Another star trek live action show, another hype, another good will fans may have, until something goes wrong. however I am more of a realist. After Discovery and Picard, I doubt SNW can be great.

While I will at least see some of the first few episodes of the show and always read fan discussion. I think my overall expectation is low. I do expect the show to follow the generic quality of picard and discovery because it is the same writers and show runners on the same streaming service and Alex Kurtzman record poor. The only thing he has ever done that got acclaim was Star Trek 09 and even that, the writing was not the best. The cast and JJ Abrams direction and production is what made that film exceptional.

I dont expect SNW to be high quality with artistic acclaim, like the Expanse or TNG and i dont think the show will be episodic either, maybe some first few episodes than the last 5 episodes will be about saving the universe from a big threat. I feel this is the easiest prediction because that is Kurtzman formula, he is been trying to make star trek like MCU for a long time and I think he will try it here again in SNW.

I expect this show to be CW level kind of show in quality, which is what discovery is, infact I will even say some CW season 1 shows are better than discovery. Superman & Lois 2021 from what I know is a better series than Discovery and Picard.

However not all of this is bad, since i still can watch a generic written shows if the characters are likeable enough, this is the reason I sopped watching discovery because i could not stand any of the characters and I felt the show just had an emptiness.

So what are your expectations and prediction?

anyone who has been watching tv shows for decades know, it is easy to predict if you think a show will be good or not.

I think it will be like Dave Filoni's Star Wars shows or Disney Plus Marvel shows.
I don't have any plans to watch it but if I see some clips on Youtube that are good I'm prepared to change my mind.

I'm expecting a good sci-fi adventure show with a minor amount of fan service that is character-based, engaging, and fun to watch.

Basically, I'm expecting DSC S2's "New Eden" or S1's "Magic to Make the Sanest Man..." every week.

It's just that simple.

I expect to be entertained, but I don't expect it to be one of the great TV shows. I don't expect it to be better than TNG or DS9. I'm hoping for an entertaining, well written with interesting stories, well acted, and occasionally fun show with good characters

I’m just hoping it will be fun and diverting. I don’t lumber shows with massive expectations, but prefer to just take them as they come. Worst case scenario? Like Voyager and Enterprise I’ll be disappointed and quit watching. But given how much other Trek is on, that’s no biggie.

One expectation I do have: a vocal minority (?)of fans will hate it and find all kinds of things to complain about. Ive actually come to dislike fans—not just Trek fans, but fans in general. They have a gift for sucking the joy out of the things they supposedly love under the weight of expectation and entitlement. I’m also certain that the very same people who have been complaining about serialised arcs and screaming for an episodic format will end up decrying the show as TOO EPISODIC. So, yeah, I’m expecting the show will be pretty good, but that it will divide fans, like everything does.

I'm expecting to enjoy it, and to be only moderately annoyed by certain decisions made by production.

If it turns out to be my fave of the current series, that'd be awesome. And not a hugely high bar to get over either, so fingers crossed.

It's supposed to be Trek in an episodic format, which will hopefully discourage the grim nihilism of some of the serialized shows. I expect it will be darker; everything is. Less hope and idealism, because those are the times we live in. But maybe it will still at least try to be fun some of the time. There's a reason why "Lower Decks" is considered by many to be the best Trek going today.

That it will be good and fun.

It's not likely to be the smartest, most innovative or even most entertaining of this kind of show currently being made, though. Those days are far in the past for Star Trek. I don't even expect that of an old franchise product, any more.

And people overestimate the "acclaim" TNG achieved. Fans eventually loved it. The rest of the world...liked it. It was arguably something of a hit, albeit one that didn't pull network-worthy numbers most weeks (at a time when such things still mattered). But Trekkies can still cite the several prestige awards that it received - or was nominated for - over the years, which within the context of the industry makes it a noteworthy series in its day but never "Emmy-worthy for Best Drama series."

The only version of Trek that's ever had a lasting influence on the medium is the one that couldn't keep its head above water and got cancelled as a failure after three years.

I expect it will be compared endlessly to previous Trek, spurring a great many Internet posts about the good ol' days and "Not my Trek!"

I don't think hoping it will be "better than TNG" is a high bar to leap. TNG had some absolutely brilliant episodes...but the bulk of it was moderately entertaining yet mundane fare. Some of it was absolutely fucking boring as sin.

