(For some reason they speak Finnish with a heavy Scandinavian accent. I don't know of any Finnish whalers, but anyway.)

I'm not 100% on it, but I THINK they were supposed to be Russian.

^^^Leonard Nimoy once said at a convention I attended that they were NOT Russian. He wouldn't say what country he imagined they were. I know that Norway had whaling interests at the time. I don't know if they still do.

I remember speculating with someone that maybe they were Kvens - Finnish-speaking Norwegians. (Finnish and the Scandinavian languages are in no way related, so there's no mistaking the language.)
