Giving STO Another Try

If you think the New Romulus stuff is a slog now, you used to have to unlock Reputation tiers to access the different missions...

I'm sure I remember that from when I played it on console a few years back. The missions also appear to be a bit different order wise (could just be my memory though).

I found the Voyager season to be the most sloggish. And they kept adding on to it! The Kobali/Vaadwahr missions were particularly putrid. I honestly wished both species would kill each other off and leave me out of it!

Yes, luckily that bit is now relegated to side missions and you don't need to level up to access the storyline - used to be you were stuck doing patrols until you met the level requirement for the next actual story bit.

They kind of made the same mistake with the J'ula arc by making a lot of the "missions" into "play this patrol".

Played Firewall last night - not a bad mission though forcing another "team up with the villain" thing is getting tedious. When Leeta asked "do I sound like that?" when Mirror Kuumarke issued a villainous threat, I wanted to reply with "to be fair, you both sound like Sela, and it was old when she did it".

Wonder why they didn't include Attack on Terok Nor in the TFOs? Is it bugged or failable? Everything they've used seems very ground-heavy (even Firewall is probably 70-80% ground)...
At least Chase Masterson is a better voiceover actress then Denise Crosby. That said the way she pronounced the name "Kumarke" throughout the mission was honestly weird. It's like she added a accent that wasn't necessary, just for the name.

Gah, I'm levelling a temporal agent and want to do the whole story arc, but just ran into that damn annoying bug in the New Romulus mission "The Power Source" - if you wipe whilst fighting the Tholian Captain at the end, he falls through the floor and unless you are very lucky with where that happens, thus becomes untargetable when you respawn. If you ARE lucky, you can use mortars/turrets to hit him, or aim mode.

Beaming out and back resets the whole instance, so you have to slog through it again.

I've been really looking for that one! Got the Voyager interiors specifically to have that as my bridge when I come to play through it

Having made a TOS era character, I'd forgotten just how fun the Agents of Yesterday stuff is. As a huge TOS fan I really wish they'd add more stuff set in that era. I wish there was a way of properly using the original Constitution class after you get back, it's just not powerful enough for most of the enemies. Plan on playing through the Disco intro missions as well.

I enjoyed the TOS missions too. I agree they were some of the best. Unfortunately, my TOS character kind of languished, as I had focused 95% of my efforts and leveling up my first TNG-era character.

It's not bugged or failable, it's just... very tedious. And I say that as someone who enjoys ground combat. I think it might also use the old DS9 assets? So it probably doesn't hold up to their modern standards, and their desire to show off the shiny new 25th century interiors (which do look really good!).

But yeah, the gameplay is generally annoying, and can take a long time if you have players who don't fully understand the final boss battle. ......actually, thinking about it, it is "failable" in the sense that I have had one or two times where people got frustrated and just left, leaving it essentially unwinnable for the remaining few. There's also one section where one person on the team has to find the correct sequence to use some terminals in, and only once have I seen it happen without the team just giving up and waiting out the minutes-long timer while fending off waves of Terran grenadiers. It could be nifty/fun, and there's some neat ideas, but it's implemented poorly. At least it doesn't fall too far into requiring teamwork, and it can still be done by casual teams, unlike Khitomer in Stasis (which is loads of fun, but so different from the usual "run and pew pew and win and that's it" TFOs that it can often be failed or take an hour with a pick up group).

It really is fantastic. But they do have a T6 TOS Constitution, which is viable. There's also a normal T2 (or T1?) which obviously doesn't work... I'm not sure how I got the T6 connie, but I assume it costs money or was from a giveaway (I haven't purchased any of the recent legendary or whatever bundles that included it).

Same here really, on console my TOS character was my main one but on PC I didn't start as one because I wanted to take advantage of my liberated Borg bonus as part of the lifetime sub. Made my TOS character a Vulcan Science Officer to make him a bit different from my main character but I wish that progress transferred between characters. It is neat how the beaming up animations are different though.

Ah! Didn't know that.

There are four versions of the TOS Starship/Constitution available at Tier 6:

The temporal T6 Connie (with a TOS era skin as well as a TMP skin) which is a lockbox ship.

The Legendary T6 Connie (with a TOS and "Menagerie/The Cage" era skin as well as a TMP skin) which was part of the 10 ship bund le first sold during STOs 10th anniversary.
^^^
The bundle isn't currently available on the c-store but they do bring it back for a limited time once or twice a year. The version of the Connie in that bundle is also an account unlock and can be claimed by any of your characters on the account.

The Kelvin era 1701 Constitution class (many players i in game refer to it as the "Konnie") - and it comes with the original ST2009 skin as well as the skin from Star Trek Beyond which is also a lockbox ship.

The Star Trek Discovery version of the 1701 USS Enterprise commanded by Captain Christopher Pike during ST: D's second season (many players refer to it as the "Disco Connie" or the "Donie" in game.) It has the skin as seen in Star Trek Discovery; but also has options for the nacelle struts (you can make them straight and get rid of the 'slit' in the middle;; and it also has warp nacelles with an antenna on the front to make it even more like pikes ship from the original TOS pilot And it's also a lockbox ship.

All the lock box versions of the Connie are currently available via the Infinity lock box; and when you open the ship on a character, it's tied specifically to that character; and if you delete it from the character, you cannot reclaim it (like any other lock box ship in the game).

That said it's probably cheaper if you just sell master keys on the exchange and buy one for EC off the exchange.

Playing their lock box lottery is just a exercise in frustration for most people trying to get a certain ship from it.

If you can settle for a TOS-era ship, the Ranger-Class is viable if you buy the T6 Paladin and unlock the TOS skin. Sadly, during the recent Temporal Recruitment re-run, I missed that you could get the Pally (and a load of extra TOS stuff) in the TOS bundle for 1400 ZEN (instead of the discounted 2500 Zen I paid) and then get the discounted 1400 Zen skin... so I was out of pocket to the tune of 1100 Zen...

I think the Ranger and the Gemini are the best-looking TOS ships other than the Connie, but I was bored of slow cruisers so went for the Ranger over the Gemmie.

New TFO is nice in terms of the idea and setting (and the cat mechanism is fun! pspsps) but GOD it's a slog. The area of the candles isn't extensive enough given that the skeletons don't taunt very well and will often just stand still. Then, in the final fight, there's very little time to find which Devidian "device" is available to sabotage before the time limit expires.

Digging this one up a bit...

12th Anniversary release today - some updated ships, a new episode in the latest Mirror Universe arc and a new TFO - plus: Admiral Janeway!

Seems like she's also being retroactively included in the older Delta Quadrant missions - I presume as the mission contact rather than in the missions themselves. I'm still playing myself, but anyone likely to revisit with this news?

I would but I no longer Own a pc that can play it. Looks fun though. At least it’s not another Discovery story

Not yet. I'm patching at the moment. I might with one of my other toons. It's been a few months since I actively did an episode or such. I might at some stage.

Just saw a lot of free stuff to grab for the 12th anni from the STO in game store, a free T5/T6 token, free ship and cap upgrade tokens, and some free uniforms.......my fave price. ha

I’ve been out a couple of years this time, but it’s largely a solo experience with some chat for me… thinking of skipping ahead to catch the Janeway stuff before I go back to the DS9 stuff.
My laptop creaks running it now though.

The STO social media accounts have been doing a countdown to Thursday, at the same time Picard S2 premiers

TrekCore seems to know what it is, so I don't think it's a new ship or Z-Store thing, it's something with press coverage.
