Celebrating SNW Production Design

SNW has fantastic set design and costuming. I'm lukewarm on the ship exterior.
I'll admit, I still wish they had the warp core design from ITD.

That thing screamed power. :P.
Might be because it was a real fusion reactor:lol:

Engineering in SNW looks great, but I hate that yellow intermix chamber thing. It doesn't look impressive enough, and the enormous pipe cathedral is apparently the deflector machinery and not even the warp drive:shrug:

pipe cathedral is labelled as power conduits in the concept art, with lines coming up from them going through the neck and into the saucer representing the electro plasma system, they're not part of the deflector.

Well, the sideways irregular hexagons remind me of the Vulcan gong and the three elements found in the Romulan symbol in TOS The Enterprise Incident:

Good catch! I had noticed that they used the hexagon on a lot on Vulcan designs (the chimes and mirror in Spock’s quarters come to mind), but I hadn’t realize it was a thing on the original Romulan ship as well. Still I wonder if there’s any other sort of inspiration for the wall tiles in the rec room.

By the way, I hadn’t realized this before, but a version of the tiles (in a somewhat different arrangement) were actually already present before they redecorated the rec room for season two’s “Charades”, where they also added the bar.

While I like the bar and the overall more cozy feel of the new rec room, I think the new version also looks way tighter and a little less elegant. I also miss the large front-facing windows. I think what would have been cooler is keep the larger first version of the set and only added the bar.

I think it looks significantly more impressive in this effects sequence that — as far as I remember — wasn’t actually used on the show proper, but probably just a proof-of-concept of sorts …

It was used in the first episode.
Damn, you are right! Totally missed that when I rewatched the episode just last week. Well, I’m glad it got used, because it looks pretty cool. :)

By the way, do you know if the row of large windows in the first rec room set were the volumetric screen or an actual physical part of the set?

EDIT: This seems to confirm the AR wall was used for the mess hall. It’s not clear, though, if it’s just for the stars or the entire wall of windows. Makes sense if it’s the entire wall, though. Because that might explain why they decided to redesign it without them.

This makes we wonder if the area with the hexagonal wall decoration was also just part of the AR wall projection. Would be interesting, because these elements look like an actual physical set when they re-appeared on the updated version of the set.

Looking at the engineering concepts above, it occurs to me that the vertical warp core design might have been intended as a call back to the prototype "intermix chamber" (or "engineering core") we saw in TAS.

@TIN_MAN Good eye. I never realized that the "back" wall was actually looking forward; I thought it was looking aft.
Thanks, I wonder if they were trying to rationalize the wonkyness that was going on at the end of "Day of the Dove" where the only way to make any sense of the combination of interior and exterior arrangement in the original non-remastered version is to assume that the tube chamber faces toward the sensor/deflector dish?
