The Undiscovered Country Is My Favourite Movie!

I can't get enough of this film for some reason. It has the distinction of being the first Trek film I saw in theatres back in 1991 (when I was 12) went with two of my friends and saw it in the cheap theatre. Sat front row...it'd already been out for quite some time so there was only about maybe ten totally people in their with us. This was shortly after I'd discovered Star Trek and was blown away by it!! LOL

Now sixteen years later it holds a place of honor in my DVD collection of being my favourite Star Trek movie! I love everything there is about this film. From the premise of making peace with the Klingons, to it being the final adventure of the original series cast! General Chang is my favourite Trek movie villan with Khan a close second...the Klingon bastard's continous quoting of Shakespeare is awesome and I love McCoy's line in the Torpedo tube with Spock "I'd give real money if he'd Shut up!" There's a very quick moment where Spock looks up at McCoy with like "I agree with you" expression.

There is everything in this movie except romance...which is quite unneccessary considering the darkness (IMO) of this movie. Action, drama, comedy, brilliant fight sequences (love the battle between Chang's cloaked bird of prey and the Enterprise. How the Klingon Torpedoes literally start ripping the starship apart. Sulu's line "Then shake her apart!" is awesome showing how much of a bad ass Sulu has become!

The soundtrack is amongst my favourite soundtracks as well...a great score!!!

I was kinda disapointed by it. It was a bare bones political intrigue and I thought it was predictable.

Not quite the way I wanted peace with the Klingons.

I too rate this film as one of my faves (as people probably noticed there isn't a ST film I don't like) but this is one of my favourites definetely. Someone once asked me #how did the Klingons become allies with the Federation?' so I lent them TUC and they came back and said it was one of the best Sci-fi films they'd seen so thumbs up from someone who isn't even really a big ST fan.

It's in my Top Three, along with The Wrath of Khan & First Contact.

I wish I had gotten to it in theaters (I was old enough back then), but I didn't see it for the first time 'til it was released on VHS.

^ Yep that is pretty much how I would rank my top three as well:

1. Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country
2. Star Trek: First Contact
3. STar Trek II: The Wrath of Khan

Another moment I love is where the Enterprise crew beams down to Kitomer in order to prevent the assasination of the President and Kirk leaps and knocks down the President while saying "Kirk, Enterprise!" as if the President didn't already know him!!! Also dig Christian Slater's cameo role...lucky bastard!

TUC is easily my favorite of the Trek movies. I think it's got a great story, great acting, moves at an amazing pace, and the outcome has tremendous impact on future Trek.
There's only a fewer minor complaints that I've got but they really don't carry much weight.

Honestly, Wrath of Khan will always be my favorite, as it contains some of the most earnest, genuine & touching character interaction, & growth, in all of Star Trek, but I grew increasingly more despondent with the three following films. not that I dislike them, really, I just didn't think they were as good as TWOK

However, TUC, was a very good comeback, imo, & I found it very entertaining, though a tad shallow, but nevertheless, it was a solid, & respectful way for them to ride into the sunset

I saw them all in the theater :D

Kirk is actually hailing the Enterprise, not identifying himself to the President.

That would be pretty impressive, considerin' he didn't have a communicator handy. Did he think his voice would reach all the way into orbit?

Check out the screencaps -

- his right hand is empty, and his left is closed in on the President's arm when they land on the stage.

^ Yeah he's not communicating with Enterprise...why would he have to for? He's clearly identifying himself to the President.

I always assumed it was him introducing himself and explaining why he was tackling his Commander in Chief :)

The Undiscovered Country is the greatest Trek movie ever made.

Wrath of Khan and First Contact are the best killing and combat Trek movies.

The rest are simply big screen Trek TV shows.

Except for Nemesis which wrapped up and ended the Trek saga.

I, too, was disappointed. Too much cheesiness, although not nearly as bad as star Trek V. The gratuitous supermodel kissing Kirk for no reason was just embarassingly tongue-in-cheek. Valeris was not at all convincing as either a Vulcan or as someone who had Spock's respect. The "whodunit" aspect also simply did not work for me, and I though Spock showed way too much emotion when he finally confronted Valeris. McCoy's jokes during the final battle cheapened it by lessening tension that did not need to be lessened. It just didn't seem like they took it seriously.

Then there was the final scene, which was just painful to watch. No logic to Starfleet's communication. The forced sentimentality with them riding off into the sunset just didn't work for me.
Still, let's be honest, most of the Trek films haven't been all that good. It ranks fifth for me behind II, III, IV, and VIII.

Overall this one is in my top 5 for sure and it is definitely one of the more solid of the outings in my opinion. Not my favourite, but definitely not the worst of the bunch. It has enough moments in it that I really enjoy and it keeps me entertained.

I agree. Parts of it were really good, but it felt like it kept shooting itself in the foot with misplaced humor and cheesy dialogue. I like the concept of the ship that could fire while cloaked. I enjoyed seeing Sulu in command. I loved the final battle, minus McCoy. I even like how Spock set Kirk up to do this, knowing Kirk's animosity towards the Klingon's. Kirk supposedly private admission of his feelings towards them was brilliant and really rang true.
The dinner with Klingons was highly enjoyable, and I loved the "Earth. Hitler. 1938" quote, and Spock's look when Kirk said it.

One of the reasons TUC is my favorite movie of all time is that it is the first movie I remember seeing. It is just an excellent movie. I can't put into words how much I love this movie.

I rather liked the incident with Iman (Martia the Shapeshifter) in the movie. And what happened later...
Kirk: I can't believe I kissed you!
Shapeshifter as Kirk: Must've been your lifelong ambition!

I think of Denny Crane with that line!
