Game The Most Disliked Season Premiere, 2025 Edition

It's been two years since the last cycle, so time for another round of these themed cross-Trek Most Disliked Games!

THE OBJECTIVE: A sudden-death elimination game in which we remove our personal favorite episodes/movies from a themed list, until we arrive at the episode that is, if not the worst, at least the most disliked.

It's a framework to say positive things about episodes from across the franchise.

THE RULES: Below is a list of the season premieres for every Star Trek season thus far.

Eliminate/save your favorite, or the one you deem the ‘best' of what currently remains.
Post something you enjoy about the episode you are saving, and copy-and-paste the list with your choice removed.

You can use any standard you like to judge which option is "best." You can save episodes for being widely recognized “best Trek” classics, or for idiosyncratic qualities that no one appreciates but you.

As you get down the list, you might have to reach more and more for something to enjoy about an episode, and it's OK to eventually save episodes for being "less bad."

But -- no tactical voting! You cannot remove an episode because you don’t think anyone else will, or because you feel it would threaten your preferred episode's chance to “win.”

You can take multiple turns.

Leave at least 2 eliminations by other posters before you eliminate another episode.

New players are always welcome. You do not have to already be a "most disliked game" regular to dive in.

I'll take the first save with "Emissary." Oh my god do I love this pilot. I just recently rewatched it, and I cried several times. It's messages about moving on from grief guts me every time.

And it does such an excellent job of setting up it's world and characters.

I am going for "Amok Time". This is an important episode - it introduces the iconic Vulcan salute! Overall we get knowledge of Vulcan culture, a great fight scene, a very cunning solution to a problem and that great exchange between T'Pring and Spock. This isn't just a strong season opener, it's one of the best TOS episodes.

PIC's "The Next Generation" is a great premiere of the modern era. So cinematic! It was a thrill to see Beverly again and meet Jack. Picard season 3 is basically a perfect season of television, and this launches it so well. They really knew how to tell a large, cohesive story, while also keeping each episode a rewarding watch as it's own piece. (I guess I'd lightly ding it for Shaw, the season's one real flaw - this is a bit of a missed opportunity character for me, I don't respond to Stashwick in this role, though I know I'm the only one)

"Twovix" has proven to be one of the most rewatchable Lower Decks for me. I could not even venture a guess how many times I've seen this episode at this point.

Bizarrely, it also works about a billion times better as a Voyager finale than "Endgame" did. It was so nice to finally experience some emotional impact from Voyager's return home.

It's another Lower Decks premiere from me: "Grounded". It was fun and funny, moving (Mariner breaking down after Rutherford locks her out of the Cerritos' controls, then Rutherford, Boimler and Tendi comforting her), and went against expectations showing Starfleet in a good light when the system actually worked and Freeman was exonerated. Brilliant stuff.

Saving "BROKEN BOW".

Except for the Temporal Cold War (which is the ONE thing from the entire franchise I would erase), this was an excellent series premiere, right behind DS9 and VOY. It set up that series and world very, very well.

The interiors of the NX-01 ttuly look and feel like the step between now and TOS. The Starfleet uniforms are the best in the franchise. Bakula was perfect casting. And much more.

Since probably no one else will, I will save Descent Part II. The Descent episodes were actually among my favorite of TNG since I was a fan of Data. It was mostly Part I that I really liked, but obviously part II was necessary to finish up the storyline.

 

[Sakonna]

There are some real problems with it (the dialogue in that opening desert scene could not be worse, so much is wrong with the Klingons, etc), but "The Vulcan Hello" was still a near-religious experience for me. It was so exciting to have Trek back on TV! And I was confident they would work it all out eventually, which they did. Burnham and Saru are both exceptional characters and it's a great intro to them. And it is visually stunning.
