Dramedy: why is this a thing? (TV shows)

I'm watching TNG S4-7 for the first time since I was a kid, so it's hard for me to watch The Orville. I'm asking myself, why watch the parody when I can watch the real thing? If you can answer this, I would love to read your answer.

At times the parody is better than the source material.....sometimes only slightly (SCREAM improving on HALLOWEEN) and sometimes it's arguably much better (ORVILLE surpassing TNG).

I always thought MASH was a sitcom? What makes it a dramedy? I've never watched more than a few minutes of the show.

It had the 30-minute format and it was funnier at first. It got more serious from the middle of the first year on. You're missing too much.

I question why dramedy exists, I think it's dumb, but I am not suggesting it shouldn't exist.

I genuinely think dramedy is a horrible artform, granted with some exceptions. I don't get why it sells as a genre.

Entertainment. Unpredictability. Some of which are in the exceptions you like. How horrible can that truly be?

Neither. I'd prefer serious and intelligent dramatic TV (any genre) that's deep, emotional, high stakes, good stories, good characters. Do you count House as "dramedy?"

Just sayin' ... the networks prefer cheap and quick now.

Not a big fan of dramedy either. Monk was just about the only one that worked, and that was due to the cast and writing.

Agreed. For me it was the Monk and Sharona duo that made it work, and I loved the episode where her kid Benji had to fill in for mom in the vacation episode.

Simple question:

The general public would say the former. They probably have for decades. But for those who have to find meaning, the answer is clear. Until they stoop to do a clip-show at least.

If it has to be between the two of them, I'd definitely say Dramedy. At least one's truthful about what it is is, meanwhile the other tries to pass itself off as something it isn't.
