Game The Most Disliked Klingon Episode/Movie, 2025 Edition

THE OBJECTIVE: A sudden-death elimination game in which we remove our personal favorite episodes/movies from a themed list, until we arrive at the episode that is, if not the worst, at least the most disliked.

It's a framework to say positive things about episodes from across the franchise.

THE RULES: Below is a list of Klingon episodes & movies from TOS, TAS, TNG, DS9, VOY, ENT, DIS, LD, PRO, and SNW.

Eliminate/save your favorite, or the one you deem the ‘best' of what currently remains.
Post something you enjoy about the episode you are saving, and copy-and-paste the list with your choice removed.

You can use any standard you like to judge which option is "best." You can save episodes for being widely recognized “best Trek” classics, or for idiosyncratic qualities that no one appreciates but you.

As you get down the list, you might have to reach more and more for something to enjoy about an episode, and it's OK to eventually save episodes for being "less bad."

But -- no tactical voting! You cannot remove an episode because you don’t think anyone else will, or because you feel it would threaten your preferred episode's chance to “win.”

You can take multiple turns.

Leave at least 2 eliminations by other posters before you eliminate another episode.

I've been rewatching borderline Worf episodes all day and included a few that haven't been on previous times we've played this. Some of these episodes do deal more with his Klingon-ness than I thought originally. It's tricky to figure out where to draw the line with Klingons, they are so deeply woven into the fabric of the Trekverse.

Anyway, I'm going to let the recency bias of that viewing carry me and save "Change Of Heart." Wow what an impactful episode! I kind of forget this one, but what an emotional installment. Worf's speech about the power of the two Klingon hearts, goddman. It really is a tragedy the Jadzia/Worf relationship didn't get more time.

Saving Once More Unto the Breech

Not only is this a great send-off to the original, Klingon, it peels back some layers of the warrior culture that had been built up since TNG. The graphics are fresh. The ending scene is touching. And it has one of my favorite quotes: "IF they succeed, you can drink to their courage. And if they fail, you can still drink to their courage. "

TOS Season 2: “Friday’s Child”

The post-credits music is fantastic.

DC Fontana was not afraid to show multiple points of view and how characters react to it all in this.

The Klingon's machinations are very well written and acted, being a perfect foil for both Kirk and the Capellans.

The cat and mouse antics by the Klingons is actually quite refreshing in this episode as well.

The one thing I dislike about it is how the episode, solely for the audience's benefit, gives us the backdrop of the culture and forgets to have Kirk inform the security detail about it. The reason is pretty thoughtful, "He's a rookie!!" Kirk yells, but then he shouldn't have brought down a rookie? Then again, we'd otherwise have no episode. If made in the 90s, this plot nitpick likely wouldn't be there. More on this later.

Woomp, there it is! (I know, that's a 90s reference, so to make up for that, now imagine a bunch of Borg doing a line dance to that song!) It's otherwise a terrific plot setup (that clip, not the absolutely horrid notion of imaging Borg dancing), but there's no way around getting the story's tension going than to get the rookie killed off. It's a small enough nitpick, given how much DC explores and how well. Especially for 60s television where no home video existed, much less an electronic reminder in your pants pocket, and people tuning in two minutes late would still need a recap to be caught up. Definitely was a different time.

Saving STAR TREK INTO...

No, I can't even make that joke with a straight face.


Saving "THE WAY OF THE WARRIOR".

This was an EXCELLENT season premiere, one of the VERY best in the franchise. It breathed a new sense of confidence into DS9.

The story was superb, the tension was great, and everyone had wonderful scenes. And it was packed with excellent action!

This is a 10 out of 10, easily.

I recently saved its anniversary special sequel first, so it's only fair that this time I save the original The Trouble with Tribbles. One of the things I appreciate about the Original Series is how it remained committed to telling serious mature science fiction stories, but it could totally pull off comedy when it wanted to and this is possibly its best example of that.

"Undiscovered Country" is my absolute favorite of all the Trek films.

And I think the actual Star Trek to hook me originally. I always thought it was TNG's "The Game", but I recently recalled that the reason my parents suggested I watch TNG was because I couldn't shut up about how much I'd loved TUC when we saw it in theaters.

Saving "SOLDIERS OF THE EMPIRE".

There are others here I like a bit more (though this one ranks very highly for me), but if I were to pick a single episode that exemplifies Klingons and the title of this game, it's "SOLDIERS OF THE EMPIRE".

We get a great look at various Klingons and, more importantly, ones who feel beaten.

This episode also is a great story on how to help someone who has lost their confidence. Something like that can't be given... they have to find it in themselves. But you can do things to help them find it, like what Worf did for Martok.

Just an excellent episode all around... yet another win for Ronald D. Moore. And Martok!

And also, the ending... it is such a beautiful ending, Martok asking Worf to join his family as warrior and as a brother. As I have gotten older, I confess to shedding a single man tear or two when that scene comes up. I have only more thing to say about this one...

This stage of the game is both easy (so many good episodes still left) and hard (so many good episodes still left...)

I am going to save "Trials and Tribble-ations " both because the original episode was so good and for the "we do not discuss it with outsiders" which, to my mind, was the perfect way of dealing with change in the Klingons' appearance. Sometimes less is more and not everything needs an origin story or to be explained to the last hair.
 
Sticking with DS9, I'm saving season 5's By Inferno's Light. The second half of a fantastic two-parter. I don't remember it being a particularly Klingon-focused story but it gave Worf his due after all those times he got his ass kicked in TNG to show how tough an alien was.

DS9 definitely got a second wind with Worf, or another layer of a well-crafted cake that was DS9, while also allowing Sisko to still have some great material to work with during the course of their run:

Dax, whose Symbiont used to be in a Klingon host, is a perfect pairing with Worf to get the crux and intricacies of the plot moving forward. I found the clip, see below, but let's see TNG try that level of depth for adult science fiction. It couldn't. DS9 was quick to separate itself from TNG, so it could explore deeper ideas, as well as explaining how the 24th century utopia still managed to work (e.g. the duck analogy where it appears to be wading on water stationary, yet underneath it's paddling like the dickens. (Which isn't to say TNG was bad - far, far from it. Season 1 isn't a pile of doggie doodoo some people claim, just unpolished when not unfocused, but plenty of ideas were there, but I digress.)

The story's ending with the memory wipe is a bit hokey, but there's always a nitpick somewhere to be found - and it allows more than just the hokum as well. I can't really dislike it.

Maybe two: Some people whine on social media that the iconic bat'leths seem unwieldy. Maybe to a human, but Klingons also have far superior upper body strength. Plus, it's still choreographed television action stuff no matter how anyone tries to dance around it, not based on real life in our real world.

Maybe three. Trek really made the Klingons so compelling that there were news articles going back to even the 1990s where people got arrested for bringing their shiny pet bat'leths to places they shouldn't and giving the wrong impression as a result. Which now reminds me of yet another funky tangent:

"wej Duj" was an instant classic. Showing us a Klingon Boimler and a Vulcan Mariner was such an inspired idea. And I really would not have expected at the time for both characters to run as they did through the rest of the series.

ETA: I know that there are people who dislike that no resolution is shown be Dax and Sirella. I think that s missing the forest for the trees. The essentially conflict in the episode is between Dax and Worf. While they are negotiating their cultural differences, each one is taking a different journey that is based on what one culture expects of their individual sex. The compromise that needs to be decided upon is between the two marrying, which is what ends up happening.

In "Day of the Dove" we get a nice example of enemies working together to defeat a threat. Those Klingons might be sneaky and dishonorable but they aren't stupid.
