Why can't the augments sew?

If the augments are so advanced, why are all of their clothes ratty and torn. I understand the part about being alone on whatever planet for years waiting for Soong to return, but you think one of them would at least have learned how to sew.
btw.. first time posting, but have been reading site for years.

Pick an explanation:

1. It's what all the cool kids are doing in the 22nd century.

2. Their arrogance was so great that they thought their skin offered just as much protection as the garments.

3. They wanted to spend their time doing something else. Honestly, who wants to use the superior intellect on menial chores?

But if Soong was taken away when they were merely children, then how did the Augment's clothes grow to fit them as adults? They must've known how to sew.

Sewing is for the weak.
 Must be why I'm good at it!

I think the Augments couldn't sew because...er, because...well, because the plot said so.

You're just going to have to accept this is one of those artificially-inserted plot devices. I mean, if it weren't because of the Augments desperate need for new clothing they wouldn't have been so desperate to leave their planet.

so if soong had raised them with a better fashion sense and a means to express it things would have turned out so differently

More importantly - why were their outer garments torn & distressed to hell while their undies were freshly store-bought?

And, really, I'm tryin' not to think about Soong raisin' 'em, 'cause that raises the even bigger issue of "incest". Forget the clothes - why were two of 'em sleepin' together and then both callin' Brent Spiner "Daddy"?

Why do think they were ripped? Haven't you ever seen the Incredible Hulk?

From a biological perspective the Augments were a `family` merely because they grew up together (and because Soong wanted them to feel like they had one for whatever reasons).
Genetically speaking, the Augments did not have a same set of parents.

Besides, incest is a culturally made up term and looked at mostly with distaste because it was labeled as such by society.
You have real life examples in which siblings have felt both sexual and emotional attraction towards one another ... or towards their parents ... and vice versa in numerous combinations.
Apart from it being 'distasteful' from societies perspective, it's hardly unnatural.
It may not be what usually happens, but it happens.

In the case of Augments, apart from being of the same race, to my knowledge they didn't have a same set of parents.

And to address the issue of the Augments not knowing to sew.
They probably had to learn on their own through improvisation as they were growing up.
Plus we don't know what circumstances they faced before we saw them on screen (which might explain their garments).

They were after all genetically enhanced humans, and were able to adapt to various environments ... so the garments were not a top priority for survival.

^Khan did dress like a bad ass in TOS. I don't have an answer for this question. I just thought it was a really good question. When I first read it I laughed out loud! Right on waytaay!

Because clothes don't make the man, the man makes the clothes. Since they had never been to Earth, or a part of Earth culture, they wouldn't know how trashy they looked. Khan was part of a faction that tried to conquer Earth and thought of themselves as royalty, with a right to rule the lessor humans. He must have wanted to look the part.

Besides, this group was a bunch of separatists, with its own rules and identity. The Augments were extraordinarily strong, supremely intelligent and equally arrogant. Their small band would have never considered important what outsiders thought of their clothing.

It's not important. They're devoting their energies to becoming immensely powerful and starting wars and scheming and stealing and killing people. The rags they're wearing will do fine for now, focusing on sewing at a time like this would make them less than superhuman.

As, for that matter, did their puerile power struggles.

thanks shatastophic(sp?)...
for some reason their torn clothes really took me out of the episode. Al of the crazy non-sensical technobabble on the trek and it's the wardrobe that make me lose my suspension of disbelief.

What can I say? The creators wanted to remind people of THE WRATH OF KHAN. End of story. Screw logic.
