a new tech leaving you stranded and you are both exploring but also looking for a way home.

Interesting theory about a possible Prothean connection. My own personal theory is that construction on this "Ark" was started sometime shortly after Sovereign made his attempt on the Citadel. More then a few of his remains went missing and if the Turians were able to throw together a Thanix from what they found, reverse engineering Reaper FTL engines is not outside the realm of possibilities. So that gives them the better part of 3 years to construct this thing in secret and when the Reapers show up and things really hit the fan on Thessia, they get the final go ahead to launch from the Citadel Council. Tying into what the Asari councilor said in ME3. I also think this ark is pretty huge, kinda a mini Citadel. It would need to be big enough to store thousands of individuals, likely in pods, plus all the equipment needed to start multiple colonies. Things such as food, building materials, fuel, weapons, etc. All taking up a lot of space. Plus, I'm willing to bet this thing acts as a mother ship to its own small fleet of defence/exploration vessels. One of which is what I figure we, as the player will be put in command of.

You don't *need* a relay to get to Andromeda just like the reapers didn't *need* the Citadel or "alpha relay" to return from dark space.
Shipboard FTL drives can do the job albeit at a significantly slower speed. The only real limiting factor in council race technology is one of range, because the way the engines built up an electrostatic charge that will essentially microwave the crew unless it's discharged (generally in a planet's magnetosphere.) This means they have to be careful not to go out too far into unexplored space and known safe discharge sites and re-fueling stations.

Generally intergalactic space is a bit short on planets and stars, so that method is out, however reaper engines being more advanced don't seem to have this problem and can also attain much higher speeds. So if they acquired access to a reaper's drive before the war somehow, then they may have been able to reverse engineer enough of it to at least solve the range problem.

Of course it would still take a lot of helium-3 and eezo, but one would think something like this would be assumed to be a one-way trip, so they at least don't have to worry about saving enough for a return trip.

I was hoping it would just be a Lost in Space type scenario about a new tech leaving you stranded and you are both exploring but also looking for a way home.

Since back when ME3 ended, I've been hoping for a wild west 'Firefly'/'Cowboy Beebop' type setup (though not necessarily including actual space cowboy anachronisms) and so far it looks as though I'll get my wish.

[ETA]
Another possibility occurs: what if that thing is the reaper's darkspace relay being commandeered? Presumably they just left it there unguarded out in the void and if you're going to take a relay to Andromeda, what better one than the one known to link directly to the Citadel *and* capable of an extra-galactic range?

Harbinger: HUMAN.
Player: Just looking for your thoughts on the mission.
Harbinger: YOU CANNOT COMPREHEND MY THOUGHTS.
Player: (Sarcastically) Maybe it would help if you talk slowly.
Harbinger: YOU DARE MOCK A BEING INFINITELY YOUR GREATER?
Player: Jeez, lighten up. If we're going to work together we have to learn to trust one another.
Harbinger: TRUST IS IRRELEVANT. THERE IS ONLY THE MISSION.
Player: Don't you have any friends? Amongst the Reapers, I mean.
Harbinger: EACH OF US IS A NATION. THERE IS NO NEED FOR FRIENDSHIP.
Player: Sounds lonely.
Harbinger: IT WOULD BE IMPOSSIBLE FOR YOUR KIND TO UNDERSTAND.
Player: I'd like to try.
Harbinger: WHY ARE YOU SO INTERESTED IN ME?
Player: Because you fascinate me, Harbie. I've never met a man quite like you.
Harbinger: YOU FASCINATE ME TOO, HUMAN. A REAPER SHOULD NOT THINK THAT WAY, BUT I CANNOT HELP MYSELF.
Player: Maybe we could get a... drink some time.
Harbinger: I WOULD LIKE THAT. BUT I NEED SOME TIME TO PROCESS MY THOUGHTS.
Player: Talk to you later.
