Watch The Exhilarating Opening Scene Of Star Trek: Discovery Season 3

I was hoping for some basic technological differences, and this small taste really lived up to my expectations. This bodes well for the portrayal of the future of Trek!

RAMA

I remember being a little kid and reading the entire plot of TSFS in a Starlog Poster Magazine weeks before my dad took me to the movie. I never again ruined it for myself!
I have no issues with this, I knew the basic plots of STFC and ST:INS, and the look of those films was different than what I had pictured, so for me knowing the story didn't matter, it was the execution I wanted to see.

Meh.

My wife wants no part of the show anymore, even though she likes Martin-Green. My son and I are going to give it an episode or two to see how things shake out.

A past interpretation of the future. Technology has moved past that, unless we're assuming Trek tech regressed.
Wow, we have warp drive, tricorders, phasers, universal translators, and subspace communication and transporters beyond TOS's abilities? :p

TOS' presentation of how computers function is limited. Same with communicators. It simply doesn't extrapolate from current technological understanding to the future. So, again, TOS, as presented, would assume a technological regression of some kind,

And BTTF2 had fax machines. That doesn't mean they didn't also have flying cars and hoverboards and flatscreens and skype and google glasses...

And? My company still uses fax machines.

Sorry, TOS is a 60s interpretation of technology. It works with a large suspension of disbelief for me. I love TOS for sure but acting like a 60s era interpretation of technology in 2020s doesn't strike me as working very well, save for a one off.

If Star Trek establishes itself as a separate world distinct from our humanity then maybe. But, it hasn't thus far. It's still about our humanity.

Modern Star Trek as an artificial 'pseudo period piece' really wouldn't be very cost-effective or commercially viable, fan claims to the contrary notwithstanding.

In every room? And they print out text messages, instead of you getting them on a phone? :p
My company doesn't send text messages. They use email.

The point is that technology is advancing faster than the 60s era interpretation would allow. So, no, we don't have transporters, but our computers and storage capacity, ability to send and receive information, has increased beyond what could originally be imagined.

Now, if they update the tech and keep a similar aesthetic then I think it might work...emphasis on might. But looking for it to look the same as TOS with the same style of tech is not viable, in my opinion.

Exactly - they don't send fax text messages on paper to every room in your house. That's the point.

What exactly is out of date in the existing shows? Where are "computers and storage capacity, ability to send and receive information" shown to be far below our current abilities?

They are not far beyond, save for ability to reach interstellar distances. Data storage appears to be limited in Trek to basically floppy disks. Data transmission feels very slow.

It might just be my perception. But, it feels treated differently.

I think you're point has been lost. Since I didn't say it was in every room of my house and simply that faxes were still in use.