I expect SNW will have it's strengths and weaknesses....but I very much doubt one of those weaknesses will be "it's boring as fuck."

If it has the energy, creativity and wit of TOS with the character expansiveness of DS9, it will be doing pretty good.

We get a show like this almost every decade. In the '60s, it was TOS. In the '80s, it was TNG. In the '90s, it was VOY. In the '00s, it was the first two seasons of ENT. That's 19 seasons of episodic Trek "boldly going where no one has gone before."

SNW will be the 20th Season of this type of live-action episodic Star Trek. I'm expecting a lot of "Haven't I seen this before?", but that's not a problem. You can't be first, but you can be next. I'm not looking for originality, I'm looking for how well it's executed. If they do it well, if I like the angle they tackle it from, I'll be happy. If I like the characters, I'll be happy.

Two of the first five episode descriptions sound like earlier episodes, two sound like typical fare, and one sounds like, "I really want to see this one!"

So my realistic expectations? I'm not expecting the world to be shattered. I'm expecting I'll like what they do and they'll accomplish what they set out to do.

And I feel, this has been the flaw of new trek, even some aspect of the JJ movies. Star Trek into darkness was entertaining but I think it was bad star trek compared to the best of star trek we have had.

a lot of the time, a film or tv show being entertaining is just not enough for star trek, because star trek is meant to be deeper, more intellectual , so even when trek is entertaining, that has never held too much ground, which is why many trek fans find it very easy to retaliate, rebel and start hating on new trek, because they just dont want to be entertained, they want something of more deeper substance with star trek.

I don't really buy this. Star Trek does pop philosophy, sure, but I struggle to think of many episodes of any of its series that really warrant the "deeper, more intellectual" badge. The aspiration to deeper stuff is a bit of pleasing veneer on fun escapism, occasionally clever plot lines, and (at its best) engaging character drama. I know we love to celebrate Star Trek's enlightened sensibilities, but I can think of TV series that go with regularity to more complex intellectual territory. I think we start to look silly if we put Star Trek on too high a pedestal.

Fun!Star Trek is good enough for me. I'm suspicious that "deeper, more intellectual" is better in any way than "well-staged, with interesting stories and characters." Tell me a good story and I'll appreciate the artistry that goes into it, the way it moves me, and so on. Plenty of sophistication in a well made thing, and frankly it's what Star Trek has more often succeeded at than any deep intellectual aspirations.

I am all in for pop philosophy, but sometimes the last few star trek is hardly that. As I said, Alex Kurtzman does have a thing for trying to make star trek more like mcu and his transformers written movies which are more dumb fun, dumb fun can be a low bar compared to pop philosophy,

Sometimes I still can get over for poorly written season 2 of discovery was. it would have been unwatachable if not for spock and pike. if SNW has that kind of writing, we will not even be getting pop philosophy. the saving grace of that would be if the cast is likeable to keep watching.

But how much depth is really there in Star Trek? Sometimes it hits very deeply but a lot of times it isn't deep but just very human relationships being expressed rather than some deep philosophy.

I'm thinking (hoping!) it will be good, and that will make me happier if it turns out to be excellent.

I'm hoping to be entertained, kind of a place to go once a week to escape a little from reality, visit some old and new friends, explore some new places and be told some good stories.

Give me some humor (even dashed in here and there in a dangerous situation) and maybe get me to think about something once in a while. Inspire me to do anything from something deep like look at the stars and wonder to something fun and goofy like want to make my own Command uniform tunic!

Make me feel like I was little, first finding Star Trek via my parents, experiencing wonder of the unknown and feel like anyone there can be accepted.

Give me these, even once in a while, and I'll be happy.

Sometimes Trek can be deeper, more intellectual and then Spock has to install his own brain or whatever that episode was about. Two giant monkeys with horns glued to their heads claw up Bill Shatner while he writhes in pain. Everybody gets turned into kids. Everybody gets drunk and horny. They all go on the holodeck and play baseball. Archer hangs out with Bin Laden. The cheese is going to blow up Voyager. Data's dreams are telling him the ship is going to explode. Riker has a clip show.
Star Trek is just a show in space where weird stuff happens. Some of it's great and some of it's bad and that's true of the whole dang thing.
