What are you watching for the first-time?

I watched it as it was airing on AMC. It's my favorite show on television. Especially since it digs underneath the surface of the facade everyone's putting on and exposes all the cracks.

The only thing I don't like, and this isn't the show's fault, is that real world has been making it feel like less and less of a period piece.

I don't know how deep you're in right now, but you're in for quite a ride.

Three episodes in… so in no way deep, but it’s very good so far?

Favourite show on TV? That’s high, high praise, especially coming from a fella such as yourself who knows his TV!

Anyway, back on topic...
I like the 3 Abrams movies, but what I didn't like was how they treated the Enterprise and how things regarding the Enterprise just make zero sense, especially in the 2nd film.

I'm not really a fan, but I do kind of like them as Huge Summer Blockbusters. Since that's what they were going for, Mission Accomplished. Credit where credit's due.

I remember one time -- not on TrekBBS -- where someone who hates the Abrams Films freaked out that they blew up the Enterprise in Beyond. "They destroyed the Enterprise again!!!" I told him straight-out, "I don't give a shit about that Enterprise. If I don't give a shit, then you don't give a shit either, so stop pretending as if you're upset!" Called him right out on it. He'd look for anything and everything to complain about.

Wait 'til you get to the Star Trek mention in one of the later seasons. ;) Five or six? I can't remember now.
Season 5.

As far as Star Trek re-watches, I went through TNG and VOY quickly. But because I have a thread about it, and am writing out my thoughts, I'm going through DS9 much more slowly.

One thing I've discovered: I'm getting more out of it by watching it over an extended period. All the details are worth paying attention to on DS9, because everything comes back.

i don't rewatch shows for the most part, so everything i'm watching is new-to-me.

modern shows: evil, tracker, ncis - origins, matlock reboot, and the Irrational.
older shows: the profiler, la law, moonlighting, homicide life on the streets, suits, buffy, angel, almost done with nypd blue.

i am revisiting tng, silders, x files and quantum leap for the first time since i was a teenager in the 90s. i've only seen half of x files.

recently finished off hill street, burn notice, elementary, white collar, boston legal

still have a little bit of the pretender and castle left but not currently running them.

I'll be revisiting TOS, soon, as part of my franchise rewatch. I've not watched most TOS episodes since before my son was born (he's 8 now), and have not watched the remastered Season 1.

We are not.

I've already addressed this up thread. We have an entire forum dedicated to non-Trek TV and Media. In fact there's an active, long running thread there called "What Are You Watching?"

Please take this discussion there.

Thanks.

In that case, the list shrinks drastically down to:

Star Trek (Season 1)
The Next Generation (Season 4)
Enterprise (Season 4)
Discovery (Season 2)
Short Treks (between S1 and 2)
Lower Decks (Season 1)

At some point, I plan to have a rewatch of the Abrams trilogy too.

I finally started to watch SNW. I am still not a fan of the overall production design that still follows the routes of Abrams's 2009 movie. Call me crazy, but I am a big fan of carpets on spaceships (like Picard) :D But in general, it looks too shiny, too cold, too forced designed. Apart from that I am surprised. Finally, a new Star Trek show with likable characters, decent drama without main characters winning in every episode, a good portion of dry humor and self-irony without forced annoying curly side characters and a more episodical and spacy adventure. I see how the creators follow an approach to pay tribute to TOS while creating a modern show that attracts a wider range of viewers. I am an incorrigible 90sTrek child but in view of the fact that the world is developing further, I find this very watchable.

BTW. They are using the LCARS sounds from the TNG movies and Voyager, right? Not matching the era but I like this nevertheless.

During the last three years or so, my husband and I have been rewatching and introducing our son to Trek.

We started with TNG, a smart choice as it turned out. Then we went on to DS9 and VGR with the original broadcast overlaps of episodes. About halfway through VGR we also started watching TOS. By now our son was enough of a Trekkie that he was willing to watch the show that started the whole thing. After TOS we watched Star Trek Continues, which our son judged to be "better than any TOS episode." My husband and I wouldn't go quite that far even if we enjoy the stories, and we agree that the best of STC is certainly better than most of TOS.

After that we watched TAS, it was the first time for all of us. The best of that was very good but the worst was... the worst.

Now we're about halfway through season 2 of PIC, which we're enjoying even if all three of us detest Q.

I'd really like to see SNW but it isn't available on any of the streaming services we subscribe to currently.

I'm watching TNG for the first time. So far I had only watched TOS/TAS/the movies. Currently at the end of season 1 and enjoying it (I understand it gets even better later). Just watched "Skin of Evil". 😢

Sounds like you're a TOS guy, like me. Season 1 and 2, and part of 3 even, still feel like TOS, and has some of that DNA. It morphs into something completely different by Season 4, and I find it unwatchable. The fun factor of the early seasons is lost. The music changes, the plot focus changes. I highly disagree that it gets "better." Let me know if you notice the same thing. Don't want to say more since you haven't seen anything yet. lol.

I noticed some of the TOS feel in this first season, but more in the sense of revised plots (like "Datalore" reminded me a lot to "The Enemy Within"). Though I'm liking it precisely bc it's a very different series: new cast (ensemble rather than focused on three main characters), new world, new concepts... So I can treat it as a different thing altogether.
On the other hand, I couldn't watch more than five minutes of the Abrams movies bc it was the TOS characters but... not really. I just couldn't stop thinking "that's not Kirk! that's not Bones!". So that didn't work for me. But with TNG this didn't happen, so I could enjoy it on its own terms.
I'll let you know how it goes from here on...

I stopped my first rewatch since childhood mid season 4. The first couple seasons reminded me that I honestly had a love for the show; the later seasons were a firm reminder of exactly why I have not been back.

The Abrams movies turned me off completely, and it was finding Star Trek Continues that kind of brought me back into the fold. Late TNG and Generations drove me away for a couple decades.

I’m watching DS9 for the first time straight through. Somehow I’ve only ever watched it in bits. The most consecutively I’ve watched it is Seasons 4 through 7.

I plan on watching DS9 soon. I've seen Trials and Tribble-ations before but I have yet to actually watch the series.

Interesting, I’m in the camp that actually finds s1-3 of TNG its peak in a way…yes, even the first season minus 3-4 real clunkers. It’s around the fourth season that it starts to get really dull for me. The whole tone of the show changes and nowhere is this more noticeable than the shift in music. It becomes kind of…beige. I don’t like feeling this way about the show, but by the end of its run it was running on fumes.
