Both the Orville and Lower Decks are comedic takes on Star Trek, one a parody of the franchise, the other a comedic spin off series. Which do you think is better, Lower Decks or the Orville?

To be honest, I'm a little ambivalent on bringing The Orville into the discussion here, because we've had some bad experiences in the past with people getting into unnecessarily heated discussion about how much better The Orville was and I wouldn't want to go there again. I'm willing to see how this one goes, however. Everyone be advised to keep it civil, though.

For me personally, I don't feel the need to compare the two shows, to be honest, because I think they are actually trying to do different things. I'm enjoying both, but I like Lower Decks a little more, just because it's set in the Trek universe, I guess.

I like both, but here I'm gonna point out that Lower Decks' humour has never been as "problematic" as The Orville's, particularly everyone laughing off the blue guy's use of pheromones.

Reactions: Sci
Orville had an uncomfortable humorousness which got a little downplayed as it went on, presumably as it settled in.

I may or may not bother with season three - I've found it somewhat annoying despite simultaneously liking it some things about it. I'm pretty ambivalent overall.

Lower Decks - I'm already on record as absolutely hating it and not even cracking a smile.

I'll vote Orville. And at least it's live action !

The thing about Orville's first season was that MacFarlane pretty much had to make it the show Fox wanted instead of what he wanted, and Fox basically wanted Family Guy in space. The second season was, and presumably the third season will be, more the kind of show MacFarlane wanted to do all along.

It seems like they both had a similar amount of time to bed in, and both had a really good second season.

I only recently got into The Orville via Disney+, so I'm late to the party, but they're both fun shows. The Orville has come into its own expanding the universe it created, whilst often having homages to Star Trek. The one advantage that Lower Decks has is that it's an actual part of Star Trek. ;)

That's what she said.

Lower Decks.

Its a good series overall but the Orville, uh, gets uncomfortable in places. Especially with Mercer and his girlfriend. Plus the whole consent handling in the Derullo episode.

I think I am going with Lower Decks.

I've seen both seasons of the Orville, and I enjoyed it. I wouldn't go so far as to say I'm a huge fan of it, but I appreciate what they're doing.

I would add the option "like them equally" to the poll.
=========================

Lower Decks hands down.

  • Better writing
  • Much more interesting stories
  • Better/ more sympathetic characters
  • Better (voice) actors
  • No sloppy copy-paste scripts from classic Trek
  • No prevalence of tales about romantic relationships
  • Better humour
  • New perspective - lower vs upper decks
  • Better art design
  • Better SFX - as far as one can generally compare and in their respective fields; top-tier animation vs low-grade live-action, love how they combine 2D and 3D

They're both about equal to me. Mildly amusing non-must-watch-TV that is entertaining enough for me to go back to, but not enough for me to care much about.
