Historic Trek main characters who've yet to appear in modern Trek:

Hey all,

With DIS and PIC wrapped up, LD about to end, and PRO unlikely to be renewed by Netflix, I think it would be a good time to review what primary characters from older Trek have yet to be seen in a modern Trek incarnation.

Going show by show:

TOS:

SNW has provided for recasts of Spock (via DIS), Uhura, Kirk, and Scotty now. In addition, Sulu had a brief cameo in Lower Decks, and Nichelle and Nimoy were featured in a PRO episode using archival footage.

SNW is still ongoing, so we may get more recasting. It seems likely to me we'll get a new McCoy, either in Season 3 or 4, since he was one of the older TOS cast members. We're unlikely to get a recast Chekov though, I think, due to the canonical youth of the character (which is a shame, as the PIC Season 3 voice cameo for Koenig as a descendant doesn't count, IMHO). There's still the possibility of a recast Sulu.

TNG:

With PIC Season 3 turning into a full-on TNG reunion, we've seen every single main cast member save Yar (if you want to count that) appear in something. Otherwise you'd need to go pretty far down the list to find a TNG "regular" who hasn't been revisited.

DS9:

While it hasn't gotten the same love as some of the other series, between Lower Decks and the archival audio used for Odo in PRO, we've covered most of the main cast here.

Ben Sisko has, notably, been absent, which I'm sure is his choice, since he's wanted little to do with Trek since the show's end. It's also unlikely we'll ever see Colm Meaney as O'Brien again. He doesn't seem to actively dislike Trek fandom, but he's done well for himself as an actor and moved on to other things.

I'm sure Cirroc would be up for returning as Jake, though his acting skills have gotten quite rusty, and with LD closing up, the options for a voice cameo have closed.

VOY:

Between Seven on PIC, PRO turning into something of a Voyager sequel, and some cameos on LD, most of the cast has been covered, but not all.

One notable absence is Torres. Roxanne Dawson has pretty much been retired from acting for 20 years, and just works as a director these days, so I'm guessing she won't come back. We won't see Kes again for obvious reasons. That leaves Neelix, who arguably did get a cameo with Very Short Treks (I'm still pissed the kids in PRO didn't stumble upon him, since they were in the right area - but let the man have his happy ending).

ENT:

The seal here is finally broken with T'Pol being in LDS! Obviously there are lots of other cast members who'd love to return in some form (other than Bakula, who seems done). While it's unlikely given the time gap, with SNW still an ongoing show, there's more of a possibility of seeing additional cameos among former cast here than the remaining TNG-era folks.

TOS: I think they'll have every main character from TOS in SNW before it ends, unless it gets cancelled early. How do they work in Chekov? He's a Cadet on a training mission. Or they do a time-skip to the beginning of when TOS would take place, Chekov's there anyway, and there's a Huge Long Thread in the SNW Forum that goes on forever about it... until the mods close it.

TNG: Everyone is covered, including Yar. She appears briefly in archival footage when Data and Lore are having their mental tug-of-war.

DS9: I haven't seen most of LD. So, I can't comment there.

VOY: It would've been nice to see Torres again, but I understand.

ENT: Unless there's time-travel, yeah. I think everyone from ENT would be dead by SNW except T'Pol. Maybe Danubulans have a super-long lifespan, so Phlox could appear. Without time-travel, that's about it.

In short, almost everyone's probably come back who's going to.

I'm going to bet, not by a long shot. These folks have proven originality isn't their strong suit.
They've run out of main characters. Except for SNW, where all the main TOS characters haven't appeared yet, but I expect them to.

If you want to talk about recurring characters, that's different.

Chekov could appear via time travel and/or and alternate reality, maybe even with the original actor if his character is older and/or animated. We could also see him mentored by an SNW original character, which gets him to join Starfleet. If Kelvinverse Pike recruited a delinquent, why can't Prime Pike recruit a wunderkind Chekov?

You're probably right that if they want SNW to backdoor into a TOS reprisal, we'll eventually get everyone recast.

True, I forgot about this. Honestly, the most we could expect, absent alternate universe shenanigans.

I forgot to say that I'm let down that the last episode of LDS had a rando doing VA as Curzon Dax considering it was a chance to give either Terry Farrell or Nicole De Boer a little cameo as Dax, which was passed over entirely.

Quite honestly, if there was going to be a real post-Nemesis show beyond Picard, and it involved legacy characters, having it center on Julian and Ezri would be near the top of my list. Both of them are still youngish, clearly game, and have remained active in acting.

I think TNG's use of Scotty in Relics proves they can come up with a random-ass reason to put just about any ENT cast member into SNW as a guest star if they so desired.

Trip was in a Very Short Trek.

True, I forgot about this. But as I said, I'm not sure the Neelix appearance in the same episode counted either. VST is defined as non-canon, after all.

To take this back exactly one generation, all the TOS main characters, plus Rand, made an appearance in TNG/DS9/VOY.

Kirk: GEN
Spock: TNG
McCoy: TNG
Scotty: TNG, GEN
Chekov: GEN
Sulu: VOY
Rand: VOY

Uhura gets to appear through archival footage in "Trials and Tribble-ations", along with everyone except Sulu and Rand, who were in "Flashback".

And, of course Majel Barrett. Even though Chapel wasn't in those shows, she makes up for it as Luaxana Troi and the ships' computers.

In the interests of original concepts and newer characters, I must abstain from spreading the nostalgia onto newer story chapters. (It's something TNG long ago swore would never happen on their show.)

TNG broke its promises in its pilot, then doubled down on it in episode 2. Get your facts straight at least.

You seem impolitely irritated. I shall strum my Platonian keethret in hopes of soothing the tension I never sought to create.:borg:

Not at all irritated. Merely pointing out the fact that TNG’s supposed mission statement of new ideas and no characters /concepts from TOS lasted about five minutes.

Peace be with you and season’s greetings!

I really expected Picard season 2's Young Guinan to show up in more modern Treks. It was probably a thought in people's heads until that season ended up on everyone's worst ever lists.

Is this true? I know he was a bit strange in the Shatner doc but he also said that he’s been blacklisted and struggled to find work.

Also Sisko would be one of the more difficult characters to bring back for a cameo, unless it was a flashback.
