Roswell (1999-02) Any fans?

I've seen clips of Grey's Anatomy, but I never watched it, not a hospital drama guy. I only watched House, because I kept seeing House & Wilson clips on YouTube, so I wanted to see more. I figured I'd watch maybe 5 episodes, get my House & Wilson fix, and bail. I ended up watching the entire series.

Lost, I didn't have any in Gilligan's Island, but serious, and with TXF-grade mysteriousness. I did love Fringe, found it on Netflix randomly back in the mid mid to late 20-10's and ended up watching the entire series.
I'm not telling you to watch these shows, although LOST is one of my favorite of all time; rather I'm just finding it odd that you've never seen these people in there biggest roles.

I know, I was just telling why I don't like them and then sharing similar shows I do like. :) I've never been one to watch popular shows, I just watch what I like. Have you seen House or Fringe? A friend wants me to watch Lost. What's the appeal? Cast Away, the TV show, but a whole group of people?

It is a sci-fi/fantasy show. Fringe I watched until I moved to a country where it didn't air. House. My wife watched the whole series back around 2012. It gave me nightmares in the same way Grays Anatomy gives me nightmares. Man goes to a doctor because he burned his hand (or something similar) and dies by the end of the episode

I believe Fringe was made by the same people who worked on Lost, so I've thought about giving the opening episodes. How good is the first season? I watched House across 2022 into early 23, I think, maybe 23 into 24? Anyway, I took my time and watched the 8-season series over about a year's time and loved every episode. It's now one of my favorite shows right up there with Star Trek, Stargate, Roswell, Fringe, and other great series. Fringe, if you ever get a chance to stream the series, I strongly recommend it.

On the Roswell front, did you try the new reboot show made for The CW?

I'd put the first season of Lost right up there as one of the best first seasons of any TV show ever. The sci-fi elements start out a little more subtle, but by the end it's full on blatant in your face sci-fi.
Have you watched Once Upon a Time? it's great and has Emily de Ravin in a big role/

I did watch the reboot show--which I felt was more of a sequel to the books than the series as it seemed to ignore the television show's finale. Nor do the characters ages match the series. For the most part I enjoyed.

It was also part of the "Dare to Defy" brand of the CW, and one of the few diversity choices I disagreed with and I'm not sure why other than Michael's bisexuality just didn't seem to add anything to the character other than as a plot device.

At some point, I do need to watch the end of Fringe. I think the last episode I saw was the finale where
Peter disappeared
.

As for Once Upon a Time, it was on when I wasn't able to watch a lot of television due to being overseas. Didn't know Emilie was on it. Along with Fringe, Have, Under the Dome, Mad Men, The Good Place and a few other series I started but didn't finish, it is on a watchlist I will probably never get to.

Oh, whenever you have the chance of watching it: Do it. It's a great show - not that great looking, 'cause when they're in the enchanted forest, one clearly sees the green-screen sometimes (mostly in Reginas castle), but the story is awesome and the characters are likeable. Yeah, eben the baddies.

Once Upon a Time had a lot of the same Production staff as LOST, IIRC. So they were fine bringing back actors too

I loved the first two seasons but thought the third season was absolutely awful. Even as a teenager I recognized the massive drop in quality.

I guess I'll have to give Lost a go. hah OUaT, nope, too "ABC" for my tastes.

The show is a sequel to neither. 20th Century Fox owns the rights to the original show, WB and UPN were simply the broadcasters. The new show couldn't be a sequel or remake, so it had to be a 2nd adaptation of the books, but retooled to fit in with the other dark CW shows.

That was the S3 finale. The show continued for two more seasons.

What was so bad about S3?

Too ABC? If you're a Disney fan at all, then I'd move it up to a must watch. For the first few seasons they kind of did their own versions of the fairy tale characters, but after a while they pretty much just did direct adaptations of the Disney characters, and even included characters created by Disney like the casts of Frozen and Brave.

I pay no attention to Disney and honestly couldn't tell you what is and is not a Disney production. I have Disney+ only because it's bundled with Hulu and allows me to watch the MCU stuff I don't have on disc, which is a lot, plus whatever I might stumble across that interests me. I've enjoyed shows from CBS and NBC, but ABC.... even as a kid, I just never really watched ABC shows except for those Friday night sitcoms. Is OUaT friendly to viewers who may not be knowledgeable to the bulk of what the show is based on? I've never been one for fairytales, even as a kid. The show looks good, but I fear it would be constantly leaving me in the dark. :vulcan:

This is where I wax nostalgic about writing the very first ROSWELL tie-in novel back in the day. (As opposed to the original novels that inspired the tv show.). I would've liked to have written more of them, but, honestly, STAR TREK novels paid better.

And, yes, I last saw de Ravin as "Belle" on ONCE UPON A TIME.

Wait, you wrote one of the tie-in novels? Seriously? What was that like, and what did you think of the series overall? Loose Ends (your book), No Good Deed, Little Green Men all take place early on in the series, yes? I believe there were 4 more set between S2 and S3 and 4 more following the series, yes?

That was a long time ago, but I remember the editor asked me for four ideas and, to my amusement, chose the least science-fictional one. I basically brought back the guy who shot Maria in the first episode, and then was never mentioned again. Hence, my title: Loose Ends.

Bizarrely, it was published in France as The Assassins Never Forget. Come again?

As for the show, I was definitely a fan of the original series. Never got around to watching the reboot.

Like I said, I was hoping to write more ROSWELL books, but then my Star Trek editor offered me a three-book deal for more money, so I had to pass on any future ROSWELL books. (I vaguely remember that I had an idea involving chupcabras, which turned out to be some sort of alien hybrid or something.)

I may have to track down those old Roswell books and give them a go, only 11 tops.
Do you remember what your other 3 ideas were to pitch for a Roswell novel?
The new show, they made far too many changes. Basically, they kept the names, genders, and basic descripts of characters, and set it in Roswell, NM; and then just did something entirely different.

Just the chupabra idea. And maybe some sort of time-travel story?

But I remember they were all more SF-oriented than LOOSE ENDS, which I thought was funny because they approached me in the first place because I was a Star Trek writer who, presumably, knew how to write SF.

Then they went with the story about a fugitive gunman. :)

I also remember that, because of a super-tight deadline, I had to write that book in a month!

Okay, I said to me "No, you're not gonna ask this", but... sorry, Mr. Cox, I can't help myself: As a person, who wants to be an author, I have to ask this question: How did you land this "Roswell tie-in-novel" gig? Do you need to have your fair share of non-tv-show-related-publications? Can you just apply for it? And does this work in Star Trek, too?

And Belle was a cool role, now wasn't she? The chemistry between her and Rumple/the Croc / the Dark One / Renard was good, at least I thought that.
