Den of Geek review of Season 3

Den of Geek has a preview of the upcoming season 3. They have lots of good things to say about it.

With unabashed nostalgia and familiar Trekkie aesthetics, Star Trek: Picard Season three is the 1990s sequel series fans have been waiting for. But is this really the last ride for the TNG gang?

So what is Picard season three? A Next Generation reunion? A backdoor pilot to another Star Trek series? A 10-hour-long TNG feature film? A love letter to fans of ’90s Trek? The answer is all of these things, and something new, too. At New York Comic Con in 2022, Patrick Stewart said that the journey that concludes in season three has left him “fulfilled way beyond anything that I had imagined.” And when fans see it, they will almost certainly feel fulfilled in a way they may not have imagined, either.

There are no spoilers but some general info about what to expect:

I guess that's the Titan display, but why are parts blue?

Any other new pictures in the magazine?

It's a reflection

"This is why the new season will not only feel different but look and sound different from the earlier seasons of Picard. “I love the old Next Gen font. I’ve missed titles on episodes and seeing them and going, ‘hmm, I wonder what that means…?’ And the music was extraordinarily important to me.”"

Title Cards? Hm, not sure how I feel about that.

"In fact, huge events from the story of Deep Space Nine play a big part in the plot, not just because Worf (Michael Dorn) has returned. “I think that it’s important to Deep Space Nine fans to feel seen,” Matalas says."

Now that is interesting

Pure speculation but what if one of the off screen diplomatic missions of the Enterprise E during the Dominion War was to Vadic's planet. Vadic welcomed Picard's help but then when the Enterprise left, the Dominion brutally retaliated against Vadic's people. Vadic survives the Dominion attack and blames Picard for "abandoning" them to the Dominion. This could explain how the story ties in to DS9 while also providing a good motive to the villain and why she hates Picard.

That would be interesting.

I never thought TNG needed a send-off. It's been cool to have them back in action though it's sad that this whole streaming deal wasn't around 20 years ago when we could have gotten TOS old timers involved again. I read that Frakes says that S3 is not necessarily the end of them, but honestly I think it's time. Looking forward to the return of Worf most of all. Get some REAL Klingons back on Star Trek.

IMO, All Good Things was a great finale to TNG. I think one reason some fans may think TNG needs a send-off is because of how disappointing Nemesis was, especially in contrast to the wonderful send-off the TOS cast got in The Undiscovered Country.

I am excited that S3 sounds like it will be a great send-off for TNG. Honestly, I am just glad we are getting more with the TNG cast because I love the characters. But I wish S3 had been S1. Just make Picard a one season show that ties up TNG in a nice bow with a nice send-off. That would have been great. I worry that even if S3 is great, it will still be tainted from the bad first two seasons. Or maybe fans will forget S1 and S2 if S3 is so good?

This.

In 1994, we all knew TNG was going into movies. So we knew "All Good Things" wasn't The End, as in the final time we'd see this crew. That's made it different from every other Star Trek series finale.

Whereas with Nemesis in 2002, the writing was on the wall, so it did look like The End. And for 20 years, it was. We didn't expect to see them again, until Picard came along. So this is a chance to right the wrong that was NEM.

Personally, I treat S1 and 2 as distinct, almost like films in a way. Do they inform the next? Eh, kind of. But, they are very much standalone in my attitude towards them. So, if I regard S1 well, while S2 lesser, S3 is completely new to me because it has that standalone feel.

So, for me, no; S3 lives or dies by its own merits, and not by anything else.

I don't want S1 and S2 forgotten per se. The writing was a whole lot of not great, but I liked some of the world building, and Raffi, Elnor and Executive Director Hugh are my favorite characters of the modern Trek era. I'm just hoping S3 gets its act together enough that TBTB decide it's worth using as a launch point for another series or two.
